Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #284–Kenneth Pittman

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

This estate folder begins at image #85 and ends with image #138. (images 85-138)

Kenneth Pittman’s tombstone in the Stroud Family Cemetery shows that he was born on 19 June 1800.  Kenneth married Nancy Campbell about 1831. Their firstborn a son, William J., was born about 1832. Over the next 14 years they would have 6 daughters and finally a son, Jesse, as their last born and 8th child in August 1846. 

Their daughter Sarah Jane married my great grand Uncle James Arnold ‘Buck’ Sellers.  Kenneth and Nancy both passed away within 3 months of each other in 1881; Nancy in June and Kenneth in August, 

On 3 October 1881, John A. Jones was appointed Administrator of the estate of Kenneth Pittman.

In the Matter of the Estate}

Kenneth Pittman}
Deceased

The petition of John A. Jones respectively Shows to this court

1. That Kenneth Pittman a resident and Citizen late of the County and State aforesaid died intestate about the last of August A. D. 1881 intestate leaving as his heirs at law and distributes the following children, to wit: William J. Pittman, Jesse Pittman, Martha Pittman, Nancy Pittman, Martha who intermarried with Thomas Davis, Sarah who intermarried with J. Arnold Sellers, Margaret who intermarried with William Vaughn.
2. That said intestate left a Small personal Estate and the above named heirs at law and distributees have request your petitioner to apply for Letters of Administration upon the Estate of Said intestate.
Wherefore your petitioner prays that letters of Administration be granted to him upon said Estate by the Court.

This is a key document in that it shows when Kenneth died and all his heirs at law.
