Treasure Chest Thursday~Proof of Aaron Copeland Marriage to Mary Melton

Aaron Copeland and Mary ‘Polly’ Melton, daughter of Isham Melton, were married about 1784.

Aaron Copeland applied for a Revolutionary War Pension (R-2308) which was rejected. The file contains genealogical information pertaining to Aaron, Polly and his service.
Below is a portion of an affidavit submitted by (he says (Archibald)) the only surviving child, his son Archibald Copeland.

Affidavit of Archibald Copeland

Transcription:
“this deponent further says that he has been informed and believes that his said Father intermarried with one Polly Melton deponents Mother and the daughter of one Isham Melton of the District and State aforesaid about the year 1784, that Aaron Copeland died about the years 1839 having survives his wife about six or seven years, leaving ten children of whom deponent is the Sole survivor, all which facts as to as to the Service of said Aaron will…”

Chesterfield District} Personally appeared before me W. A. Mulloy a magistrate in and for said district John Evans & Edward Mulloy who being duly sworn saith that they were acquainted with Aaron Copeland in his life time that he inter married with Mary Melton daughter of Isham Melton and that said Aaron Copeland died in the year 1839. They further sate that they have no reason to doubt but that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war.

Chesterfield District} I, J. C. Craig Clerk of the Court for said district do hereby certify that Wm. A. Mulloy before whom the foregoing affidavit was made was at the date thereof an acting Magistrate in & for said district duly qualified as such and that his signature thereto is genuine

NOTICE 3
MOSES COPELAND, Thomas Copeland, Elisha Copeland, James Copeland, Mary Swor, and Dolly Cook, children of Aaron Copeland late of Chesterfield District, South Carolina, are hereby notified that the said Aaron Copeland died leaving a Will by which a small legacy is given to each of the above named persons, which may be has upon application to
