The Death of John H. Gaddy, Husband of Viny (Phillips) Sellers

Viny Philips, born September 1838 was the daughter of Capt. John Phillips. On 8 March 1860, she married in Anson County, North Carolina Phillip A. Sellers, son of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and his wife Mary E. “Polly” [Last name unproven but many say its Gulldege].

This was marriage was to be short and brief. Phillip A Sellers, like all men his age, entered the Civil War and died of Typhoid Fever on 9 August 1862.

Phillip and Viny had no children and for many years I have wondered what happen to Viny after the death of her husband. I knew from County Land Deeds (Anson County Deed Book 17, pages 435 and 436) that she had remarried. .

I Viny Gaddy Widow of the late P. A. Sellers Dec’d for and in consideration of Two hundred & fifty dollars...

I found that Viny had married a man called John H. Gaddy most likely about 1865. They had one daughter, Martha M. Gaddy born in 1866. John H. Gaddy died in September 1895. The birth year on his tombstone is in error. He was age 8 in 1850 Census and age 19 in 1860 census. He was born in 1841.

Death Comes to Mr. John H. Gaddy Suddenly.
Last Friday morning Mr. John H. Gaddy, whose home is in Gulledge's township, came to Wadesboro on business. He ate his dinner in Mr. J. O. A. Craig's store, leaving the store just before 1 o'clock to replace the dishes in his wagon, in the lot back of the store. A few minutes after this passers by discovered his dead body, apparently leaning on the front of the wagon, with one the other hand in the one on the wagon and ground. Mr. Gaddy was about 55 years old and bad been a sufferer from dropsy of the heart for quite a while. His death has been expected at any time for a year; indeed his wife, it is said, told him when he left home that she never expected to see him again alive. He was a good citizen, and had been a member of the Methodist church for a number of years.

[The Messenger and Intelligencer, Sept. 19, 1895, edition 1; Page 3, Column 3.]

Vina Gaddy, age 61, is listed as a boarder with the Alfred Gaddy Family in the 1900 census.

1900 CENSUS: Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina; Roll: 1181; Enumeration District: 0009; Page: 4B/166B (Stamped); Line#69, Dwelling#54, Family#54; Vina GADDY, Female, age 61, Boarder, born Sept. 1838 in NC; living as a boarder in the Household of Alfred Gaddy and his wife Eliza Gaddy and their 6 children.

No record of their daughter Martha M. Gaddy has been found after the 1880 Census and no record of Viny Gaddy has been found after the 1900 census.
