Brock-Free Marriage Held at Myrtle Beach Army Airfield

Miss Nettie Francis Brock, daughter of James Caswell “Toby” Brock and Martha Elizabeth Brock and Maj. Richard M. Free were united in Holy Matrimony at the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield Base Chapel on 9 February 1946.

Brock-Free Wedding Held

Myrtle Beach Army Airfield, Myrtle Beach-- The marriage of Lt. Nettie Frances Brock of Chesterfield, too Maj. Richard M. Free of Bethlehem, PA.  took place at 6:45 p.m.  Saturday, February 9, in the Base Chapel, Myrtle Beach Army Airfield, Myrtle Beach with the Rev. J. A. Faile officiating, .Albert Grant, organist, Myrtle Beach and Lt. James Ross, Myrtle Beach Army Airfield rendered the wedding music. Mrs. Carl Willey of Myrtle Beach was the bride’s matron-of-honor and only attendant.
Maj. Carl Willey of Myrtle Beach was the bridegroom’s best man. Serving as ushers were Capt. Harris Woodbourne and Capt. Robert Walton, both attached to the Base Hospital
The bride was given in marriage by Col. R. O. Harrell, Jr., Base Commander MBAAF, Myrtle Beach. She wore an aquamarine suit with a brown accessories and a shoulder corsage of white orchids. Mrs. James C. Brock of Chesterfield, South Carolina, mother of the bride, was dressed in navy blue with a corsage of pink roses.
The ceremony was followed by an informal reception at the Nurses Quarters, Base hospital, MBAAF, where the wedding cake was cut by the bride and bridegroom.
Major and Mrs. Free left later for a wedding trip to Sarasota, Florida after which they will reside at Myrtle Beach.
Mrs. Free, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Brock of Chesterfield was graduated from Zoar high school, Chesterfield, in 1936.  She completed South Carolina Baptist Training school in 1941. On 1 November 1942, Mrs. Free entered active  duty as an Army nurse at Stark General Hospital, Charleston. and was later transferred to MBAAF. She is at present on terminal leave.
Major Free, son of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Free of 2824 Gallatin Rd., Nashville, TN entered active duty 10 January 1941. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1928 and completed Hahnemann Medical College in 1932. He has served at various stations within the United States and European theater of operation. He is presently assigned as Base Surgeon at the Base Hospital, MBAAF.

Nettie served as a Nurse in World War II and married an Army flight Surgeon. Her husband served as Chief, psychiatry and neurology services in St. Louis, Missouri; Loganport, Indiana; VA Hospital, Coatsville, Pa and VA Mental Hygiene, Philadelphia.

In their latter years they moved to Pinellas County, Florida where Dr. Free was director of the Pinellas County Child Guidance Clinic. Dr. Richard M. Free died on 8 April 1981 at age of 79. His wife, Nettie Frances Brock, lived to age 99, passing away on 23 January 2019 in Tallahassee, Florida. Surviving are two daughters and one son.
