It’s Family Time~The John B. Rivers Family

 John B. Rivers is a recurring name in early Rivers families. Today's post is about John B. Rivers, born about 1812 in Chesterfield County South Carolina.

John B. Rivers was the son of William Rivers and Elizabeth “Betsy” Rivers. He was a farmer.

John B. Rivers married Eliza Rivers about 1832. Eliza Rivers was a daughter of Frederick F. Rivers, Jr. and Sarah “Siddie” Boatwright. They raised a large family of 11 known children. They had eight (8) sons. Five of the eight sons died in the Civil War.

The following sons died in the Civil War.

John B. Rivers died unexpectedly in June 1859 of Typhoid fever leaving his wife and eleven children's ranging in ago from two to twenty eight. John B. Rivers death is recorded in the Mark Rivers Family Bible and the 1860 Mortality Schedule, page 7.

The death of Eliza Rivers, the surviving spouse, is not as clear as the death of her husband John B. Rivers. We know that she died sometime after 1870 leaving her younger children as orphans. A land deed ibn Chesterfield County (DB 5 , page 798 From Thomas J. Rivers   to Frederick Rivers Alfred Rivers, D. W. Rivers Deed [William Rivers (Killed in War) (Written in)] has this to say:

Thomas J. Rivers to Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers, D. W. Rivers Deed
The State of Texas}
Grayson County}
Know all men by these presents, that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County of Chesterfield in the State of South Carolina

Thomas J Rivers is the son of William Rivers (Killed in CIVIL WAR) who was the son of John B. Rivers and Eliza Rivers.  So Thomas J. Rivers is the Grandson of Eliza Rivers as stated in the land deed. But, here’s the conundrum!

Thomas J. Rivers paternal Grandparents were John B. Rivers and Eliza Rivers

Thomas J. Rivers maternal Grandparents were Thomas J. Graves and Eliza “Mollie” Rivers.

So, which Grandmother is he referring too when he says: that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County…

After much research we know that on 2 February 1880 when Land Deed 5, page 798 was executed that Thomas J. Rivers was referring to his paternal Grandmother Eliza. His maternal Grandmother Eliza did not pass away until 29 October 1898 (see Find A Grave Memorial#146202521).

We also know from Land Deed 3, page 500 that Eliza Rivers, widow of John B. Rivers, was alive on the 25th day of January  1871.

                                Know all men by these present that we Eliza Rivers, Frederick Rivers, Doc Rivers, Alfred Rivers and Nancy Rivers of the County of Chesterfield…

Eliza (Rivers) Rivers died after 25 January 1871 (DB 3:500 and before 2 February 1880 (DB 5:789).

No tombstone's have been found for either parents.

John B. Rivers is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

UPDATE: 22 Oct.2022

Chesterfield County, SC DEED BOOK 5, Page 171 Shows Eliza Rivers alive and signing this Land Deed on 29 January 1877. Thus, Eliza (Rivers) Rivers died after 29 January 1877 (DB 5:171) and before 2 February 1880 (DB 5:789).
