Death of Mr. J. T. Hunley, a Prominent Citizen
Special to The State.
Cheraw, Oct. 25.—Mr. J. T. Hunley died at his home at Chesterfield at 8:15 o’clock yesterday evening after a severe spell of fever. Mr. Hunley was one of the leading merchants of the county and a man whose death will inflict a severe loss upon Chesterfield. He will be buried tomorrow at Chesterfield at 12 m., with Masonic honors. 1

James Franklin was the son of Pleasant Pincton Pigg – and Farnetty Beaver. Family folklore says that James had his surname changed in the 1880's, and adopted the name of "HUNLY". It appears that his children changed the spelling of the name "Hunly" to HUNLEY.

The obituary for James Franklin Hunley  lists him as J. T. Hunley, a minor error. James Franklin Hunley married Catherine Jane Davis about 1877. Catherine Jane was my 2nd cousin 3 times removed.
