Stephen Jackson to David Jackson Deed of Gift, 1785.

The loss of Chesterfield County records during the Civil War makes research in the County very tedious and problematic. But, there are alternatives if you are willing to spend the time.

In the mid 1700 to early 1800 Chesterfield County, then known as Craven County and Cheraw District had many of their land deeds recorded in Charleston., South Carolina.

Today's Land Deed is a case in point. Stephen Jackson to David Jackson Deed of Gift was recorded in Charleston Deed Book O-5, page 8 in the year 1785.

In this land deed, Stephen Jackson is conveying a 200 acre tract of land on Thompson Creek as a Deed of Gift to David Jackson. Also named within the Deed is Benjamin Jackson and Edward Jackson.

Relationship are unknown but most likely Father, Son and Brothers.

Stephen Jackson to David Jackson Deed of Gift
To all people whome this Present Writing shall come I Stephen Jackson fo [of] Craven County in South Carolina send greeting know ye that I the said Stephen Jackson for divers good cause & valuable consideration M E thereunto moving have given & granted and by these Presents do give grant and confirm unto David Jackson of South Carolina Craven County A Tract of Land containing two hundred Acres butted and bounded as follows Viz Beginning at Drys Line at a White Oak on the South Side of Thompson Creek Runing No. 130 poles to a pine then Et. 130 poles to a Stake thence So. 130 poles to a stake then to the first Station all and Singular the Land & tenaments and Apurtenances to the said Land to hold to him the said David Jackson his heirs Exetutors <sic> Administrators and Assigns from henceforth to his or there proper use and uses thereof and therewith to do order and didspose at his or their Will & Pleasure as of their own proper Land and Tenaments freely & Peaceablely and Quietly without any other person or persons whatsoever all of which premises I the said Stephen Jackson have put the said David Jackson in full and Peacable Prosison [Possession] by vertue hereof in Witness whereof I the

Sealed and delivered in presents of Joseph Griffith Edward Jackson South Carolina Cheraw District By Benj. Jackson one of the Justices for said District Joseph Griffith came before me and being duly sworn on the Holy Avangelistic of Almighty God Deposeth and saith that he saw Stephen Jackson sign seal and deliver this deed as his Act and deed for the use within mentioned and that he saw Edward Jackson sign as a concuring Evidence with him.  Sworn to ye 2nd day of March 1784 Benj. Jackson Except what should fall on Benj. Jackson Lines recorded and examined No. 779 the 12th day of February 1785 by
