The Children of Peter Capley and Maria Barbara Grappin

Peter Capley was borne Peter Keppel about 1760 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He was a son of Peter Keppel, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Grobb. Peter married Maria Barbara Grappin about 1794. In the 1800 Census for Rowan County he is listed as Peter Keppel but a few years later a land deed refers to him as Peter Kapple. By 1820, he and his wife Barbara are in Bedford County, Tennessee and he is listed with the surname Copley. After 1820, in all documents he is listed as Peter Capley.

The various surname changes has made it somewhat difficult to identify and place family members.  A modern day monument claims that Peter and Barbara had 11 children which matches the number of individuals within the household in the 1820 Census; but, have the proper eleven children been identified and verified. This monument also contained a birth date of 1 May 1768 for Peter Capley with no source.

So what is the difference? In my research, I identified 9 children of which 8 matches the Capley Monument.

The one name I have that does not match the Monument is the birth and baptism of John Capley on 10 January 1812 in Rowan County.

Conversely, the Capley Monument had three names for which I have found no connection to the Peter & Maria Barbara Capley family.

1. Michael Capley
2. Salome Capley
3. Mary Ann Capley

In the Organ Lutheran Church records, Salisbury, Rowan County, NC there is a Salome Keple born 28 December 1806, Baptized 29 March 1807; but, her father is not listed as Peter Keple. Her father is Jos. Keple. 

There are no listings in these records of a Michael or Mary Ann Capley/Keple born to any Keple family. However, in the 1850 Census Bedford County in the Peter Capley, age 90, household there is a Michael Capley, age 28 and Mary Ann Capley, age 29; both are presumed to be children of Peter and Maria Barbara Capley. 

Another puzzle is why did Peter name a son John Martin and then a later name another son, John. If you have any information on this family I would like to collaborate with you. My email Contact can be found on this page.

KEPLEY, JACOB N., Private
Previously served as Private in Company A of this regiment. Transferred to this company prior to September 2, 1862. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, September 6, 1862, with intermittent fever. Transferred to Salisbury on or about September 19, 1862. Reported absent without leave in November-December, 1862. Reported at home on furlough in January-May, 1863. Returned to duty in May-August, 1863. Reported present on surviving company muster rolls through April 30 1864. Captured at Frederick, Maryland, on or about July 9, 1864. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Elmira, New York, July 23, 1864. Paroled at Elmira on October 11, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, November 15, 1864 for exchange. Reported absent sick from December 1, 1864, through February 28, 1865. Paroled at Salisbury on May 3, 1865."1

 
Not Deserters.--- Corporal C. D. Faris and Private J. N. Kepley, Co. K, 7th Regiment, have called at our office to complain that they have been unjustly advertised by Capt. G. A. J. Suchler, as deserters. They have papers which acquit them of the disgraceful charge, and desire the public to know it.
Mr. Kepley states further, that Sergeant J. A. Klutts, who is also advertised in the same notice, is at the Hospital in Raleigh unfit for duty.
Mr. R. M. Thomason, we are informed, is also unable to perform service, and had been in the Hospital four months.
It is very cruel that honest, good men should be thus needlessly wounded and wronged, and all because some Surgeon neglects to report the extension of furlough.2  

Jacob Nathaniel Kepley was born 25 April 1832, a son of John Peter Kepley and Rachael Simison. Jacob N. Kepley married Delia Loretta Johnson on 26 February 1856 and had two sons before enlisting into the Civil War. After the war, he and his wife would have 6 additional children.

Jacob N. Kepley died on 26 February 1888. His youngest child, a daughter, would celebrate her 4th birthday a month later on 28 March 1888. His wife, Delia Loretta would live an additional 38 years passing away on 21 December 1926 in Rowan County, NC.

Jacob Nathaniel Kepley is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.

It’s Family Time~The Short Life of Anna (Kepley) Goodman

Today posting is about the very short life of Anna Kepley. Sadly, we know very little of her time here on earth. Anna Kepley was borne about 1823, a daughter of John Peter Kepley and Rachel Simison. Her parents were married on 9 April 1821 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Since she was their 1st borne its most likely that Anna grew up and spent her childhood and adult life in Rowan County, NC.

At the age of 19, Anna Kepley married Tobias Goodman on 14 March 1842 in Rowan Couth, North Carolina. Their first borne, a daughter, arrived about 1844. Their next child, a daughter, arrived on 6 September 1846. Two and one half years later their third and final child, a son, arrived on 16 Jan 1849.  Shortly after her son’s arrival, Anna’s father John Peter Kepley died sometime near September 1849. Rachel, his widow, was the administratrix of her husband’s estate. Probate of the estate took place on 24 August 1849. 

Then as unexpectedly as her Father’s death at age 54; Anna passed away sometime before 13 November 1852 at age 29. On 13 November 1852, Tobias Goodman married Rosa Mariah Crotzer, as his second wife.  Also on 10 June 1858, Racheal (Simison) Kepley wrote her last Will and Testament without mentioning her daughter, Anna, another indication that she was deceased. All her other eight children were named within her Last Will and Testament. Racheal (Simison) Kepley  died sometime shortly before 1860.

Tobias Goodman and Anna Kepley had the following children:

i. Rosanna C. Goodman was born about 1844.

ii. Rachel Elizabeth Goodman, born 6 Sep 1846; married Joseph Alexander Brady, 15 Oct 1867, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 2 Jan 1882.

iii. George A. Goodman, born 16 Jan 1849; married Martha Ann May, 12 Dec 1872, Rowan County North Carolina; died 13 Nov 1931, Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.

No birth or death record has yet been found for Anna (Kepley) Goodman.

Anna (Kepley) Goodman is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.

It’s Family Time~ The John Killian Kepley Family

 On 24 April 2021 I wrote about the John Peter Kepley Family. John Peter Kepley was the first borne son of Killian Kepley.

Today, we will look at The John Killian Kepley Family. John Killian Kepley was borne  27 Jan 1757 in Goshenhoppen, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, bapt. March 13, 1757 son of Peter Keppel and wife Anna Elisabeth. (Sponsors: Killian Gauckel and wife Maria Margaretta). ¹

His parents Peter Keppel, Sr.  and wife Anna Elisabeth Grobb immigrated to the United States in 1765. They migrated to North Carolina sometime between 1761 and 1770. It was during this time period that their daughter Catherine, wife of John Martin Dry was borne. John Martin Dry and Catherine Kepley are my 4th Great Grandparents.

During this same time period their Son, John Killian Kepley along with other siblings also arrived. At least four of those siblings including John Killian were borne in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. John Killian Kepley settled in Rowan County, while his father settled in Cabarrus county.

John Killian Kepley married about 1794 either in Cabarrus or Rowan County. His WIFE is UNKNOWN. 

Clarification: Many, maybe ALL but me Say that John Killian Kepley married Sarah Krawl/Crowell. This is just not so. His twin brother John Kepley married Sarah Crawl/ Crowell. John Killian wife’s name is unknown.  

Proof: He is the Bondman for a John Kepley marriage to Sarah Crawl. Since he is the Bondsman he certainly cannot be the Husband.

I have identified 8 children borne and baptized stating that Killian Kepley is their father. Not a single one of those eight records named the wife of Killian Kepley or the Mother of the children said be the children of Killian Kepley.

The book contains 408 pages of South Carolina Civil War deaths. The Book was first commission in September 1862, by the People of South Carolina when they requested documentation be preserved of the names of all South Carolina soldiers who gave their all-in defense of the state. Earlier copies of the Roll were determined to be full of errors. In 1864, the job was given to Professor William James Rivers who dedicated his life to fulfilling the tasks of identifying every soldier who gave his life for South Carolina. “The Roll of the Dead sat unidentified in the National Archives until 1993...."1

It’s Family Time~The Family of Sarah Ann Brock Davis

 Sarah Ann Brock, daughter of Samuel W. Brock and his wife Martha was born 1826 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. No birth date has been found for Sarah Ann; but, based on the 1850 Census her birth year is 1826. She was the first known child and had 8 siblings.

About 1868, Sarah Ann, now age  34, married Leonard Davis, age 31. Her only child was born 28 Aug 1869, Also in 1872 her Father deeded her Land using her married name, Sarah Davis.  

Sarah Ann reported her age  in the 1860 Census to be 26 after reporting that she was 24 in the 1850 Census. This author believed a birth year of 1826 is the most probable date without any supporting documents. These two Censuses are the only documents we have of her age. However, as an added note, her parents had Sarah and three other children before the birth of Calvin (their fifth child) on 22 February 1832. Five children between 1826 and 1832 is possible and probable.    

Leonard Davis and Sarah Ann Brock had the following child:

  i. Mariah Tabitha "Massie" Davis, born 28 Aug 1869, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John Frazier Teal, abt 1886, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 7 May 1938, Sikos, Scotland County, North Carolina.

Sarah Ann (Brock) Davis died after 1880 at the age of 54 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 

After the death of Sarah Ann Brock Davis, Leonard married Martha E. Preslar, daughter of Levi Preslar and Lydia Diggs. In the 1900 Census for Chesterfield County, Leonard and Martha reported that they had been married 16 years with 2 children, both living.  In the 1910 Census, Leonard Davis reported that this was his second marriage, his wife's first. They had been married 23 years.

Based in this report we can say that Sarah Ann (Brock) Davis died after the 1880 Census was enumerated and before the marriage of Leonard Davis and Martha Presley in 1884 or 1887. No obituary, death notice or tombstone has been found for Sarah Ann (Brock) Davis.  

Leonard had two children with his marriage to Martha Preslar and was last found in the 1910 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. No obituary, death notice, death certificate or tombstone has been found for Leonard Davis.   

Sarah Ann (Brock) Davis is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Brock-Free Marriage Held at Myrtle Beach Army Airfield

Miss Nettie Francis Brock, daughter of James Caswell “Toby” Brock and Martha Elizabeth Brock and Maj. Richard M. Free were united in Holy Matrimony at the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield Base Chapel on 9 February 1946.

Myrtle Beach Army Airfield, Myrtle Beach-- The marriage of Lt. Nettie Frances Brock of Chesterfield, too Maj. Richard M. Free of Bethlehem, PA.  took place at 6:45 p.m.  Saturday, February 9, in the Base Chapel, Myrtle Beach Army Airfield, Myrtle Beach with the Rev. J. A. Faile officiating, .Albert Grant, organist, Myrtle Beach and Lt. James Ross, Myrtle Beach Army Airfield rendered the wedding music. Mrs. Carl Willey of Myrtle Beach was the bride’s matron-of-honor and only attendant.
Maj. Carl Willey of Myrtle Beach was the bridegroom’s best man. Serving as ushers were Capt. Harris Woodbourne and Capt. Robert Walton, both attached to the Base Hospital
The bride was given in marriage by Col. R. O. Harrell, Jr., Base Commander MBAAF, Myrtle Beach. She wore an aquamarine suit with a brown accessories and a shoulder corsage of white orchids. Mrs. James C. Brock of Chesterfield, South Carolina, mother of the bride, was dressed in navy blue with a corsage of pink roses.
The ceremony was followed by an informal reception at the Nurses Quarters, Base hospital, MBAAF, where the wedding cake was cut by the bride and bridegroom.
Major and Mrs. Free left later for a wedding trip to Sarasota, Florida after which they will reside at Myrtle Beach.
Mrs. Free, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Brock of Chesterfield was graduated from Zoar high school, Chesterfield, in 1936.  She completed South Carolina Baptist Training school in 1941. On 1 November 1942, Mrs. Free entered active  duty as an Army nurse at Stark General Hospital, Charleston. and was later transferred to MBAAF. She is at present on terminal leave.
Major Free, son of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Free of 2824 Gallatin Rd., Nashville, TN entered active duty 10 January 1941. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1928 and completed Hahnemann Medical College in 1932. He has served at various stations within the United States and European theater of operation. He is presently assigned as Base Surgeon at the Base Hospital, MBAAF.

Nettie served as a Nurse in World War II and married an Army flight Surgeon. Her husband served as Chief, psychiatry and neurology services in St. Louis, Missouri; Loganport, Indiana; VA Hospital, Coatsville, Pa and VA Mental Hygiene, Philadelphia.

In their latter years they moved to Pinellas County, Florida where Dr. Free was director of the Pinellas County Child Guidance Clinic. Dr. Richard M. Free died on 8 April 1981 at age of 79. His wife, Nettie Frances Brock, lived to age 99, passing away on 23 January 2019 in Tallahassee, Florida. Surviving are two daughters and one son.

The Marriages of Irena Catherine Hancock (1822-1903)

Irena Catherine Hancock, parents unknown, was borne about 1822 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. In February 1840, Irena Catherine Hancock and Mark S. Rivers were married in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Mark S. Rivers, born abt 1808 was a son of Mark Rivers and Annie Parker.  Shortly after his marriage, Mark along with his sister Amelia “Milly Rivers and her husband Moses Holifield and Elizabeth Rivers and her husband John Dryman migrated from Chesterfield to Rankin County, Mississippi. Later their brother Luke Rivers and his wife Salena Johns also left Chesterfield and joined their siblings in Mississippi.   

At some point between 1842 and 1850, something tragically happen  John Dryman and  Elizabeth Rivers, his wife, leaving their 5 children's as orphans.  Jasper Newton Dryman, the youngest, born 9 Feb 1842 became a ward of Mark and Catherine Rivers. He remained in their household until his marriage to Louisa Caroline Donald on 17 December 1860.

During that time, Mark and Catherine went through a divorce which was granted. Although nether of them abided by the terms and continuing to live together as husband and wife. Mark S. Rivers died before September 1879 in Choctaw County, Alabama.

After the death of her husband, Mark Rivers, Irena Catherine (Hancock) Rivers married George S. Fagan, a Widow, on 8 September, 1879. George was 72; Catherine was 57 years of age. At this time Catherine sold the 80 Acres that she and Mark had in Choctaw County, Alabama to her nephew Jasper N. Dryman.

Dryman the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged I do Grant bargain sell and convey to the J. N. Dryman the Following described real estate to wit: the West half of the Northwest quarter of fractional section twenty two Township ten north of range five West containing Eighty acres more or less. George S. Fagan died between 1880 and 1900. Catharine Fagan can be found in the household of her Nephew Jasper Newton Dryman and wife Louisa in the 1900 Census for Robertson County, Texas. Irena Catherine (Hancock)(Rivers) Fagan died about 1903.
