Prior to World War I, our military was very limited in size. Realizing that it was becoming inevitable to avoid entry into the war in Europe, Congress passed the Selective Service Act of 1917 requiring all men between the age of 21-30 to register for the draft. In August 1918, at the War Department request, the Act was amended and expanded to include all men between the ages of 18-45.

This amendment resulted in my Grandfather James Frances Purvis registering for the draft on 12 September 1918. 

At the time of registering, James Frances Purvis was married with 3 boys ranging in age between 1 and 7 years. One of those boys was my Father. Two months after registering for the draft, WWI ended on 11 November 1918. Grandpa has been spared from having to leave his family. 

James Frances Purvis is my Grandfather. He died six years before I was born.
