The Marriage of Charles Riley Brock, Jr. and Helen Pauline McDaniel

Charles Riley Brock, Jr. was born 16 November 1927 in McFarlan Anson County, North Carolina. He was the second born son and 3rd born child of Charles Riley Brock, Sr. and Henrietta Florence Pate.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr. was married at least 3 times.

On 9 May 1954, Charlie Riley Brock, Jr,. and Helen Pauline McDaniel of Chester County, South Carolina were married by Hattie Y. Harden a Notary Public for South Carolina. The marriage took place in Chester, South Carolina.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr. served in the United States Air Force, There is information published on-line that cousin Charles was a Lt. Colonel and POW during the Vietnam War. I have found no information to substantiate this Claim and his Military supplied Tombstone shows that he was an enlisted man, not an officer, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. The National Archives Archival database show that Charles Riley Brock, Jr. enlisted into the US Army Air Corps on 9 February 1946. The Air Force did not exist in 1946. Its creation took place on 18 September 1947. Charles Riley Brock, Jr. served in Korea with the United States Air Force with the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSgt.). The Department of Veterans Affairs Death File show that Charles Riley Brock enlisted twice serving for 4 1/2 years AFTER WWII and serving for 9 years during and after the Korean War. Enlistment Date: 15 Nov 1945 Discharge Date: 12 May 1950 | Enlistment Date 1: 14 Oct 1952 Discharge Date 1: 14 Dec 1961.

Charles and Helen had four children. Their first born, a son, died as an infant on the day of his birth. Charles was age 26 when he married Pauline in 1954. Its possible he was previously married but no proof has been found.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr.  died on 3 July 1995 in Rowan County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was married to Yvonne Waters. When and where Charles Riley and Helen Pauline McDaniel were divorced is not known. What is known is that Helen Pauline McDaniel died 18 September 2022.

I show Charles Riley Brock, Jr. 3rd wife  to be Margie West. I don’t know in what order he married Margie, when or where.

The Death of Rilah Smith

 

After 40 plus years of genealogical research I astonished at the plethora of false, misleading and inaccurate information/data that can be found on the internet.

Take for instance the death of Rilah Smith. There is no known specific date for the death of Rilah Smith. Yet, there are specific dates on-line and it doesn’t take much research to realize that the date is false and the person posting it doesn’t have a clue. There is also specific date of Birth online but they too are creations of someone imagination.  

Rilah Smith is listed in the 1810, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Riley was borne about 1788. The 1850 and 1860 Census confirmed this birth year.

Birth Year (1788) based on reported age of 62 in the 1850 Chesterfield County Census.

Birth Year based (1789) on reported age of 71 in the 1860 Chesterfield County Census.

We also find that on 15 March 1817 Rilah Smith was baptized in Deep Creek Baptist Church and he was church clerk from 1817 until 1859. The Deep Creek Baptist Church records where he was a member shows he died in 1864. He died without a will and his property was appraised June 30, 1864 and recorded July 30, 1866. This FACT, that he died before 30 June 1864 can be found in Chesterfield County, SC Probate Folder #13.

So, what is the source of the specific date of 10 August 1864, recorded on his Find A Grave Memorial and in the majority of over 300 trees on Ancestry?

What is the source of the specific birth date of 26 Aug 1788 recorded in the same documents?

Rilah Smith was borne about 1788 and died before 30 June 1864. He was married and the Father of six children; 3 daughters and 3 sons.

Based on the age of his first known child he was married about 1809. His known first borne was Jerusha Ann Smith, born about 1810. She married John M. Sellers and after his tragic death, the Rev. Joel Gulledge.

A Chesterfield County Land Deed --The Heirs of R. Smith, dec'd to Elisha B. Smith Deed; Deed Book 2, Page 97-99 names these six children.

Rilah Smith is said to have married Timmey Spencer. No known source document containing even the first name of his wife has been found. The 1830 Census shows two females in the household; one age 5-9 and another female, age 10-14. This seems to indicate that his wife died before 1830.  

Again, what is the source of the name of his wife and her death date of 16 AUG. 1882?

Capt. Alfred Thomas Davis, Former Staunton Educator Dies

 “Former Staunton Educator Dies

“COLUMBIA, S. C. (AP) -- Alfred Thomas Davis, 58, of Abbeville, a former instructor at Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Va., died at a Columbia hospital early today.”

“TWO ESTATES ESTIMATED AT ABOUT $35,000

Capt. Davis died Jan. 4 in the Columbia hospital, Columbia, S. C. Dated Nov. 29, 1934, the will of Capt. Davis disposes of an estate valued at $25,000, all personalty<sic>. Sole beneficiaries are the widow, Mrs. Kate Pettigrew Davis, and a fourteen-year-old son, Thomas Pettigrew Davis.”

Alfred Thomas Davis, was born 1 March 1876, a son of David Richard Davis and his wife Mary Cornelia McNair.  I have 3 birth dates for Alfred Thomas including 1 April 1882; but, I believe he was born 1 April 1876 as he was age 4 in the 1880 Census and he states that 1 April 1876 is his birth date on his World War I draft registration. Alfred spent his youth in Chesterfield County, SC; but, by World War 1 in 1918,  Alfred gave his address as Washington, District of Columbia and his occupation as a Teacher. 

About 1926, Alfred Thomas Davis married Kate M. Pettigrew. I haven’t found a marriage licensee or even an announcement so this date is based on the birth of their only known child, Thomas Pettigrew Davis, borne 18 December 1926 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Alfred Thomas Davis died on 4 Jan 1941 from a ruptured septic ulcer. He is buried in the Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Staunton City, Virginia.  He was survived by his wife, Kate and son, Thomas Pettigerew Davis.

Kate Pettigrew Davis died 6 July 1989. She was buried in the Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Staunton City, Virginia. 

Alfred Thomas Davis is my 2nd Cousin 3X Removed.

It’s Family Time~The William Sellers Family

William Sellers was borne between 1803 and 1809 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
He was the first borne child and son of Samuel Sellers and Alice “Allie” Cook. About 1826-1827, his Father moved the Family to Wilcox County, Alabama. There on 27 January 1827 William married Martha “Patsey” Martin. Their first borne of this marriage, a son William Oscar, arrived shortly thereafter in 1827. There is a possibility that Andrew Sellers, b. 1826, d. 26 February 1864, is also their son.  

William was a farmer and spent his married life in Wilcox County, Alabama.

William and Martha had 14 children.

ii. William Oscar Sellers was born in 1827 in Clarke County, Alabama. He died on 17 Jun 1863 at the age of 36 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia.

Private. Died at Gate City Hospital in Atlanta, June 17, 1863. Named to Confederate Honor Roll (Southern Cross of Honor) for Battle of Murfreesboro.

iii. John R. Sellers, born 1829, Clarke County, Alabama; married Clarinda E. Dodd; died 1867.

          In the name of God, Amen.  I, William Sellers, being sound of mind and conscious of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, do make and declare this instrument of writing to be my Last Will and Testament.
          Item 1st.  First.  It is my wish and desire that all my property, both real and personal, shall, after the debts of my Estate shall have been paid, be given to my beloved wife, Martha Sellers, during her widowhood.

William's son William Oscar Sellers, born 1827, is not mentioned in the WILL above but he is listed in the 1850 Census for the Family. William Oscar Sellers died in the Civil War in 1863. 

Martha “Patsey” Martin Sellers passed away after the 1880 Census was enumerated in June 1880. No exact date has been found for her death.

Proof Margaret Sellers Died After 1 April 1908

Margaret Sellers was borne 1834, Clarke County, Alabama, a daughter of William Sellers and Martha Martin. She was a granddaughter of Samuel Sellers and Alice Cook and Great granddaughter of Hardy Sellers, Sr.  

She was twice married; her first husband having been killed in the Civil War.  She first married Joshua Herrin on 19 December 1848 in Clarke County, Alabama. After his death, Margaret married Dempsey P. Pace on 20 December 1865.

Margaret and Joshua had three children; with Dempsey she had one child, a daughter, Sophia Pace. 

The exact death date of Margaret (Sellers) Pace is unknown but it is known that she was alive on 1 April 1908 by her signature on this pension receipt.

Its Family Time~What Happen to Benjamin Brock?

Benjamin Brock was born about 1834, a son of Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance (maiden name unknown).

Benjamin married Jane Freeman, daughter of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis, about 1854. This marriage year is based on the birth of their known first born child, James Brock in 1855.

Benjamin at age 16 is enumerated with his parents Benjamin and Temperance in the 1850 Census for Chesterfield County.

Ben Brock and Jane (Freeman) Brock had three known children:

i. James Brock was born about 1855 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 8 Sep 1856 at the age of 1 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. DEATH-BURIAL: September 8, 1856, at the residents of the Parents in Cheraw, & in the Yard at St. David's Church, James [BROCK], infant son of Benjamin & Jane BROCK, aged 1 year. "St. David's Parish, South Carolina Minutes of the Vestry 1768-1832, Parish Register 1819-1924" by Brent H. Holcomb, 1991. Page 120.

ii.   Jane Brock was born in 1856 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 

iii.   Temperance A. "Tempy" Brock, born 10 Aug 1858, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Samuel Merkerson Parr, abt 1873; died 20 Nov 1918, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.

No other record of Benjamin has been found with one possible exception. A Ben Brock was involved in a murder, in Anson County, NC, in February 1860.

DARLINGTON FLAG SUMMER 2003 TOWN COUNTY AND STATE NEWS- MURDER - On Sunday morning last, the body of a free colored man, named Michael Knight, was found near Sandy Plains Church, in this county, under circumstances that lead to believe that he had been foully dealt with. He was entirely nude, excepting socks upon his feet and his body was horribly mangled, having been badly beaten with a stick and his neck dislocated. Coroner A. Niven held an inquest on Monday before whom evidence was brought to light pointing to two white men as the perpetrators of the deed. The evidence however is wholly circumstantial. We suppress the names of the accused for the present understanding warrants are in the hands of the proper officers for their arrest. So far as we understand there are no extenuating circumstances for the perpetration of this horrible deed...

TOWN COUNTY AND STATE NEWS- THE MURDERS OF KNIGHT- So far as can we learn, the murders of Knight, are still at large. The probability is they have left the State. The two men charged with the crime, Robert Lewis and Ben Brock, are somewhat noted characters. The former it will be recollected was tried in Chesterfield District, South Carolina, last summer for homicide - it was said for causing the death of a man in Cheraw by striking him on the head with a bottle and the latter it is understood is a refugee from the State of Mississippi for causing or very near causing the death of a man by cutting him with a knife. It is presumed if the parties have left the State, the State authorities will take early and energetic measures to have them arrested and brought to justice. The majesty of the laws must be maintained and their strong arm should be felt no matter where the perpetrator of crime should seek to hide himself. We understand that parties in South Carolina say that the offer of sufficient reward they will produce one or both of the parties. As stated above, no record, after this newspaper article (Feb. 1860) has been found for Benjamin Brock. No record of Jane (Freeman) Brock has been found after July 1881 except She (Jane) and her daughter Tempie Parr are mentioned in a "Bill of Complaint" brought against the estate of her Father, Jesse Freeman. 

"granddaughter named Temple Parr, the wife of Samuel Parr who is a child of a daughter of testor named Jane  which said daughter of testator had been intermarried with one Benjamin Brock and predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman..."

Was Ben Brock convicted and sent to prison?

Did he leaves the Carolinas for parts unknown?

Did he change his name?

Jane (Freeman) Brock died sometime before July 1881 and most likely before 1880. She cannot be found in the 1880 Census and she was not named in her Father's Will or the Bill of Complaint whereas her only living child, Tempie Parr was named. The WILL did sated that she (Jane) predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman.

Benjamin Brock is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

Jane (Freeman) Brock is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Death of Rachel (Phillips) Sellers

Death of Mrs. Rachel Sellers

Mrs. Rachel Sellers, widow of the late Joel Sellers, died a few days ago at her home in Gulledge township. Mrs. Sellers was a most estimable woman and had many friends who mourn her passing.

Rachel (Phillips) Sellers was born 15 October 1835, a daughter of Reuben Phillips and his wife Hannah [LNU]. Rachel married Joel Sellers, son of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and Mary E. 'Polly' Gulledge. about 1865. No known children were borne of this marriage. 

Joel Sellers died 6 January 1912; his wife Rachel died 24 January 1918. Rachel's NC Death Certificate says she was buried in the Family Burying Ground, Anson County, North Carolina. No tombstone has been found for this couple.

Rachel (Phillips) Sellers was the wife of my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Death of Jacob Wilson C. Sides

 Jacob Wilson C. Sides was born  4 April 1925 , a son of  Daniel Sides and Esther Dry. He was the oldest of twelve children born of this couple.

Jacob married Emily C. Lewis about 1858. An exhaustive search failed to turn up a marriage licensee for this couple. This marriage year is based on the birth of their known first born Child, a daughter, in December 1859.

Like his parent Jacob and his wife Emily had a large family of 9 children.

The children of Jacob and Emily are:

i. Laura Jane Sides was born on 30 Dec 1859 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 20 May 1951 at the age of 91 in Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

ii. Sarah "Sallie" Sides was born on 15 May 1862 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 28 Apr 1947 at the age of 84 in Loray, Iredell, North Carolina,

iii. Flora A. Sides was born on 26 Nov 1864 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 6 Oct 1927 at the age of 62 in Harmony, Iredell, North Carolina.

iv. John L. Sides was born on 30 Mar 1867 in Iredell County, North Carolina; He died on 30 Nov 1916 at the age of 49 in Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

v. Daniel Wellington Sides was born on 11 Jul 1869 in North Carolina. He died on 5 May 1936 at the age of 66 in Iredell County, North Carolina.

vi. Minnie Ethel Sides was born on 25 Sep 1871 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 14 Feb 1943 at the age of 71 in Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

vii. Charles Edgar Sides, born 25 Feb 1874, Loray, Iredell, North Carolina, United States; died 2 Apr 1955, Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina, United States.

viii. Otie Clifford Sides was born on 18 Feb 1877 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He died on 14 Nov 1877 at the age of 0 in Iredell County, North Carolina.

ix. Arthur Leon Sides was born on 24 Mar 1879 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He died on 17 Jan 1964 at the age of 84 in Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

 Emily (Lewis) Sides died on 1 February 1885 in Iredell County, North Carolina. Jacob Wilson C. Sides died on 2 January 1906 in Iredell County, North Carolina. His obituary appeared in the Statesville Record And Landmark,  Statesville, North Carolina, 05 Jan 1906, Page 3, column 4.

Mr. Jacob Sides, whose critical illness was mentioned in the last issue if The LANDMARK, died early Tuesday morning and the remains were interred at Concord church Wednesday morning, Mr. Sides was 81 years old and eight children-four sons and four daughters—survive. His wife died about 20 years ago. Deceased was a brother of Messrs. Noah, J. M. and A. A. Sides of Concord township.
