Chesterfield County Probate Folder #578~Robert Bennett Turnage


Robert Bennett Turnage, son of John M. Turnage and Effie Wallace was born on 3 August 1829. in the mid 1850 around 1855, Robert married Christian Freeman. Christian was born 15 April 1843, a daughter of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis. 

Robert spent his life as farmer raising a large family. Between 1856 and 1885, Robert and Christian had twelve children; eight sons and four daughters. 

Robert lost his beloved, Christian, 29 August 1892. On 17 July 1896, Robert passed away and was buried beside Christian in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.
After his death, his son Hampton submitted letters to administer his estate. The estate file is very sparse consisting of a title page and two documents.

State of South Carolina} Court of
County of Chesterfield } Probate
The petition of Hampton Turnage shows to this Court
1. That Robert B. Turnage a citizen of the county of Chesterfield and state aforesaid died intestate on or about the 17th day of July 1896 leaving a small personal Estate amounting to about Thirty dollars in the County and State aforesaid upon which administration will be necessary in order that the same may be settled
2. That your petitioner is his son wherefore your petitioner prays for letters of Administration upon the Estate of said intestate.

County of Chesterfield}
I, ? T. L. Huntley Probate Judge Whereas Hampton Turnage made suit to me [to] grant him letters of Administration of the Estate of and effects of Robert B. Turnage.
These are therefore to cite and admonish all and singular the kindred and creditors of the said Robert B. Turnage deceased that they be and appear before me in the court of Probate to be held at Chesterfield on the 25th of November next after publication thereof at 11 o’clock in the forenoon to show cause if any they have why the said Administration should not be granted.
Given under my hand this 8th day of Nov 1897.

Robert’s wife, Christian Freeman, is my 1st cousin 4 times removed.
