Surname Saturday~Widener-Holley


Indiana “India” Widener, was born 10 June 1875 to Benjamin Franklin Widener and Clarissa Heath. She had three siblings, two sisters and a brother. Her mother is listed as a Widow in the 1880 Census for Jefferson County, Georgia. Evidence indicates that Benjamin Widener remarried in 1895 and died in 1927.  

1880 CENSUS: Sleepy Hollow, Aiken County, South Carolina; Roll: 1218; Family History Film: 1255218; Enumeration District: 018, Page: 276B/296 (stamped); Line 28, Dwelling 345, Family 352; Clarisy WIDNER, Female, age 40, born in SC; Hattie WIDNER, Daughter, age 13, born in SC; Tim [Tom] WIDNER, Son, age 9, born in SC; India WIDNER, Daughter, age 6, born in SC and Eva WIDNER, Daughter, age 2, born in SC.

About 1891, India at age 16 married a fellow with the surname Holley. Secondary information has him listed as Lawrence Holley. No document have been found stating who her husband was or, when he was born or when and where he died. Secondary information states that he died in 1901.  
By 1910, Lawrence and India have four children; a son and three daughters as shown in the below census. India is listed as a Widow.

In 1920, the family can still be found in Jefferson County, Georgia but son William and daughter Eula are no longer in the household. No record of William had been found; but, Eula Holley met and married Daniel Gulledge Graves, of Chesterfield County, S. C. Based on the birth of their first born, Mary Dell Graves on 4 November 1912, they must have married in 1911 or early 1912.

On 14 November 1920, Nettie Holley married John Cleveland Rollins in Jefferson County, Georgia. India Widener Holley was living with her daughter Nettie and son-in-law John Cleveland Rollins when the census were enumerated in 1930. All three had moved from Jefferson to the east into Burke County, Georgia.

1940 finds India still living in Burke County but now she is living with her youngest daughter Virginia “Jennie” and son-in-law Ernest Rollins. She is now 65 years old although the census shows her as 67.

India Widener Holley died 24 July 1947 in Aiken, Aiken County, South Carolina. She is buried in the Talatha Baptist Church Cemetery.
