Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

On October 12, 1897, Irvin Samuel Brock, a widower, died unexpectedly leaving 4 small children ranging in age from 7 to 19. This probate for Guardianship of these children was a result of his death.

Chesterfield County} In Probate Court-
ExParte-
Minnie Brock, May Brock Alliene Brock and Coit Brock
I. That they are infants over the age of fourteen years and their father and mother have both died and they are entitled to a small estate coming from their father life insurance amounting to 800 along with their brother Coit Brock who is an infant under the age of fourteen and who lives with them.
II. That in order to get the said insurance money it is necessary to have a guardian appointed and they desire that their Uncle P. H. Brock be appointed guardian for themselves and their brother Coit Brock.
Wherefore they pray that said P. H. Brock be appointed guardian for them and will ever pray &c Dec 18th 1897

Irvin Samuel and Peter Haley Brock were brothers and businessmen in Cheraw, South Carolina. It was no surprise that Peter Haley Brock stepped in to act as guardian for these children.
These children are my 2nd Cousins twice removed.

I understand that this came from another time but I am always amazed when women were not automatically in charge of their own children. A man had to be appointed guardian. Of course, it now gives us great genealogy information.
