It’s Family Time~The Jacob Moulder Family

Jacob Moulder was born 21 January 1806 in Grainger County, Tennessee. This birth date is from two FindAGrave memorial and had not been proven by a valid, legal document.

He married Susanna Capley on 17 December 1829 in Tennessee. Susanna Capley was born 3 August 1801 in Rowan County, North Carolina, a daughter of  Peter Capley, Jr. and Maria Barbara Grappin. In the 1850 Census, there were six children in the household. There is also their oldest daughter Martha married to Daniel Dry and living nearby. 

Jacob, at age 55, served in the Union Army until he was medically discharged on 28 July 1863 by a Surgeon's certificate of disability and final statements given 31 July 1863 at Nashville, Tenn. [https://www.fold3.com/image/268107254].

He returned home safely only to be murdered by the Confederate Army in October 1863. 

Jacob Moulder and Susanna Capley had the following children:

i. Martha Ann Moulder, born abt 1831, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Daniel Dry, Tenneessee..

ii. Jasper Washington Moulder was born on 6 Nov 1832 in Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee. He died on 11 Feb 1920 at the age of 87 in Halls Mill, Bedford, Tennessee.

iii. Sarah Elizabeth Moulder was born on 30 Dec 1834 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She died on 17 Feb 1936 at the age of 101 in Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee.

iv. William P. Moulder, born abt 1838, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Mary A. V. Statum, 31 Oct 1877, Bedford County, Tennessee.

v. Mary Jane Moulder, born abt 1840, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Elijah Williams; died 8 Feb 1922, Thayer, Oregon, Missouri.

vi. Christiana A. Moulder was born about 1842 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

vii. Samuel Kimbrough Moulder, born 25 Sep 1845, Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee; married Roseanna Pickle; died 26 Dec 1936, Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee.

Susannah (Capley) Moulder died in 1888. There is a specific death date for her floating around the various online trees but again there is no proof document for this date.

The Murder of Jacob Moulder

Jacob Moulder was born 21 January 1806 in Grainger County, Tennessee.

He married Susanna Capley on 17 December 1829 in Tennessee. Susanna Capley was born 3 August 1801 in Rowan County, North Carolina, a daughter of  Peter Capley, Jr. and Maria Barbara Grappin. In the 1850 Census, there were six children in the household, plus their oldest daughter married Daniel Dry and was living nearby. 

Then in April 1861 this family and many others suffered the tragedy of the Civil War. At age 55, Jacob enlisted on 15 June 1862 with Company "E", 10 Tennessee Infantry at age 17, his youngest son, Samuel K. enlisted also with Company “E” on 26 December 1862. The 10th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Both returned from the War.

Jacob was mustered out and discharged on 28 July 1863 by Surgeon's certificate of disability and final statements given 31 July 1863 at Nashville, Tenn. [https://www.fold3.com/image/268107254]. He returned home to his family and was murdered about 9 weeks after returning home. 

Transcription:

Wheeler's soldiers on their last expedition into Bedford county, took Jacob Moulder, a discharged Federal Soldier, aged sixty-five, and one of the most upright and inoffensive citizens of that county, dragged him out of his bed and hung him to a tree. The murderers then went to the residence of a German, a man of excellent character, tore him from the arms of his wife, dragged him into a thicket and, shot him through the head. They also hung a third Union man, in the same county, and doubtless practiced similar outrages wherever they marched.

There are many on line trees that say Jacob Moulder died in December 1863. But, there are several documents that clearly shows Jacob Moulder was hung and died on or about 7 October 1863.There “The Nashville Daily Union”, Military Tombstone Application. The Tombstone application show death occurring on 6 October 1863.   

Susannah (Capley) Moulder lived another 25 years after this senseless wartime retribution that took the life of her husband. She died as best as I can determine in 1888. Some say she died 6 July 1888 but I was unable to confirm this date. 

Susannah (Capley) Moulder is my 1st Cousin 5X Removed.

Its: Family Time~The William Thomas Graves Family

This blog post is a repeat of an earlier post with some minor updates.  I have written about William Thomas Graves entry into the Civil War and the fact that he didn’t survive the war. This article is about William Thomas and his family.

William Thomas Graves was born about 1836 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He appeared in two censuses (1850-1860) prior to his enlistment into the Civil War. He enlisted on 13 August 1862 and served with Co. C, 8th SC Infantry. William Thomas Graves died of pneumonia on 15 Oct 1862 at the age of 26 at Charlestown Hospital, Virginia in Charlestown, Virginia.

 
William Thomas Graves and Mary Gilley Lassiter were married on 26 Jul 1857 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

July 26, 1857 at the residence of James Hewitt, William Graves and Mary G. Lassiter, both of the district.

Mary Gilley Lassiter, the daughter of Eli Lassiter and Mary Gainey, was born in 1839 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. After the loss of her husband, she was found living in a POOR HOUSE on 3 Aug 1866. She died sometime after Aug 1866.
 


William Thomas Graves and Mary Gilley Lassiter had the following children:
 
i. Clarinda G. Graves, born 23 Oct 1859, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Christopher Wesley Teal, 25 Nov 1878, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 1 Aug 1933, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
 
ii. Nancy Jane Graves was born in 1862. Nancy was baptized on 1 January 1874, age 12; after that date nothing more is known about Nancy Jane Graves.

These two children are the only known children born to the union between William Thomas Graves and Mary Gilly Lassiter survived. 
 
Clarinda Graves married Christopher Wesley Teal in 1878 and they had eight children; six sons and two daughters. It is not known whether her Mother was still living on her marriage date. We do know it was a struggle caring for two children with no spouse to help and provide support.  Clarinda (Graves) Teal died 1 August 1933. 

OBITUARY: Mrs. Clara W. TEAL, widow of the late C. W. Teal of the Zoar section, died at the home of her son, E. T. Teal, Tuesday morning [1 August] at about 11 o'clock. Funeral services were held at Mr. Teal's residence Wednesday at 10 O'clock A.M., conducted by the Rev. Golie Smith, her pastor. Burial was in the Zoar cemetery. Mrs. Teal is survived by the following sons and daughters: Thurman,  E. T., M. L., Lewis P. and John W. Teal; Mrs. W. W. Davis and Mrs. S. J. Hursey. Mr. John W. Teal left his home in Omaha, Nebraska, when notified Monday night of the critical condition of his mother. Traveling by airplane he was here in time for the funeral. Mrs. Teal was over 70 years of age and had been seriously sick for about one week. She leaves her children as a precious legacy the memory of beautiful Christian motherhood. [ The Chesterfield Advertiser, 3 August 1933].
 
Teal descendants, of this couple, are still living in Chesterfield County today. 


 William Thomas Graves is the brother of my 2nd Great Grandmother Sarah Jane Graves Purvis.

Benjamin Davis was the son of Evan David, Sr. and Jane Rees and the husband of Rachel Port. Henry Davis is most likely the Grandson of Benjamin and Rachel. 

Thomas Port was the Brother of Rachel Port. 

Thomas Port's Last Will & Testament contained the following bequest: "it is my will that the residue of my personal Estate to Equally divided between my Brothers & Sisters "Children Share and Share alike." 

Benjamin Davis is my 5th Great Grand Uncle.

The Andrew Jackson Wallace Family

A reliable source for the birth of Andrew Jackson Wallace has not been found. Family folklore places his birth to have occurred around 1812 in Chesterfield District, SC. The Chesterfield County 1810 Census contains an entry for Betsey Wallace who most likely is the Mother of Andrew.

1810 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; Page#564, Line#03 Betsey WALLACE Household, 1 Female, age 16 to 25 [Betsey]; 2 Females, age under 10; 2 Males, ages 10-15 and 1 Male, age under 10. 

The next record of Betsey is a local newspaper announcement initiated by her son Eli Wallace on 3 February 1840 -- Whereas, Eli Wallace made suit to me to grant him Letters of Administration of the Estate and Effects which were of Elizabeth Wallace. This announcement  shows that Betsey Wallace died before 3 February 1840. 

Four of these 5 children are believed to be known; but, one daughter and the husband/father are still unknown.

Based on Betsey age as reported in the 1810 Census, age 16-25; she was borne between 1785-1794.

Andrew Jackson Wallace first appears in the Chesterfield County 1840 Population Census. He is married and his age is reported to be between 20-29 making his birth to have occurred between 1811- 1820. If these numbers are correct it could be interpretative as Betsey being with Child (Andrew) when the Census were taken in her home. Note: On  25 August 1861, Andrew Jackson Wallace enlisted with Capt. Kelly's Co, Light Artillery (Chesterfield Artillery) to serve in the Civil War. He reported has age as 44 making his birth year to be 1817 instead of the 1812 date that is being passed among on-line trees. 

Clearly, very little interest was place on age and birth dates in early America and the loss of record compounds this problem.

As stated, Andrew Jackson Wallace was married in 1840 and had 2 females in his household; 1 female, age 10 –14 and 1 Female, age 15 to 19. The oldest female, age 15-19 is Mary Ann Graves wife of Andrew Jackson Wallace. Their first borne child, a son, was borne about 1841.  

In 1840, Mary Ann Graves, is also found in the household of her Mother, Mary Graves, b. 1795. She (Mary Ann) was borne about 1825 making her age to be 15 in 1840. The father of Mary Ann Graves is unknown. Andrew Jackson Wallace and Mary Ann Graves were married in 1840. Records prior to the Civil War were destroyed during that war making a record of their marriage impossible to find.

Andrew Jackson Wallace was a farmer as most men were during this era. Mary Ann was a stay at home Mom.  Andrew and Mary owned a tract of land containing 225 acres on Boggy Branch.   

The 1850 Agricultural Census describes his operation thusly: 

Wallace, Jackson, was Owner, Agent, or manager of a farm consisting of 20 improved acres, and 105 unimproved acres. The cash value of the farm was $500, and the value of farming implements and machinery was $50. The livestock consisted of 1 horse(s), 0 Ass(es) and Mule(s), 2 Milch Cow(s), 0 working Oxen, 2 other cattle; 0 Sheep, and 25 Swine, valued at $155. The farm produced 0 bushel(s) of Wheat, 0 bushel(s) Rye. 150 bushel(s) Indian Corn, 0 bushel(s) of Oats, 0 lb(s) of Rice, 0 lb(s) of Tobacco, 0 bale(s) of ginned Cotton of 400 lbs, 0 lb(s) of Wool, 7 bushel(s) of Peas and Beans, 0 bushel(s) Irish potatoes, 0 bushel(s) Sweet potatoes, 0 bushel(s) of Barley, 0 bushel(s) of Buckwheat, and 0 gallon(s) of Wine. The value of the garden produce was not recorded. Also harvested was 10 lb(s) of Butter, 0 lb(s) of Cheese, and 1 ton(s) of Hay.  

On 18 May 1889, Andrew Jackson Wallace deeded a 147-acre tract of land belonging to the heirs of William Wallace to his son, Hampton Wallace for the sum of one hundred dollars. (DB 10:85)

6 March 1872, Andrew Jackson Wallace and his two sons, David and Caleb signed an agreement with S. H. Powers and Company not to exceed one hundred and fifty dollars for the said S. H. Powers and Company to supply their need in manure, provisions and family supplies for the current year. Those provisions are to be used by Andrew Jackson and his two sons to cultivate a tract of land rented by the Jackson’s from Thomas E. Powe. (DB 3, Page 704).

Many on line trees and his FindAGrave Memorial shows Andrew dying abt 1888; but, we know from Chesterfield County Deed (DB 10:85) that Andrew Jackson Wallace died after 10 May 1889. And Thanks to a fellow genealogist we now know that he received a Civil War Pension Check on 20 April 1894 making his known DEATH DATE to be AFTER 20 April 1894.

Andrew Jackson Wallace and Mary Ann Graves had the following children:

i. Andrew Jackson Wallace Jr. was born about 1841 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina

ii. Clement Clermont Wallace was born about 1844 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.  

iii. Henrietta Kelsoe Wallace, born 7 Jul 1846, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Louis J. Gainey; died 21 Jan 1916, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

  iv. David J. Wallace was born on 10 May 1847 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

v. William Caleb Wallace was born on 11 Sep 1848 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

vi. Laura C. Wallace, born abt 1850, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Samuel John Hunter, 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 12 Dec 1929, Kershaw County, South Carolina.

Mary Ann (Graves) Wallace died at some point after the 1880 Census was enumerated. No tombstone, obituary, death notice or Family Bible documenting her death has been found. Extant newspapers have been reviewed without success. 

I have one last parting comment. The Father of Betsey Wallace's children are unknown. Her husband and Companion is unknown. One thing is for certain, All the trees on-line with Isham Wallace as her husband are all creative fiction and will not pass the Genealogical Proof Standard.   

Mary Ann (Graves) Wallace and her husband Andrew Jackson Wallace are my 3rd Great Grand Aunt and Uncle.

The Marriage of John Kepley and Sarah Krawl/Crowell.

John Kepley was borne 27 Jan 1757, in Pennsylvania, a son of Peter Keppel, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Grobb. 

John Keppel  married Sarah Krawl/Crowell on 10 May 1798 in Cabarrus County, NC. His brother, Killian Kepley served as his Bondsman at the marriage. The bond in its entirety is published here:

This marriage document clearly shows that John Kepley married  Sarah Crawl.  Another document shows that Killian Kepley was his Bondsman and John Kepley as the Husband.

In May 1798, when John Kepley married Sarah Crowell, his Bondsman Killian Kepley was already married and had two children. 

Killian Kepley and his unnamed spouse/wife had the following two children when he stood in as Bondsman for John Kepley whom I believed is his (twin) brother. 

1. John Peter Kepley, born 9 Mar 1795

2. John Kepley, borne 1 October 1797

Both of the documents above names John Kepley as the Groom and Killian Kepley as the Bondsman. Yet, somehow these two men have merged into a man named John Killian Kepley. 

Ironically, his brother John and his wife, Sarah Crowell Kepley, named their first borne John Peter Kepley, borne 26 Feb 1799 in Rowan County, North Carolina. John and Sarah had 4 children; 2 sons and 2 daughters.

None of these 12 children are documented as the children of a John Killian Kepley or Johan Killian Kepley. They are either listed as a son or a daughter of John Keppel/Keple/ Kepley or Kil Keppel/Keple/Kepley. 

No record of Killian Kepley has been found after the 1800 Cabarrus County, North Carolina Census.

It's Family Time~The Peter Capley, Jr. Family

Peter Capley, Jr. was borne about 1760 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, a son of  Peter Keppel, Sr. and Anne Elizabeth Grobb. This couple had 4 sons; three of the sons, John, Killian & Henry, spelled their surname the same as their father; son, Peter, Jr spelled his surname as CAPLEY.  

Peter Capley, Jr. married Maria Barbara Grappin about 1794. Marie’s parents are unknown at this time.  Peter and Maria had a large family of 10 to 12 children. I have names for 10 of these children for whom I feel have been verified.  On line tress have several names for which I haven't found any information.

Sometime between 1807 and 1820, Peter and Maria had moved their family to Bedford County, Tennessee. Traveling with Peter and Maria were his sisters and brothers. 

I believe they made their plans to move as early as 1807.

Maria Barbara (Grappin) Capley died (date unknown) in Bedford County, Tennessee. Bedford County is a Burnt and flooded county and many of its early records have been destroyed. In the 1830 Census for Bedford, Peter Capley is age 50 to 59. The female, age 45+ in the 1820 Census is missing. The oldest female in the household is a daughter age 15 to 19 [1811-1815]. 

After the death of Maria Barbara Capley documents suggest that Peter Capley married a second time but again the wife’s name is unknown because of loss of records. In the 1850 Census for Bedford County we find Peter Capley, age 90, born in NC. Listed in the household are 7 children ranging in age from 12 to 35 [1815-1838].

Peter Capley died about 1852 in Bedford County, Tennessee. There is an exact death date on a tombstone added to his assumed burial site many years after his death. I have found no sustainable record of his death that can be substantiated with a proof document.

CALVIN HUNNICUTT, PIONEER, IS DEAD

 Calvin Welborn Hunnicutt, was borne 27 February 1827 a  son of Joseph K. Huneycutt and his wife Mary Love. Joseph and Mary moved their family to Cobb County, Georgia in 1838. In 1847, Calvin Welborn move to Atlanta to work in the  Haus & Levi  clothing store. 

In 1852, he opened a dry goods and clothing store with John Silvey under the firm name of Hunnicutt & Silvey.

In 1857, Calvin Hunnicutt married Miss Letitia Payne, They were the parents of 6 children; 4 daughters and two sons. 

CALVIN HUNNICUTT, PIONEER, IS DEAD

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD FRIDAY MORNING AT 10:30 O'CLOCK AT THE FIRST METHODIST CHURCH

Calvin Welborn Hunnicutt, Atlanta's oldest pioneer citizen and one whose efforts in business and public life have aided strongly in the upbuilding of the city, died of pneumonia shortly afternoon Wednesday at his home, 348 Spring street. Had he lived until February 27, he would have been 88 years old.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the First Methodist Church. Dr. H. M. DuBose and Dr. W. F. Glenn will officiate and interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mr. Hunnicutt was a man of many friends and his death brings sadness to hundreds of hearts in this city.

In 1857, Mr. Hunnicutt married Miss Letitia Payne, who died September 24, 1886. He leaves one son, J. E. Hunnicutt, and three daughters, Mrs. Alston H. Green, Mrs. Letitia A. Drake and Mrs. W. R. Prescott. An older son, L. L. Hunnicutt and a daughters, Mrs. Charles O. Tyner, died several years ago.

CITIZEN OF MARTHASVILLE

He came to Atlanta in 1847, when the town was known as Marthasville and lived here continuously except for a few months when he clerked in a store in Cartersville.

Mr. Hunnicutt was born in Mecklinburg County, North Carolina, February 17, 1827. With his parents, he moved to Cobb County, Georgia, in 1838. In 1847, he came to Atlanta and worked in the clothing store of Haus & Levi for his board. After two months trial, his employers gave him $12.50 a month at a branch store in Cartersville, Georgia. In 1848, he returned to Atlanta and worked for the same employers until 1852, when he opened a dry goods and clothing store with John Silvey under the firm name of Hunnicutt & Silvey. He disposed of that business in 1858 to D. O. Dougherty and entered the drug business with Dr. James A. Taylor. In 1866, he embarked in the plumbing business and the firm of Hunnicutt & Bellingrath was for many years one of the best known concerns in the city.

Only twice did he enter public life, although often urged to accept places of public trust. He was a member of the city council in 1859. After the war, he was one of the Fulton County commissioners for fourteen years, and held its chairmanship for eight years.

When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Hunnicutt organized the Fulton Dragoons - Calvary company and was elected captain, but resigned that position for his friend, Caleb Whaley, and became a lieutenant. Later, he went to Cuthbert, Georgia, as an attaché of the medical department of the confederate government.

The beginning of the war found him worth about $65,000 which he had made by hard work and industry. When the war closed, he was penniless and had to start life over again, but he was undaunted and was soon a factor in the business world of a city which had been devastated by war, but which was, liked himself, to rise above disaster and pain.

RETIRED FROM BUSINESS - Mr. Hunnicutt retired from an active business life fourteen years ago, leaving his son in charge.

He was a steward and lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, was a charter member and past master of Atlanta Lodge of Masons and was a member of the Pioneer Citizens society of Atlanta.

In a history of pioneers of Atlanta, it was written by one who knew him: Mr. Hunnicutt is distinctly a business man, a man whose efforts have tended to build up Atlanta and make a great city. He came here when the place consisted of only cross-road stores and always had faith that the city would grow to a large and prosperous metropolis. Modest, plain and unassuming, he has worked his way up to his present independent position, respected of the whole community".

It's Family Time~The Benjamin Earnhart Families

Benjamin Earnhart was born on 22 Jun 1805 in Rowan County, North Carolina, a son of George Earnhard and Margaret Keppel. His birth and baptism are recorded in the minutes of the Organ Lutheran Church Records, 1774-1882, Rowan County, North Carolina; 

Benjamin was borne 22 Jun 1805; Baptized 27 Apr. 1806, a son Ge. Ernhard with Henry Haerehe, sponsor.

Benjamin Earnhardt was twice married. He was first married to Harriett McIntosh abt 1831, most likely in Bedford Tennessee. No marriage licensee has been found in Cabarrus County, NC and their known first born arrived in 1832. 

Benjamin Earnhardt was in Rowan County in 1805 & 1806 when his birth and baptism was recorded. When his first born son was born he was in Bedford County, Tennessee. Bedford County had a hurricane that damage courthouse records in 1830 and fires in 1863 and 1934.  

Benjamin Earnhart and Harriett McIntosh had the following children:

i. John Earnhart was born about 1832 in Bedford County, Tennessee. 

ii. George W. Earnhart, born abt 1833, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Mary Ann [LNU].

iii. Mary Earnhart was born about 1835 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

iv. William A. Earnhart, born abt 1839, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Mary A. Nichols, 14 Feb 1866, Bedford, Tennessee; died bef 15 May 1897.

v. James Earnhart was born about 1848 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

vi. Green L. "Doctor" Earnhart was born on 14 Mar 1852 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He died on 11 Mar 1918 at the age of 65 in Marshall, Tennessee. 

Benjamin Earnhart and Susan were married in 1852–1860. Susan was born about 1824 in Tennessee, United States. She died after 2 Oct 1882 at the age of 58.

An exact  death date for Harriett McIntosh has not been found; nor have as exact Marriage date been found for either spouse and that's significant in the case of wife #2 Susan [LNU].  

Note this conflict: The 1860 Census shows that Harriett McIntosh was alive on 11 August 1860.  The 1870 Census show that Benjamin Earnhart has a new wife named Susan [LNU], age 46. It further shows that they have two young daughters Amy Earnhart, age 7 and Martha Earnhart, age 5. This would seem to indicate that Harriett (McIntosh) Earnhart, 1st wife of Ben Earnhart died between 11 August 1860 and the birth of Amy Earnhart  minus 9 Months. The only Birth date found for Amy Earnhart is 19 Aug 1860 that is listed on her tombstone which looks to be a period tombstone. [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/42111660/amy-liggett]

Benjamin Earnhart and Susan  had the following children:

i. Amy Earnhart, born 19 Aug 1860, Bedford County, Tennessee; married John Henry Newton Liggett, 29 Aug 1878, Bedford County, Tennessee; died 9 Dec 1897, Hanford, Kings, California.

ii. Martha Earnhart was born about 1865 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

Benjamin Earnhart died in October or November 1882. On 2 October 1882 he wrote his Last Will and Testament. on 6 November 1882, a Bond was issued by the Bedford County Court naming Herman Harris the Administrator of the Estate of Benjamin Earnhart, deceased.

Benjamin Earnhardt is my 1st Cousin 5X Removed.
