John Pratt and his Children


The 1873 marriage licensee of John W. Deese to Harriett Sellers shows his father to be John Pratt. The death certificate of John W. Deese also shows his Father as John Pratt and his mother a Deese.

John W. Deese Marriage

John Pratt was born about 1812 and his son John W. Deese was born 15 July 1839. John Pratt’s parents are believed to be Samuel Pratt and Clarinda Teal. John W. Deese mother was a Mary ‘Polly’ Deese born 1808 died about April 1888.

John Pratt married Mary Ann Adams on 26 March 1844 in Anson County. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Adams and his wife Sarah. 

John Pratt and Mary Ann Adams had 6 known children before his death on 2 December 1859 in Morven, North Carolina.

PRATT, Dau., age 5, born NC; William A. Pratt, Son, age 3, born in NC; Emeline PRATT, Dau, age 2, born NC; Unnamed PRATT, Son, age 2/12, born NC.

John Pratt and Mary Ann Adams had the following children:

i. Martha Ann Pratt was born about 1845.

333. Near Morven, in this county, on the 13th of November, by W.T. WILLIAMS, Esq., Mr. Elijah N. LILES, to Miss Martha Ann PRATT, all of this county.

ii. William Andrews Pratt, born 22 Jan 1847, Cairo, Anson, North Carolina; married Mary Eliza Parsons, 29 Jan 1868, Anson County, North Carolina; died 10 Apr 1921, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.

iii. Emeline Sarah Pratt, born 12 Jul 1848; married Charles Henry Ratliff; died May 1880.
iv. John Washington Pratt, born 16 Jul 1853, Anson County, North Carolina; married May Atkinson Faulkner, 9 Nov 1875, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 17 Jun 1930, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.

v. Eliza Jane Pratt was born in 1854.

vi. James Leonidas Pratt, born Apr 1859; married Lena Valetta Little, 1884; died 5 May 1924, Raeford, Hoke, North Carolina.

In the 1880 Census, a Mary Dees, age 72, is listed in the Household of John Deese and Harriett Sellers. She is also listed as his Mother.

1880 CENSUS: Morven, Anson County, North Carolina; Roll: 951; Family History Film 1254951; Enumeration District: 2; Image: 0483; Page 345D; Line 29, Dwelling 137, Family 151; John DEESE, Male, age 41, born in NC; Harriett A. DEESE, Wife, age 26, born in NC; Derette DEESE, Daughter, age 5, born in NC; Mary E. DEESE, Daughter, age 4, born in NC; Nizza L. DEESE, Daughter, age 2, born in NC; Minne E. DEESE, Daughter, age 2, born in NC and Mary DEESE, Mother, age 72, born in NC.  This census and the recording below suggest that  Mary Dees, the Mother of John W. Deese, died about March 1888.

Anson County Commissioner Proceedings Volume A page 327 - April 2, 1888 - Ordered by the Board of Commissioners that the treasurer pay John Dees two dollars 25 cents without interest for coffin for his mother Mary Dees (Source: Steve Bailey).
