Surname Saturday~Purvis-Freeman

 
Rosa Effie Freeman was born in 1848 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1 2 3 4 5 She was a daughter of Jesse Freeman (1804-July 1881) and Sarah Jane Davis (1804-after 1870). She died about 1884 at the age of 36 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.6 7 The only source of her death is a tombstone in the Purvis Cemetery with the year 1884 recorded. It's also the birth and death year of her last born child and namesake.

Rosa Effie Freeman married Corp. Stephen David Purvis about 1865; probably after his return from the Civil War.

Corp. Stephen David Purvis, son of John "Jack" Purvis and Sarah Huggins, was born on 20 Mar 1841 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.8 He appeared in the household of John "Jack" Purvis in the census in 1860 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.9 He served in the military Company A 4th South Carolina Cavalry CSA in 1861–1865.10 In 1870 and 1880, Stephen and Effie can be found in the Court House Township. 11 12 13

A tombstone for Effie shows that she died in 1884. In the 1900 Census Stephen and Clarence, his son, are together and in 1910, Stephen is living with his daughter Janie and  his son-in-law, Caldwell Baxter Gardner. 14 15 16

Stephen David died on 13 Mar 1914 at the age of 72 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.17 18 19 20 He is buried in the Purvis Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Stephen David Purvis and Rosa Effie Freeman had the following children:
i. William John Purvis, born 28 Aug 1866, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Lula Jane Bennett, 1888, Marlboro, South Carolina; died 9 May 1918, Cayce, Lexington, South Carolina.
ii. Josephine Purvis, born 24 Jan 1868, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Henry Turnage, 1883; died 7 Jan 1934, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina.
iii. Sidney James Purvis was born on 24 Apr 1870 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.21 22 He died in 1887 at the age of 17 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.23
iv. Alexander Milton "Sandy" Purvis, born 11 Feb 1873, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Hattie Louginia Gardner, about 1910, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 15 Jun 1930, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. Sarah Jane "Janie" Purvis, born 13 Aug 1875, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Caldwell Baxter Gardner, about 1899, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 7 Feb 1946, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vi. Lillie Ann Purvis, born 17 Mar 1878, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married William Jesse Ballard, about 1902, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 24 Oct 1932, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vii. Archie K. Purvis was born on 6 Apr 1881 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 16 Aug 1882  and was buried  in the Purvis Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.24
viii. Clarence D. Purvis, born 28 Sep 1881, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Margaret Elizabeth Purvis, about 1904, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 19 Mar 1955, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ix. Rose Effie Purvis was born in 1884 and died in 1884 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.25


Rosa Effie Freeman is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.
