James M. Purvis, son of William Purvis and Millie Cook was born 1 April 1830. He married Martha Carolina Russell on 17 December 1855 in Rankin County, Mississippi.

In January 1861 the Civil War was started when South Carolina succeeded from the Union. James M. Purvis had a wife and 3 young children yet he enlisted into Company D, 6^th Mississippi Infantry on 24 August 1861.

James M. Purvis survived the war and returned home to his family to find that those furlough home had resulted in two more children. James M. Purvis died 18 Jan 1909 in Smith County, Mississippi. He was buried in the Rock Bluff Cemetery, Smith County, Mississippi.
