Sunday Obituary~Dr. Alva Brock



Capture-Alva Brock headlines
Charlotte, Oct.  28.-- Alva Brock, formerly a druggist of Columbia and a brother of Mrs. W. W. Coker1 of that city, died in a local hospital here early this morning after a short illness,  and funeral services will be conducted at the late residence here tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Burial will be in a local cemetery.
Mr. Brock, born in Cheraw April 24, 1889 was educated at the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of the state of South Carolina. He was engaged in the drug business in Columbia for several years before coming here to reside six years ago he leaves his wife, formally Miss Nancy Hutchison of Ninety-Six, S.C., and four children.2

After Dr. Alva passed away, Nancy and the children moved from Charlotte, NC to the Sanford area of Florida. They can be found there in the US Population Census for 1940.3

Alva Brock is my 2nd cousin twice removed.

  1. Charlie, would you say Dr Alva Brock came from an upper class family? I am wondering because he had the education and finances to attend college when many people at that time did not.

    Yes. His Father Peter Haley Brock was a very prosperous Merchant in the town of Cheraw. Unfortunately, his wife Mary Ellen Lyles died unexpectedly in June 1902 and I find no record that the youngest daughter was able to attend College. She was born in March 1893.Peter died in Apr 1919.
