Luther Ernest Light was born about June 1867, a son of Stephen D. Light and Cybil A. [LNU] of Virginia. In the 1880 Census for District 5, Dyer, Tennessee, Luther E. Light is listed as a son, age 12, born in Tennessee. The family is in the same county in 1870 so Luther E. Light was born in about 1867 in Dyer County, Tennessee.
On 21 April 1895, Luther E. Light, age 27, married Eliza Earnhart, age 22 in Dyer County, Tennessee.
Eliza Earnhart, was borne about 1873 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She was a daughter of William A. Earnhart and Mary A. Nichols. The Earnhart’s had migrated from Rowan County, NC to Bedford County, Tennessee about the year 1817.
Then on 26 December 1895, we find Luther Ernest Light again marrying a young lady named Dora S. Carmack, age 23. Dora Carmack was born to John Wesley Carmack and Penny Curtis Carmack of Dyer County, Tennessee.
In 1900, we find Ernest Light, age 32, listed as a son in the household of his Mother, Addie Light. His occupation is listed as farmer and he (Ernest) is listed as a Widow.
In 5 short years 1895 to 1900, Luther Ernest Light has married twice and became a widow:
- Wife #1 – Eliza Earnhart, md. 21 April 1895
- Wife #2 – Dora S. Carmack, md. 26 December 1895
- 5 June 1900, Ernest Light is a Widow.
I do not know what happen in these marriages but I do know that I haven’t been able to find a single document on either woman after their marriage to Luther Ernest Light.
No death notice, no re-marriage, no tombstone, no mention, nothing after 26 December 1895 on the two wives. But there is plenty on Luther Ernest Light.
1900, Ernest Light is with his mother in the 1900 Census for Dyer County, Tennessee. Widowed, Farmer.
12 May 1909 – Luther E. Light is appointed Postmaster, for Grenville, Union, New Mexico. Single
1910 Census: L C Lizht, age 43, can be found in Veda, Union, New Mexico. He’s Retail Merchant. Single
1920 Census: Luther E. Light, age 52 can be found Grenville, Union, New Mexico in the household of his Brother Newton C. Light and his wife Maude. Luther is Single, his Occupation: Grocery,
1930 Census: Luther E. Light, age 71 can be found Grenville, Union, New Mexico. Widowed, No occupation listed.
1935/1940 Census: Luther E. Light, age 71 can be found Grenville, Union, New Mexico. Widowed, No occupation listed.
The 1940 Census shows that Luther had completed the 7th grade of Elementary school.
Luther Ernest Light, age 83, died 12 November 1949 at the home of his niece, Mrs. Dan Thorpe of Las Cruces. A stock farmer, he was born in Dyersburg, Tenn., and came to Las Cruces to make his "home three years ago.
If you have any info on the deaths of Eliza Earnhart or Dora S. Carmack I would love to hear from you. Dora had at least one brother and one sister.
