Williams Eddins Deed of Gift to his Children

William B. Eddins and his wife Nancy are my 4th Great Grandparents. Nancy died about 1816 and William B. died in 1822. After the death of Nancy, William B. at age 60+ thought he was too young to live along and married a young lady by the name of Mary [LNU]. After his death this created a huge lawsuit of which Mary became one of the victors. If you haven’t read this lawsuit you really should. It names all 9 of his children and in some cases their spouses. If you don’t think its necessary just look at the “TREES” on Ancestry for William B. Eddins. But please don’t copy the fictitious information located there; look at this lawsuit.

After the death of William B. Eddins in 1822, his oldest son Williams who had married Elizabeth Ingram in 1808 moved his family to Butler County, Alabama. Brothers Richard and William Riley also left Chesterfield and moved to Alabama.

In October 1832, Williams executed the enclosed deed transferring some of his personal property to his children.

In this Deed of Gift to his children, Williams Eddins named William R, Calvin T, Matilda, Mahala Elizabeth, and Lysian (phonetic spelling for Eliza Ann). Body of Deed of Gift says "William Eddins", but the Clerk notes the name "Williams Eddins" in the certification and "Williams Eddins" in the signature on page 84. In this Deed, Williams names 5 of his 7 children. The two children not mentioned were Catherine and Wilson, his two oldest.

Recorded 5th Oct 1832            John D. Curtis C. {seal}

Why Williams executed this Deed at this time is unknown; but, I do know the youngest daughters were all under the age of twenty-one. It could be related the the death of Williams first wife Elizabeth Ingram in 1828 and his fourth-coming re-marriage.

Williams Eddins is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35283592/joseph-c-sellers

Obituary:

JOE SELLERS - News reached us here last Wednesday that JOE SELLERS of the 24th district had died the night before. Mr. Sellers is quite an old man and has been sick for some time with typhoid fever. He is one of seven brothers who constituted rather a remarkable family. The youngest of these brothers is over 60 years old and this is first brother to die. They have lived to ripe old age and only a short time ago, the seven had their pictures taken in a group, which formed an interesting group. Mr. Sellers stood well in his community and his death is regretted by a host of friends and relatives. His remains were laid to rest in the Sellers graveyard last Wednesday.
Carroll County Democrat Huntingdon, Tennessee Friday, August 22, 1890

Joseph C. Sellers was a son of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood and the grandson of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook.

It’s Family Time~The Abington B. Parsons Family

Before we discuss the Abington B. Parsons family I would like to cover some background information on his parents.

Abington Parsons, the elder, was born about 1784 and died 13 April 1826. His widow, Mary, and 6 children survived. All are named within this Chesterfield County, SC Equity suit.

Equity Suit:

#6-Ratliff, William H. vs. Mary Parsons Adm. et al - Bill for account & c 1843
Abington Parsons departed this life on or about 13th day of April 1826. Heirs: Widow, Mary Parsons; children: Ann Parsons, born June 27th  1818, intermarried with Richmond White; Timney Parsons, born September 2, 1819, intermarried with Noah Sellers; Raymond Parsons, born December 5, 1820; Elizabeth Parsons, born March 9, 1822 intermarried with William Sellers; Thomas Parsons, born May 10, 1823; Mary M. Parsons, born April 10, 1825. [#6 Index and Genealogical Abstracts of the Chesterfield District Court of Common Pleas, Equity Side, 1823-1869, page 115 as recorded in "Cheraw/Chesterfield District Wills, 1750-1865 & Abstracts from the Court of Common Pleas 1823-1869, Published  by James C. Pigg, Copyright 1995.]

Many on-line trees show his widow Mary living into the 1860 but I believed that Mary passed away about January 1845 based on this SHERIFF'S SALES notice in the Cheraw Gazette, 28 January 1845.

1 Negro Woman named Fanny and child Sam, 1 Yoke of Oxen, 5 Head of Cattle, 10 Head of Hogs, 1 Clock, 1 Shot Gun, articles of Household and Kitchen Furniture, Farming Utensils, 1 Cart, &c.; levied on as the property of Mary Parsons at the suit of W. H. Ratliff and others vs. Mary Parsons.
* All except the Negroes will be sold on the second day of sale at Mary Parsons' house. [Cheraw Gazette, Cheraw, South Carolina, 28 Jan 1845, Tue., Page 3, column 5].

Abington and Mary had 2 sons and 4 daughters. After their death most of the daughters stayed in Chesterfield County; but, the 2 sons, Raymond and Thomas, along with William Eddins Sellers and his wife Elizabeth Parsons and Noah Sellers and wife Timney Parsons migrated to Tennessee. Raymond is listed in the 1850 Carroll County, TN; Thomas is listed in the 1850 Madison County, TN. Noah Sellers and Timney Parsons are in 1850 Carroll Conty, TN and William Eddins Sellers and wife Elizabeth Parsons are listed in the 1850 Madison County, TN Censuses. Family folklore says William Eddins Sellers died there in 1854 after falling from the rafters of a new church he was helping to build and Great-Great Grandma Elizabeth (Parsons) Sellers packed up the children and returned to Chesterfield County, SC where she can be found in the 1860 Censuses as a 36 year old widow.

Raymond Parson, 1850 Census, Carroll County, TN

Raymond Parson and his family has not been found in the 1860 Censuses; but, in 1870 we find his wife and children in the household of his eldest son, Abington B. Parsons in Texas.

In this 1870 Census we have:

Ann PARSONS, age 40, Mother, born in SC (Listed as Alice in 1850 Census)

Arrington [Abington] PARSONS, Son, age 24

Joseph CANTRELL [Actual CANTWELL], Son-in-Law, age 19

Mary Jane CANTWELL, Daughter, age 18

Henry TAYLOR, Son-in-Law, age 25

Juliana TAYLOR, Daughter, age 17

Floyd PARSONS, Son, age 10, born in AR [This son was not in the 1850 Census; but, there was a son Thomas L. listed in that TN Census.]

It is not known what happen to Raymond Parsons after the 1850 Census. His widow Ann/Alice died after 1870 in McLennan County, Texas. No record of Thomas L. had been found. None of the family have been located in the 1860 Census for any states to my knowledge.

Abington B. Parsons was born on 11 Feb 1846 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Abington B. Parsons and Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell were married about 1870 in McLennan County, Texas. Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell, daughter of James Cantwell and Sarah Anna Johnson, was born on 29 Jan 1857 in Madison County, Arkansas.

Abington B. Parsons and Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell had the following children:

i. William Albert Parsons, born 11 Jan 1874; married Maggie Lee Buchanan; died 15 May 1963.

ii. James R. Parsons, born 17 Jul 1876; married Bessie Anna Cantwell; died 6 Apr 1960.

iii. Robert Dean Parsons, born 1 Jul 1881, Milford, Ellis, Texas; married Tascher Carr, 27 Mar 1902; died 9 Dec 1945, Arizona.

iv. Lillie Bailey Parsons, born 28 Nov 1883, Ft Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas; married James B. Jones, 27 May 1900, Ellis County, Texas; died 16 Aug 1979.

v. Eva Myrtle Parsons was born on 8 Apr 1886 in Texas. She died on 17 Sep 1888 at the age of 2 in Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas

vi. Bertie Ann Parsons, born 19 Jan 1889; married Joseph Fletcher Knouse, 18 Dec 1905, Pierce, Nebraska; died 11 Jan 1982.

vii. Oaksey Abington Parsons, born 20 Nov 1891, Texas; married Ida C.; died 7 Apr 1962, Oklahoma.

viii. Aerie E. "Amos" Parsons, born 2 Apr 1894; married Geneva Mae; died 21 Jan 1974.

Gaps in the Thompson Powell Lineage

Thompson B. Powell and Mary “Polly” Boatwright were the parents of 4 children. Thompson B., born abt 1802 married Mary Boatwright about 1834. Their children's were:

  1. Mary E. Powell, b. 3 Dec 1835; Married William Monroe Hurst about 1854; died 9 May 1917.
  2. Richard Thompson Powell, b. abt 1841; after 1880, date unknown.
  3. Ann Rebecca Powell, b. 8 Jan 1847; married Ferguson Hale Smith, abt 1871; died 24 Feb. 1902.
  4. Ellen E. Powell, b. 11 Oct 1851, died 9 Dec. 1940

Thompson B. Powell Estate was probate in 1866; he died sometime before 11 June 1866. It is not known when his wife Mary Boatwright died but the last Census she appeared in was the 1860 Chesterfield Census.

In the 1870 Census for Chesterfield County we find only two of the children – Richard Thompson Powell and Mary E. (Powell) Hurst. Richard Thompson is listed as T. R. Powell. In his household is a 23 year female with the initials M. E. Powell perhaps suggesting that he has taken a bride. Yet no other listing for Richard has been found until recently and no other listing for M. E. Powell b. 1857 has ever been found.

1870 CENSUS: Court House, Chesterfield County, South Carolina;  Roll M593_1491; Image: 111;  Family History Library Film: 552990, Page 293A; Line 27, Dwelling 113, Family 113; T. R. POWELL, Male, age 29, born in SC and M. E. POWELL, Female, age 23, born in SC.

Yesterday, I received from another Powell researcher (M. P.) a 1880 Census sheet for Alachua County, Florida. Shown on the Census page is a Richard Powell, age 40 with his Sister Ellen E. Powell, age 20. I believe these two individuals to be the son and daughter of Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright. Both are shown to have been born in South Carolina.

No record of Richard Thompson Powell death has been found. It is believed he died in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. His tombstone was discovered in 1974 during the reconstruction and expansion of Highway #9. His grave was marked with a Military tombstone but no death date was recorded.  Find A Grave Memorial#55555209. Three graves were relocated from the roadway path to Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery on Zoar Road when the highway was widen to 4 lanes.

If you have any information on the Death of Mary “Polly” Boatwright Powell or her son Richard Thompson Powell I would love to hear from you.

It’s Family Time~Shared DNA with Charlton Ashley Purvis

One of my matches on Ancestry.com is a young lady who is a descendant of Charlton Ashley Purvis.

We share 14 cM across 1 segments and she is estimated to be my 4th cousin.

I have never heard of Charlton Ashley Purvis in my 40 plus years of research. So I did a little research.

Charlton Ashley Purvis was borne 25 November 1906 in Georgia, a son of Raleigh Stanley Purvis and  His wife Lucretia Kizzie Clark. He is one of eleven children borne to Raleigh and Lucretia Purvis. His siblings consists of six brothers and four sisters.

Charlton Ashley Purvis married Reba Ophelia Manus of Georgia abt 1926. They were the parents of eight children; 3 sons and 5 daughters.

At this point in two generations we have 19 children and four adults' and still no indication of a familial connection between my Purvis lineage and the lineage of Charlton Ashley Purvis.

Taking the family back another generation we find that the parents of Raleigh Stanley Purvis are William H. Purvis, born 1 March 1832 in Georgia. William H. Purvis was married three times. His first wife was a lady by the name of Elizabeth Cochran. He married Elizabeth Cochran on 26 August 1847 in Laurens County, Georgia. To this union were borne 8 known children; several of whom died as infants or young children.

After the death of Elizabeth, William next married Emily Young on 31 July 1871 in Laurens County, Georgia. To this union were borne 2 known children; both boys, one of which was Raleigh Stanley Purvis, borne 5 September 1875.

Emily must have died from childbirth. On 15 January 1878, William H. Purvis married for a 3rd time to a young lady by the name of Ann Hutto. Their infant daughter was age 10/12 in the 1880 Census. No other record of the infant has been found.

1880 CENSUS: Pinetuckey, Laurens, Georgia; Enumeration District:#64; Page 543(Stamped), Line 38, Dwelling 53, Family 54; William PURVIS, Male, age 60, born in GA; Gilsy A. PURVIS, Wife, age 33, born in GA; Manen PURVIS, Son, age 12, born in GA; Harlow PURVIS, Son, age 10, born in GA; Raleigh PURVIS, Son, age 8, born in GA; Reed PURVIS, Son, age 4, born in GA and Infant PURVIS, Daughter, age 6/12, born Dec 1879 in GA.

After adding this generation I still have not found a connection to my Purvis lineage. On-line trees show that William H. Purvis is the son of Richard Purvis (1764-1850) and his wife Sarah "Sallie" Burch (1791-1843).

I am not aware of any Richard Purvis in our lineage or any connection to the Purvis families in Georgia. But, I will continue to look for connections between my lineage and other Purvis’ throughout the United States. For now we will put Charltom Ashley Purvis on the back burner and move on to more productive research.
