Military Tuesday~Maj. William Thomas Brock

 

William Thomas Brock, born 3 Sept. 1877, a son of Peter Haley Brock and Mary Ellen Liles. He was the 4th of eleven children born of this Union.

 He received his early education in the Cheraw  schools and attended Clemson college. At Clemson he was a college football star, and captain of the Team. It was here that he found his calling and excelled in the military department. Returning home to Cheraw, he assisted in organizing the Cheraw Guards and was made First Lieutenant.

On 23 October 1907, William Thomas Brock and Elizabeth Louise Gillespie were united in marriage.

With America entrance into World War I, William Thomas Brock was commissioned a Captain in the army and assigned to the second officer' training camp at Fort Myer, Va. His enviable record in the training of infantrymen resulted in his advancement to the rank of major of infantry.  

At the close of the war he was commissioned into the Regular army and saw service at Camp Jackson, Fort McKinley, the Philippines, Fort Brady, Mich., and Fort Benning, Ga. During this service he was promoted to the rank of major in the Regular army.

Maj. Brock had lived in Fayetteville since his retirement from the army on account of ill health.

Maj. William Thomas Brock died 5 March 1934 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina.
