Amanuensis Monday~Trust Deed Between William A. Purvis and a Local Business called Marshall and Richardson, 1879

Today’s subject is an Anson County Trust Deed between William A. Purvis and a Local Business called Marshall and Richardson, 1879.1

William A. Purvis is my 2nd great grandfather. He and his son, William James (my great Grandfather) are trying to make a living farming approximately 100 acres of land. From what I can see in the available Trust Deeds they did manage to eke out a living from year to year.

Before turning to farming, my 2nd Great grandfather listed his occupation as a shoemaker. When this failed to provide for his growing family he turned to farming.

On 23 September 1899, William A. Purvis and his wife Betsy sold to J. D. Rhyne 12 acres of land for Fifty-four dollars (DB 33:370). These 12 acres were sliced off of the last 30 acres remaining in his ownership. Eighteen acres were preserved to support his 2nd wife Betsy and daughter Ella Frances. A year later Betsy sold the remaining  18 acres to J. D. Rhyne and moved in with her daughter and new son-in-law, Tom Tarleton. 

William A. Purvis is not listed in the 1900 Census and Betsy is listed as a widow. The census was enumerated on 28 June 1900.

William A. Purvis died between 23 September 1899 and 28 June  1900. No grave, tombstone or death notice has been found.

W. A. Purvis to Marshall + Richardson
State of North Carolina}
County of Anson } Whereas Marshall + Richardson of Anson County in the State of North Carolina has agreed to make advances to W. A. Purvis of the county of Anson and the State aforesaid for purposes of agriculture during the year A.D. 1879 to the value of One Hundred & Sixty Dollars and such further sums as the said Marshall + Richardson may deem necessary to be made not to exceed the sum of Two Hundred Dollars; and whereas the said W. A. Purvis desires to secure to the said Marshall + Richardson prompt payment for the advances made in accordance with the provisions of the Acts of General Assembly in such cases made and provided ratified on the 1st day of March 1867 and the Act to re-enact and amend the same ratified March 1st 1873, doth by these presents sell, transfer and agrees to deliver to the said Marshall + Richardson on the 1st day of October so much cotton, corn and other products raised by him during the present year as shall be sufficient to pay for the supplies to be furnished as aforesaid, which conveyance and transfer shall create a lien in favor of the said Marshall + Richardson to the extent of the advances made or to be made upon all the crop the said W. A. Purvis may raise during the present year and for further security the said W. A. Purvis bargains, sells + conveys to the said Marshall + Richardson the following articles of personal property to wit: one mouse colored mule, one one Horseway and three cows + calves - two yearlings - seven head of hogs - one Sow and six pigs, farming tools + with the understanding that if the said W. A. Purvis shall will and truly pay the said Marshall + Richardson for the advances as aforesaid on or before the 15th day of October the said lien shall be discharged and the said property shall revert to the said W. A. Purvis, otherwise the said Marshall + Richardson shall have power to take unto their possession all of said property and crop on the farm or elsewhere if removed and sell the same or so much thereof for cash, as may be necessary to pay for the advances aforesaid attorney's fees, registration and any other expenses incurred in executing this provision first advertising said sale for ten at three public places in the county. I the said W. A. Purvis do hereby certify that no other lien or mortgage has been given upon said crop or property. If this claim is not paid at maturity to bear interest at the rate of 8 per cent annum from date hereof to the payment. In witness whereof the said W. A. Purvis has hereunto set his hand and seal this 3 day of March A. D. 1879.

Anson County} The due execution of the foregoing Lien and Mortgage was proven before me this day by the oath and examination of W. C. Hardison the subscribing witness. Let the same with this certificate be registered. This the 3rd day of March A.D. 1879.
