1838 Land Deed~William James Purvis to Benjamin E. Philips

This land deed was executed on 24 April 1838 between William James Purvis and Benjamin E. Philips. William James is selling off Eighty acres and Sixty three hundredths acres of his land.

This indenture made the 24^th day of April 1838 between William J. Purvis of the first part, and Benjamin E. Philips of the second part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of sixteen hundred and thirteen dollars and sixty cents the said William J. Purvis hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain sell alien convey and confirm to the said Benjamin E. Philips two half sights of land in Hinds County being the North half of the East half of the North East quarter of section twenty seven, and the North half of the West half of the North West quarter of section twenty six, both in Township five Range One West in the Choctaw District … … Mount Silas containing together Eighty acres and Sixty three hundredths part of an acre be the same more or less with its appurtenances to have and to hold the two parcels of land with the appurtenances to Benjamin E. Philips and his heirs and assigns forever. And the said William J. Purvis for himself and his heirs the aforesaid land to the aforesaid Benjamin E. Philips against the lawful claim of all and every person or persons whatsoever doth ever make forever warrants and defend. The testimony of which the said William J. Hinds County} Personally appeared before the undersigned and acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county William J. Purvis who acknowledged that he signed Seal and delivered the foregoing deed as his act and deed for the purpose therein contained. His wife, Millie Cook Purvis was required to sign a “dower release” before this transaction could take place. This and others deeds in Hinds and Rankin County clearly shows that William Purvis son of James F. Purvis, Sr. was named and used the name William James Purvis. Yet, there are many “Public & private trees on-line that has his name listed as William Forbes Purvis.



I have looked for almost 40 years for one single source document that shows William Purvis name listed as William Forbes Purvis and yet to find that documents.

I know this will reach a limited audience and it will not stop these “at home researchers” that copy anything and everything and accepts it as gospel. But, I will say it one more time:

William Purvis, d. abt 1796, Chesterfield, SC d. bef 1870 in MS, son of James F. Purvis, Sr. was named and known as William James Purvis. There is NO William Forbes Purvis in this line of Purvis’s.
