David M. Sellers was the middle son of Phillip A. Sellers and Sarah Frances Jarman. He had an older brother Robert Earl and a younger brother called William Arnold.

Phillip A. Sellers, their father, died 11 April 1896 leaving his wife a widow with a 9 month old son and two others sons ages 2 and four.  Sarah Frances Jarman Sellers moved taking the boys to Pitt County, North Carolina.
