Thomas Davis misidentified as Thomas Lloyd Davis

Thomas Lloyd Davis does not and never did exist. He’s the result of someone’s poor research methods and family researchers that keep propagating this falsehood by copying it from tree to tree.

Tombstone:
The first evidence of this obvious misrepresentation is Thomas Davis tombstone in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, where his name is clearly shown as Thos. Davis.1

There is no “middle name” between Thos. and Davis. Lloyd’s S. C. Militia is the unit he was attached to during the Revolutionary War. Thomas Davis served under Capt. Thomas Lloyd. ,

Military Record & Pension File
His Revolutionary War military and pension file list his name as Thomas Davis. 2

Census:
Thomas Davis is listed in the 1790-1840 Censuses. In all 5 of these censuses he is listed as Thomas Davis with no middle name or initial. 3 4 5 6 7 8

1778 Petit Jury List – Cheraw District
“The Jury Lists of 1778 - 1779 were copied from the original handwritten lists on deposit at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia, South Carolina (Compiled by Gelee Corley Hendrix and Morn McKoy Lindsay). The names in this book are in the same sequence as the original lists, and every effort was made to copy the names exactly as written, including misspellings.” 9 On this list as Thomas Davis.
