52 Cousins~Edward Dease

Edward Dease born 12 March 1812 in Alabama Territory was the 3rd born child of John Burk Dease and Bridget Gillard, widow of William Burke. 

His father John Burk left Anson County and arrived in Washington County, Mississippi Territory in the year 1800. As a land Surveyor he most likely met the widow Burke while surveying the extensive lands inherited from her deceased husband William Burke shortly before 16 September 1803. 

John Burk and the Widow Burke were married in 1805 after initiation of a marriage Contract to protect her inherited property.  

Edward as a young lad assisted his father. He was Twice married. His first wife was Margaret Tisdale whom he married about 1835 in Jasper, Mississippi. Margaret (Tisdale) Dease died 24 September 1851.

 Edward Deese and Margaret Tisdale had the following children:

i. Bridget C. Deese, born 25 Oct 1838; married E. G. Cooper, abt 1857; married John Davis Morgan, 1900; died 18 Sep 1922.

ii. Margaret C. Deese, born abt 1839; married Col. John N. Ryan, 1859; died 26 Dec 1922, Ouachita, Louisiana.

iii. Mary Anne Deese was born about 1841.

iv. James P. Deese was born about 1844, Jasper County, Mississippi. 

v. Oliver S. Deese was born about 1846, Jasper County, Mississippi. 

vi. Charles P. Deese was born about 1848.

vii. Edward Jackson "Jack" Deese, born May 1851, Covington County, Mississippi; married Mary Susan Terry; died 1905, Collins, Covington, Mississippi.

He next met and married a young lady by the name of Lucinda Stephens.

They were married on 8 November 1853 in Wilcox County, Alabama.  

Edward and Lucinda were only married 7 short years until his untimely death on 30 June 1860.

Edward Deese and Lucinda Stephens had the following children:

i. Sarah Elizabeth Deese was born (date unknown).

ii. Gilbert J. "Gillie" Deese was born about 1856. He lived in Mobile, Mobile, Alabama in 1888. He died in 1898 at the age of 42 in Mexico.  

iii. Thomas H. Deese, born 7 Sep 1856; married Sarah Matilda O'Flinn; died 9 Jul 1907.

iv. Martha Louise Deese was born about 1860. She died on 9 Sep 1886 at the age of 26. 

 Edward wrote his Last Will on 22 June 1860, 8 days before his death.  


The WILL

The last Will and testament of me Edward Dease of Jasper County, State of Mississippi.

          I Edward Dease being in Sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding but feeble in body knowing the certainty of death and the uncertainty of life do make publish and ordain this as and for my last Will and Testament revoking all others by me previously made.

Item. It is my will that the following named negroes- Amy, Aaron, Bob, and Wiley that belong to and came by (pg 30) my first wife be equally divided among and between my children by my first wife to wit: Bridget Cooper, Margaret C. Bryan, Mary Ann Dease, James P. Dease, Oliver Dease and Charley P. Dease and Edward J. Dease share and share alike.

It is my will that all the balance of my estate real and personal of every kind and description be equally divided between my beloved wife Lucinda and my children share and share alike.

It is my will and desired that my beloved wife Lucinda Dease be Guardian of the persons and estates of my children Sarah Elizabeth, Gillie J., Thomas H. and Martha L. that she manage their share of my estate as she may deem best keeping it together till they arrive at the age of twenty one years when each one will obtain his or her share without giving bond for the same.

I appoint James J. Shannon Executor of this Will.

Given under my hand and seal this 22nd June 1860.

Renunciation of Bequest of E. Deese Will

By Mrs. L. S. Dease the Widow &c.

 

To The Honorable S. W. Jones Judge of the Probate Court of Jasper County State of Mississippi-

I Lucinda Dease Widow of Edward Dease late of said County deceased do hereby renounce and quit all claim to any bequest or devise made tome by the last will and testament of my husband exhibited and proved according to law, and I elect to take in lien thereof my dower in legal share of the estate of my said husband.
