Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #158 – A. G. Douglass


Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Arch G. Douglass moved from Harnett County to Chesterfield County sometime in the early 1870's. By early 1880 he had been here long enough to get acquainted with Anna Jane Odom, daughter of  John Dwight Odom and Sarah Jane Freeman, marry her and beget a son, Walter Archie Douglass, age 9.

Sadly, this family would  be devastated with the death of Arch G. Douglass, age 38, on 6 May 1889.

At the wish of the family D. M. Barentine submitted the following request to the Courts.

State of South Carolina}
County of Chesterfield}
To Hon. H. D. Tiller Judge of Probate for Chesterfield County.
The petition of the undersigned respectively represents to the Court.
1st. That A. G. Douglass late of Chesterfield County died intestate on the 6th day of May 1889 leaving a personal estate amounting to about Five hundred dollars.
2nd. That letters of Administration has not issued to any one, and that the heirs of Said Estate have mutually agreed for letters of Administration to be granted to the undersigned, wherefore your Petitioner prays that letters of Administration be granted unto him in order that the said Estate may be managed and Settled up according to law and your petitioner will ever pray &c.

Letters of Administration were issued to D. M. Barentine on 22 May 1889 (Image 135).

Inventory of the Estate was carried out by J. F. Hunley who certified on 22 May 1889 that a correct appraisement had been made. Contained within the probate folder is a list of all buyers present at the estate sale.

Final distribution of the proceeds from the Estate sale went to two individuals, the widow, Anna Jane Odom Douglass and their only child, Walter Archie Douglass.

On  18 December 1894, Probate was closed on the Estate of Arch. G. Douglass. That same year, 1894, Anna Jane Odom Douglass remarried to a young man by the name of Sidney Douglass.

Anna Jane Odom Douglass died 17 February 1928 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
