The 1900 Census states that William John "Buck" Odom and Nancy A. Wadsworth were married about 1882. Nancy A. Wadsworth, daughter of Lewis H. Wadsworth and Mary Ann Freeman, was born on 5 Aug 1859 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. William was a lifetime farmer in the County.

William John Odom and Nancy A. Wadsworth had the following children:

i. John Dwight Odom, born 8 Sep 1886, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States; married Elizabeth Jane Vick; died 25 Nov 1920, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Gary Wadsworth Odom, born 28 Aug 1888, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 27 Mar 1943, Newton, Catawba Co., NC.
iii. Paul Odom was born on 19 Apr 1892 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 29 Nov 1958 at the age of 66 in Lake City, Columbia, Florida.
iv. Bryon A. Odom, born 19 Sep 1894, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Nell Burch; died 21 Dec 1957, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. Craig M. Odom, born 31 May 1897, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Stella Lee Sowell; died 4 Feb 1951, New York, New York.
vi. Infant Odom was born on 19 Feb 1899 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 19 Feb 1899 at the age of 0 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

William John "Buck" Odom passed away on 3 July 1922 at the age of 60 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 

Nancy A. Wadsworth Odom passed away on 8 Jan 1937 at the age of 77 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Both William John and Nancy Wadsworth Odom are buried in the Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.


William John Odom and Nancy A. Wadsworth Odom are my second cousins and I need to do more work on their families and lines.

Stanly County NC Estate~Marcus ‘Mark’ Huneycutt

After years of research all that is known about the death of my 3rd Great Grandfather is that he died sometime between 1860 and 1870.  No record of his death or a tombstone has been found.

No Last Testament and Will has been found but there was a probate of his estate.

I’m know this estate was created for the sole purpose to protect the heirs at law in the division of the real estate and personal property of one Mark I. Huneycutt.

The last record we have for Mark Huneycutt is his presence in the 1860 Census for Stanly County.

His wife Charity Dry is listed (without husband) in the 1870 Stanly County Census.

HUNEYCUTT, Female [Daughter], age 22, born in NC and Tobitha [Tabitha] HUNEYCUTT GrandDaughter], Female, age 15, born in NC.

This seems to indicate that Mark passed away between 1860 and 1870. But, why did the heirs wait until 1902 to settled his estate.

There are 24 images or pages to his estate on Family Search. I think the estate is incomplete. The earliest document is Image 13 and 14; both related to appointing a Guardian for my Grandmother and her two sisters.

The three sisters, Pearl, Etta and Theresa are grandchildren of Mark through his daughter Louvena Huneycutt Deese. It was amazing to see my grandmother named within this probate file.

 

The next document I want to discuss is a documents listing the children of Mark and Charity Dry. That document is image 19.

The first things I want you to notice is that every child except Martin I. Huneycutt (#1) is listed as deceased (dead)

It’s Family Time~Owen Ulrich Dry

Owen Ulrich Dry was born on 4 Dec 1754 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, British America. He was baptized on 4 Dec 1757 and confirmed on 9 Apr 1773 at Confirmed Good Friday, 1773.

He was twice married. All his children are by his first wife Eve.

Owen Ulrich Dry and Eve were married about 1776. Eve was born on 1 Feb 1757 in North Carolina, British America. She died on 17 Nov 1828 at the age of 71 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Some say she was a “DRY” but I have found no proof of her surname. Her tombstone can be found in Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Owen Ulrich Dry and Eve had the following children:

i. Christina Dry, born 1777, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Peter Kauble; died 1829, Rowan County, North Carolina.
ii. Catherine "Katy" Dry, born 28 Feb 1783, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married George Jacob Miller Jr., 25 Mar 1807, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; died 6 Apr 1858, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina.
iii. Daniel Dry, born 21 Jul 1795, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Barbara Lipe, 1 Mar 1815, Montgomery County, North Carolina; died 9 Mar 1836, Perry County, Illinois.
iv. John F. Dry, born 1780, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Elizabeth Meisenheimer, abt 1805; died 25 Aug 1842, Perry County, Illinois.

After the death of his wife Eve in November 1828; Owen next married Miss Catherine Polk. 

Owen Ulrich Dry and Catherine Polk were married on 9 Dec 1834 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.  Catherine Polk was born about 1764. She died after 1834; evidence of her death has not been found. 

His marriage was recorded in “The Weekly Raleigh Register” 26 Dec. 1834.

In Cabarrus county, 9th inst., by John Fuggart, Esq., Mr. Owen Dry, age 80, to Miss Catherine Polk, age 70 --"all for the Administratied. on "---Communicat

Owen signed his will on 21 Feb 1839 in Cabarrus County. His estate was probated in 1840 at Cabarrus County Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 3 page 78. in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
He died on 5 Mar 1840 at the age of 85 in Concord, Cabarrus, North Carolina. His tombstone can be found in Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Owen Ulrich Dry is my 4th Great Grand Uncle.

Union County} Know all men by these presents that we John O. Tucker and Mary Ann Tucker his wife of the County of Stanly and state aforesaid have made, nominated, and appointed and by these presents do make nominate and appoint Michael Dry, our true and lawful agent and attorney in fact for us and in our names, to ask demand, sue for and recover and receive of and from Thos. D. Winchester the clerk and master in equity for the county of Union aforesaid, or other person or persons having and holding the same all sum and sums on account of and arising from the sale or sales heretofore had by said clerk and Master of the lands of the heirs at law – of Charles Dry dec’d by virtue of and pursuant to a decree of the court of equity for said county of union or in any other manner or in any other account whatsoever. To have use and take all necessary ways and means in our names or otherwise for the recovery thereof either by suing out and prosecuting all manner of legal; and [illegible] process or compounding and arbitrating therefor recovering to his best discretion, and all necessary receipts, releases, remittances and other sufficient discharge therefore in our means to make seal and deliver and to do and perform all acts and things in and about the premises as fully and effectively in all respects as we might or could do under any circumstances.

Tucker and Mary Ann Tucker his wife appeared in open court and personally acknowledged the due execution by them of a power of attorney to Michael Dry dated the 7^th day of October 1861and [illegible] Thomas C. Wilson a member of the Court is appointed to take participate examination of the said Mary Ann Tucker. And the said Thomas C. Wilson after having privately examined the said Mary Ann Tucker separate band apart from her said husband touching her free consent in the execution of said power of attorney reports to the Court that she acknowledged before him when so examined that she had executed the said power of attorney freely of her own accord and will and without any force, fear or undue influence of her of her said husband or any other person and doth still voluntarily assent thereto.

This land deed is very puzzling. Clearly it states in the beginning that: 

• lands of the heirs at law – of Charles Dry dec’d 
• This statement coveys three messages to this researcher
• Charles Dry is deceased
• His heirs are petitioning the Court to divide the land 
• The within named individuals are heirs-at-law of the estate of Charles [Andrew] Dry.

Also named within the land deed is Michael Dry, Attorney, son of Charles Andrew Dry and Esther Misenheimer.

Research shows that Charles Andrew Dry was twice married; first, to Esther Misenheimer (1819) and upon her death to Leah Tucker, abt 1834.

Most of the children named in this deed are from a union between a male “Tucker”  and a female “May”. These children are most likely nieces and nephews of Leah Tucker Dry. Time to get to work and solve this puzzle.

Who Are The Parents of Timmie Smith?

Finding a glaring error in your genealogical database is never a pleasant experience. Earlier this week I received the following E-mail from a friend and fellow genealogist.
“Look at Find A Grave memorial 97670571 Timanda Smith and Find A Grave memorial 60843664 Timmie Smith Brock and give me your opinion about these. You might notice that both include a copy of death certificates. Also note that on Timmie Smith Brock it lists father as Isom Smith. Thank you.”
After a day trip that I had to take, I returned home to dig into these two memorials to see what  had triggered the e-mail from my friend.

Find A Grave memorial 97670571 - Timanda Smith
The accompanying death certificate on this memorial shows that Timanda Smith was the daughter of Isaac Smith and Jane Boatwright.  

The 1860 and 1880 Census for Anson County also shows that Timanda is in the household of Isaac Smith and his wife Jane.

With her presence in the Isaac and Jane Smith household and her death certificate there seems to be little doubt that Tamanda Smith is the daughter of Isaac and Jane Smith.

Find A Grave memorial 60843664 - Timmie Smith Brock

I went into this one thinking this will be easy. I’m very familiar with Timmie Smith Brock and Michael, her husband, because they are my great Aunt and Uncle.

Right away I ran into problems. The first reference of Timmie Smith is in the 1880 Census where she is enumerated as Timmie Brock, wife of Michael Brock.

Now add to that information the fact that she is listed as being age 17.  That leaves one Census (1870) that Timmie may have appeared in before her marriage. This is real problematic.

The 1870 Census in South
Back in the 1870, the Southern people had lost the war and there were many bureaucrats trying to tell them what to do. So the people develop an attitude to minimize the bureaucrats impact whenever possible. When the Census takers appears in the South in 1870 the attitude was we’ll give them our first name initials, middle initial in some cases and last name.  Thus you have an 1870 Census that looks like this:

We know  that Timmie is going to appears in only one Census and that census is the 1870 Census containing limited data with only initials listed for the first and middle names. A search of the census revealed only one possible family containing a female that might be Timmie Smith. That family is the family of William B. Smith and his wife Abigail Elizabeth Crawley.

Could T. E. Smith be Timmie Smith wife of Michael Brock?

One thing I do know, Timmie death certificate shows her parents to be Isom Smith and Jane Boatwright.  Isom seems to be a shorten version of Isaac Smith or a nickname. The informant on this death Certificate is listed as Alexander Knight, a non-family member. I am of the opinion that this is mis-information.

For now, the parents of Timmie Smith, wife of Michael Hezekiah Brock, are unknown.

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) has approved my 5th Great Grandfather, Charles Dry, as a patriot of the American Revolution.  I am very pleased to finally have these documents approved.
