An early (1927) family history of the family claims that David ran away from home and went to live with his brother in North Carolina. Sarah Jane wife of Charles A. Brock had spent many years in my genealogy database without her maiden name.

https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2024/03/genealogy-serendipitymaiden-name-of.html

The impact of this document was much more significant than we imagined at the time of its discovery. Sarah Jane’s maiden name was revealed to be PROPHET. When we look further into her lineage we found the Sarah Jane was the daughter of Zack Prophet and his wife Mary and that she had 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

After posting my blog post I received the following comments from Bonnie Young. Thanks Bonnie!!

I have a theory...I believe Mary PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 2, born in NC listed above in your post is Mary K. Proboff Brock buried in Old Saint David's Episcopal Church Cemetery (1st wife of Irvin Samuel Brock) mother of Mary Kizzie Brock Bullard. It would make sense then that Mary Kizzie Brock is listed as a niece in the 1880 census with Charles A Brock and his wife Sarah (listed above as Sarah Prophet). Also Sarah Brock lived with Mary Kizzie in her later years. It's Sarah Prophet Brock's sister's daughter.

Her theory turned out to be correct. In the 1860 Census we can visually see the family composition.

1860 CENSUS: Cedar Hill, Anson, North Carolina; Page:#241B & 242A (Stamped), Line:#36-40 & 1-4, Dwelling:#231, Family:#311; Zach PROPHET Male, head, age 38, Farmer, born in NC; Mary PROPHET Female, Wife, age 39, born in NC; Sarah PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 16, born in NC; William PROPHET Male, Son, age 14, born in NC; John PROPHET Male, Son, age 12, born in NC; Charity PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 10, born in NC; Emma PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 8, born in NC; Richmond PROPHET Male, Son, age 5, born in NC and Mary PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 2, born in NC.

One of those sister, Mary, had married a BROCK named Ervin Samuel Brock. Ervin Samuel Brock and Mary K. Prophet were married about 1875. Their only child, Mary Kizzie Brock, was born August 1876. It cost Mary K. Prophet Brock her life. Mary K. Brock died 18 August 1876, which most likely is the day or day after Mary Kizzie was born.

For years, Mary K, Brock tombstone in the churchyard of St. David’s Episcopal Church had been miss transcribed as PROBOFF resulting in a dead end when trying to research her heritage. Today it has been updated and corrected on her FindAGrave memorial. Thank to a dedicated FindAGrave Volunteer.

Sarah Jane Prophet Brock, wife of Charles A. Brock, and Mary K. Prophet Brock, wife of Ervin Samuel Brock, are sisters.

Charles A. Brock, and Ervin Samuel Brock are 1st Cousins.

In documents online Sarah J. Prophet referred to Mary Kizzie Brock as her niece. Mary first shows up in the 1880 Census as the 3 year old niece of Charles A. and Sarah J. Brock. She is listed as M. K. Brock.

Mary’s tombstone shows her to be the “Wife of Irvin Brock. If you use this book be aware that it does contain errors; so use but verify.

During the past several weeks I have been researching my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed, Eleazer David. Eleazer David was borne abt 1764, a son of Hugh Eleazer David and Catherine Evans.

Harry A. Davis in his book say that Hugh Eleazer and Catherine had two children, a daughter, unnamed, who died young and a son, Eleazer David born abt 1764.

He further stated that this Eleazer David was twice married; first to Ann Liston abt 1786. Ann (Liston) David died about 1797 and he married second (2) Mary, daughter of Robert Johnson. This does not match some of the documents I found. Adding to this confusion is online trees naming Isabella Keith as the 1st Wife of Eleazer David.

The only wife that I have proven, at this point, is Mary Johnson (2nd Wife) Daughter of Robert Johnson. But, I DO NOT have a marriage date for Eleazer and Mary. I do know that the last two children borne, daughter Mary and son Benjamin David, are children from this marriage.

Two names are often associated or said to be the 1st wife of Eleazer David. Those two names are Isabella Keith and Ann Liston. Harry A. Davis in the "Davis Book" names Ann Liston while online trees today says that his 1st wife was Isabella Keith. No sources were provided to prove that either lady, if they exist, were married to Eleazer David. Several land deeds do exist to show that there were indeed a close assoiciation between Eleazer David and two Liston's families; Edmund Liston and Abraham Liston and his wife Elizabeth. We also know that Abraham and Elizabeth had 8 children.

EUREKA: Eleazer David 1st Wife was proved while researching for this blog post. Proven 1st Wife of Eleazer David is Isabella Keith, widow of John Keith. The widow, Isabella Keith and Eleazer David was married in February 1779 by a minister.

No record of an Ann Liston marriage to Eleazer David has been found.

Further, this is proven by the probate file.

In NewCastle County Md Deed Book W1:401 [dated 23 August 1834] we find the following:

(pg 401) Whereas Eleazer David late of the Hundred, County and State aforesaid was in his life time, and at the time of his death, seized in his demeanor as of fees of and in sundry tracts parcels and pieces of land, marshes and swamps in the Hundred aforesaid, and being so seized died, having first made his last will and testament in writing and left to survive him a widow Mary and five children. Probate records show that he administers the estate under a bond dated 4 March 1802.

While searching for evidence of Thomas David death in the Cecil County, Maryland probate files I also found this Administration Bond.

This Administration Bond is for the Death of Davidson David which occurred before 16 November 1804. Sarah Haughey’s husband William, had already passed away when she wrote her Will on 4 May 1787 in Pencader Hundred, in the County of New Castle and State of Delaware.

Her estate was equally divided between her son, William and her three daughters, Eleanor Calvert Pricillah Cowin & Ann Haughey.

She also left legacies to her Son-in-law, Evan David, Jr., husand of her daughter Mary, his wife and 3 of their 6 known children. While some states did documents births, death and marriage pre-1910; most states did not began this type of documentation until laws were passed around 1910 making it a requirement. You might find a “Death Notice” in the local newspapers but the modern day obituary as we are acquainted with today were very rare. If a death was documented it would most likely be within a church.

Today, I have chosen the Baptism Record of my 4th Great Grandfather, Johan Martin Derr [Anglicized to DRY] to share with my readers.

Johan Martin Derr was born 10 July 1759, a son on J. Charles Derr and Christina Muss. His baptism is documented in A History of the Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (1727-1819).

His parents and family members were active in this church. The Baptismal Records, 1748-1761 of Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge, were compiled by the REV. GEORGE MICHAEL WEISS.

Baptism entry for Johan Martin Derr is in the left column about midway down page 294.

The baptism was recorded as a baptism facts in my genealogical database.

BAPTISM:

Parents: J. He was the 6th of eight children born to John Davis and Annie Boatwright.

George Boatwright’s life was tragically ended by a “so-called” friend on Christmas Eve 1929 when he stabbed in the left side of his neck and bled to death.

Obituary:

George BOATWRIGHT - Frank Teal is in the county jail charged with murder of his friend Geo. Boatright, Christmas Eve night near Westfield Creek church. It seems that Frank Teal, Geo. Boatright, Ben Brock and Robert Teal, brother to Frank were returning from a Christmas tree at Westfield Creek church about 8 o'clock Dec. 24th Teal and Boatright were walking together, the other boys a little distance away. At the coroner's inquest all the boys testified that there had been no quarreling or hard feelings when they heard Boatright say, "You ought not to make me bleed like that." When they reached the spot they found Boatright on the ground bleeding badly. Teal was arrested a short while later at the home of relatives in the neighborhood. Officers state that he was clearly under the influence of liquor when arrested. He is said to deny any knowledge of the affair and claims he and Boatright were the best of friends. The coroner's physician found that death had been produced by a knife thrust in the neck severing an artery from which death came very quickly. [The Chesterfield Advertiser, January 2, 1930, page 1, col. 4].
