One of my greatest genealogical disappointments is that I have not been able to determine the parents of my maternal 2nd Great Grandfather, Hezekiah "Hugh" Brock.
We know that the Chesterfield County Brock's are all descendants of Valentine Brack and his two wives Anna Margaretha Lischer and Susanna Blaester.
One of those children was a James Brock born 13 September 1749 and died 15 Dec 1847. His full name might have been James Valentine Brock. His wife is unknown,
In 1790, THERE WERE NO BROCK's in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. The immigrant Valentine Brock was found in the Fayette District of Richmond County, North Carolina just across the state line with South Carolina and Chesterfield County.

In 1800 CENSUS, that had changed and we find
- Valentine Brock
- James Brock
- Susanna Brock
The numbers changed again in 1810 CENSUS and at that time we find:
- Valentine Brock
- James Brock
-
William Brock [Moved to LA & MS]
The 1820 Census consisted of the following Brock families:
- Valentine Brock
- James Brock
- Benjamin Brock
- It's easy to see with a matrix that the Valentine and James Brock family has been consistent over the past years just aging another 10 years with the taking of each Census. It also easy to see that Benjamin Brock, age 26-45 in 1820 came from the James Brock family.
And finally the 1830 Census:
- Valentine Brock is no longer listed
- James Brock is same James we have followed from 1800 till now
- Benjamin is the same Benjamin Brock from 1820
- Squire Brock
- Samuel Brock
- Squire and Samuel are new families and again from the matrix included below the only family with boys this age is the James Brock family.
Let's take a look at these 3 families and see if we can place Hezekiah with one of the families.
First: Squire H. Brock
In the 1830 census Squire H. Brock family composition was:

1 male, 0-5;
1 male, 20-30;
1 female, 0-5;
1 female, 15-20;
We can see that Squire and his wife Rachel Parker only had two children, a daughter the oldest, Mary A. Brock and a son younger, James Albert Brock.
Many on-line trees have Hezekiah with this family because they think the middle H in Squire's name is Hezekiah. There is no proof found that shows what the "H" represents.
Second: Samuel Brock
In the 1830 census Samuel Brock family composition was:
1830 Chesterfield, SC:
Samuel BROCK
2 male, 0-5;
1 male, 30-40;
1 female, 5-10;
1 female, 20-30
Samuel W. Brock, b. 1796 and his wife Martha/Marcia had two young sons and a daughter in this Census. The sons are of the proper age that one may have been Hezekiah; but, when we research the family we find that those two young sons are William P. Brock, Joel Washington Brock and the daughter is Sarah Ann Brock.
So that leaves Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance. The 1830 Census shows the Benjamin Brock family as follows:

3 male, 5-10;
1 male, 40-50;
1 female, 0-5;
1 female, 40-50;
We see that Benjamin and his wife Temperance had 5 males borne before 1830 and two borne in the proper time slot for one of these boys to be Hezekiah and I say Hezekiah is the son of Benjamin and Temperance [LNU] Brock.
Many years ago, I was given some information suggesting the Hezekiah and an older brother had married sisters. I haven't totally proven or unproven this information; but, Hezekiah Brock, my 2nd Great Grandfather married Sarah "Sallie" Morris; his oldest brother, Alsey Brock married Lucy Morris. Lucy Morris and Sarah Morris were sisters and daughters of Wiley Morris and Charity Short.
The mass destruction of pre Civil war public records and the deliberate acts of arson in the burning of the County Courthouse by the Union forces in early March 1865 is extremely distressing.
However, the remaining records and evidence including family folklore all points to one conclusion: Hezekiah Brock is the son of Benjamin Brock and Temperance, his wife. I just wish for one document supporting this conclusion.
