Capt. Richard T. Powell was the son of Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright. He had three sisters. Capt. Powell and his family is a real mystery. Except for his service during the Civil War, almost nothing is known about him.

The 1880 Census for Chesterfield County shows him married to M. W. T. with a son and a daughter. Also in the household are two of his sisters.

Capt. Richard T. Powell, Civil War Record consists of 82 pages on Fold3.com.
He enlisted at Florence, SC on 13 April 1861. By November 1862 he had been promoted to Captain. He had a few episodes of illness, spent some time in hospital and on furlough. One card referenced some kidney disease. He was wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. On September 13, 1864 he was captured near Opequon Creek, Winchester, VA by the 1st Brigade, 3rd Calvary Division on Berryville and Winchester Pike.

He was released from prisoner of war status on OATH of ALLEGIANCE signed on 16 June 1965. The War had previously ended with the signing of the Terms of Surrender by Generals Lee & Grant on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

His grave was found during the expansion of Highway #9 through Chesterfield County in the 1970’s. His and two other graves were relocated to Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
