Surname Saturday – Brock

Brock, of Swiss origin, originally spelled Brach, Brack

My grandmother was a Brock – Mamie Catherine Brock.  Mamie was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Brock and Louise Ellen Sellers.

The progenitor of all the Brock in Chesterfield County, South Carolina is Johan Valentine Brock. Johan Valentine who was born abt 1712 in Oberhochstadt  (now called Hochstadt) Pfaltz, Germany. He came to America in 1751 with his first wife Anna. His father is Hans Jacob Brack of Switzerland.

Sometime between leaving Germany and arriving in America, his first wife passed away and he remarried on Nov 11, 1760, in Germantown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His second wife was a young lady named Susanna Bleaster.

By 1790, Johan Valentine and Susanna had migrated southward to Richmond County, North Carolina. They can be found in the 1790 U. S. Population census.

Up to this point, the line is well proven and documented. The loss of records during the Civil War has made this lineage a works-in-progress searching for any available document to prove the line.

DNA testing[1] of this line has proven it back to Johan Valentine Brack and the Swiss Brack families.

William, a brother to James Brock, moved from Chesterfield to Mississippi
In 1818 when the Gilbert Purvis clan moved; going through Georgia to Clarke County, Alabama and later settling around Simpson and Hinds County, Mississippi; later divided up into Rankin and Copiah Counties. His line has also been DNA tested and proven back to the Swiss Brack families.

  4. I am trying to trace my husband's family. The last entry I have is James Albert Brock born December 6, 1829 in Chesterfield, SC. He moved from Chesterfield SC to Florida between 1857 and 1860. His first wife was Mary Jane White who was believed to die in 1869 giving birth to a daughter Jane Brock. James Albert Brock and Mary Jane White were the parents of Squire Lafayette Brock born September 7, 1857 in Chesterfield, SC. He married Mary M. Silas. He died February 19, 1934 in Chiefland, Levy County, Florida. Squire and Mary Silas were the parents of my husband's Grandparents Moses Ephraim and Ruby Mae Ward Brock of Levy County, Florida. Do you know who the parents of James Albert Brock were?
