John E. Sellers was born about 1833 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, a son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. He was the fourth born of seven children with 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Both he and his younger brother, Elijah Sellers were Killed in Action (KIA) on 28 May 1864 at the Battles of Haw’s Shop also known as the Battle of Enon Church.1 2

John E. Sellers enlisted on 26 December 1861 at Cheraw, South Carolina as a 3rd Sgt. into Company “A”, Rutledge’s Regiment Cavalry, also known as 4th cavalry. He was Promoted to 2nd Sgt on 1 December 1862 and to 1st Sgt prior to May-June 1863.  

Both John E. and Elijah Sellers are shown as buried in the McNair Family Cemetery. Elijah was married to Harriett E. daughter of Neil McNair and Mary Crawford. John E. Sellers was never married.
