James W. Huneycutt, age 28, enlisted into Company ‘C”, 42th NC Infantry.1 The 42th NC Infantry was organized at Salisbury, North Carolina, in April, 1862. The unit served gallantly until it’s surrendered with the Army of Tennessee at the end of the War. Unit members consisted of men from Mecklenburg, Catawba, Iredell, Rowan, Davie, Davidson and Stanly counties.
James W. Huneycutt enlisted on March 27, 1862 for 3 years or the War. The 42nd was commanded by Colonel George C. Gibbs, of Florida. Company “C:” consisting mostly of men from Stanly County, NC were led by Capt. D.A. Underwood, Stanly Co. and Capt. Jas. A. Howell, Stanly Co. There were 10 Company’s within the 42nd Infantry.
The 42nd NC Infantry fought at:
- Cold Harbor, took its place in the
- Petersburg trenches,
- ended the war with the Army of Tennessee
“This unit lost 6 killed and 48 wounded at Ware Bottom Church and had 1 killed, 2 wounded, and 74 missing at Sugar Loaf. It surrendered on April 26, 1865.” 2
James W. Huneycutt, son of Mark Huneycutt and Charity Dry, survived the war to return home to his family; wife Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Page Huneycutt and their two daughters Louvena and Nellie Isabella. After the war they would have 3 more children, a son and two additional daughters.
Mark Huneycutt and Charity Dry are my 3rd Paternal Great Grandparents.
James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page are my 2nd Great Grandparents.
Louvena Huneycutt is my Great Grand Mother.
