Treasure Chest Thursday~Sidney Purvis Birth Certificate

Access to birth certificate in South Carolina is very restrictive so this document is a real treasure.

Sidney Purvis was born 17 October 1915, a son of Nicholas ‘Nick” Purvis, age 56, and Rachel Ann Boan, age 28. Sidney was Rachel’s fourth child but only 3 were living. That explains why I only show 2 previous births in my database for Nick and Rachel.

The birth certificate shows that baby Sidney was delivered by a Midwife named Jane Crowley. This was very common during this time period.

The birth certificate was filed by J. A. Davis on 25 October 1915 where it became certificate #34840, Certificate of Birth – Sidney Purvis.

Birth-Sidney Purvis

Nicholas Purvis and Rachel Ann Boan were married in late 1910 or early 1911. In 1910 Census, Nick and Rachel are unmarried at the time of census enumeration in April 1910. Nick is listed as a widow with children and Rachel is listed as single. Their first born child, Bennie Cleveland Purvis was born on 5 December 1911.

Nick and Rachel had 6 known children, 2 of which died as infants.
