I haven’t researched Hugh Moore Smith so I only have a small amount of data to provide about him. He's in my database because of his marriage unto my Sellers line.

Hugh Moore Smith was born about 1829n to Neill Smith. He was twice married; his first wife was Sarah A. Sellers. They had 1 child J. Frank Smith. Sarah died in December 1859.

Hugh next married Mary Carolina Copeland in 1870-1871. He’ is listed as single in the 1870 Census and after marriage his first born, a daughter, arrived on 29 December 1871.
Hugh and Mary would have three daughters and two sons.

I have no data on Mary Caroline Copeland but have heard that she married a ‘Moore” after the death of Hugh Smith.

Hugh Moore Smith wrote his will on 2 November 1888 and passed away on  August. 14, 1889 according to his tombstone. Hugh is buried in the Smith Family Cemetery, Ruby, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Census Sunday~Jesse Freeman, b. 1838

Jesse Freeman, b. 1838, son of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis Freeman appears by name in two censuses; the 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. You can see him listed below as Jesse, age 20 in his parents household. 1 2
1860-Jessie Freeman-Chesterfield
1860 Chesterfeild, Freeman

Also in the household is 2 year old Jane Brock, a granddaughter, whose parents are Jane Freeman and Benjamin Brock.3

This census was enumerated in August 1860 and we know from history that the Civil war started just a few months later in January 1861.

Sometime between August of 1860 and early 1862 Jesse married a young lady name Ann (LNU, Last name unknown ) and was enlisted on Jan 8, 1862 by Capt. B. T. Davis for 3 years of service in the Civil War. 4

Minnie Sanders Rivers in a “Family History Booklet” completed in the late 1920 states that:

MILITARY: CSA - Co. E, 21st. Regiment Infantry. Killed in action at Petersburg, Virginia in June 1864. Source of Info.: Rivers Family History by Minnie Sanders Rivers, pg. 12.

I did an extensive search to confirmed this death date and was unsuccessful with the Nation Park Service (NPS)  database, Fold3 and Johnson Hagood’s “Memoirs if the War of Secession. Not to be outdone I finally pulled out my History of the 21st SC Volunteers, by John V. Rigdon and found this: 5 6 7 8

Jesse Freeman Killed

So Jesse Freeman died in the Civil War and never came home. After the War, his widow Ann married Joseph HALL. We know this from the 1880 census and from a “Bill of Complaint” filed at the death of Jesse Freeman, Sr. in July 1881.  Item 2, of Jesse’s will from this complaint reads: 9 10

II. That the said Jessie Freeman left Surviving him as his heirs  at law and Distributees His Widow Mary Freeman and the following children to wit:
William Freeman Louis Freeman Christine Turnage the wife of Robert Turnage, Ann Hall the wife of Joseph Hall Elizabeth Poston the wife of Elisha Poston and your Complainants Mary Ann Wadsworth and Effie Purvis and also and <sic> granddaughter named Temple Parr, the wife of Samuel Parr who is a child of a daughter of testor named Jane  which said daughter of testator had been intermarried with one Benjamin Brock and predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman.

The Widow, Ann, was next found in the 1870 census where we learned that she and Jesse had a son, Jesse Coleman Freeman, b. 1862.11

1870 CENSUS: Cole Hill, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Roll:  M593_1491; Image: 91; Family History Library Film: 552990, Page 283A; Line 3, Dwelling 101, Family 101; Ann FREEMAN, female, age 25, born in SC and J. A. FREEMAN, male, age 8, born in SC.

But, by 1880, Ann has remarried, taking as her 2nd husband Joseph Hall. 12

1880 Census-Joseph Hall

We see that Ann had two sons prior to her marriage to Joseph Hall and that their first born, Barney, was born in 1876 suggesting that Ann LNU Freeman and Joseph Hall were married in 1875.

From this union, Ann and Joseph had five additional children; three sons and two daughters. By 1900, Annie is a widower again living with her son Henry in her household and both using the surname – Freeman.13

1900-Annie Freeman

Ann LNU Freeman Hall died 19 Jun 1925 in Richmond County, NC. After the death of her 2nd husband Joseph Hall, she reverted to using the Freeman surname. Her death certificate shows her father to be Jesse Freeman; this is an error. The surname and parents of Ann, wife of Lewis Freeman, Jr. and Joseph Hall is unknown.14

Note Jesse Freeman, Sr. had a daughter names Ann E. Freeman. Many a researcher has mixed these two individual up. Ann E. Freeman daughter of Jesse Sr. married Elisha Polson according to Jesse Sr. Will and she went by the name Elizabeth Poston.

Annie (LNU) Freeman Hall is buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Marlboro County, South Carolina.15

It’s Family Time~Charles Washington Brock and Sarah Annie Brock Brock

Family Time

Today's Family Time article will spotlight Charles Washington Brock and his wife Sarah Annie Brock.

Charles Washington Brock was the son of James Paul Brock and Catherine Josephine Smith. Known as Charlie, he was born on 2 December 1873  as documented on his World War I draft card.1

Sarah Annie Brock is a sister to my Grandmother Mary Catherine “Mamie” Brock. She was the oldest daughter of Benjamin Franklin Brock and Louise Ellen Sellers Brock; born 14 July 1881.2

Charles Washington and  Sarah Annie were married about 1907.3 This date is based on the birth of their fist child, Edna Mae Brock on 4 October 1908 and the 1910 Census where they stated that they had been married 3 years with two living children. Charles and Sarah Annie had 8 children; 7 daughters and one son, between 1908 and 1921.

Charlie was a lifelong farmer; but his life was cut short at the age of 63 on 12 February 1937 when  he died from Apoplexy (stroke).4

Charles Washington was buried in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.5 Sarah Annie Brock lived another 18 years and 10 months. She was buried at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, South Carolina.6

Charles Washington Brock and Sarah Annie Brock were 2nd cousins once removed. Charles is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed and Sarah Annie is my Grand Aunt.

Tombstone Tuesday~ Andrew J. and Elizabeth R. McBride

First, let me say that the birth dates for both Andrew and his wife Elizabeth are wrong on this tombstone.

Andrew J. McBride b. 1855 was the son of Jerusha Davis and her husband Archie McBride. Andrew is enumerated with his siblings, his mother and grandmother in the 1860 census for Chesterfield County, SC. He is listed as an 8 years old male in the household (see Line 26).

1860 Chesterfield -McBride

Elizabeth R. Boatwright was born about 1856, a daughter of George R. Boatwright and Lauretta Hurst.

Andrew and Elizabeth were married about 1877. They had four children:
  • Mary A. McBride
  • George R. McBride
  • William T. McBride
  • Lugenia ‘Lula’ J. McBride (Lugenia in 1900/1910 Census)
In the 1920 census Andrew is living with his son-in-law Jesse Gwyn Previtt and his daughter Lugenia ‘Lula’ the wife of Jesse. Ancestry really mangled their last name and they were somewhat difficult to find.

1920 CENSUS: Court House, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Roll: T625_1690; Enumeration District: 40; Image: 933; Page: 10B/166 (stamped); Line 88, Dwelling 181, Family 189; Jesse G. PREVITT [Julie S Pawitt], male, age 42, born in SC; Lula PREVITT [Pawitt], Wife, age 36, born in SC and Andrew McBRIDE, Father-in-Law, age 65, born in SC

The family is buried in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Both Andrew and Elizabeth are my 2nd cousins 3 times removed.

Census Sunday~What Happen to Daniel Turnage and his brother, John Turnage

The 1850 Census, page 143 , for Chesterfield County contains a real genealogical mystery:

What happen to Daniel Turnage and his brother, John Turnage?

1850 Census, page 143, Chesterfield County, SC

1850 Census Snippet

This is the only Census in which these two boys appear. In this Census they are enumerated in the household of Vicey Purvis
  • Line 19, Dwelling  685, Family 685
  • Vicy PURVIS, age 64
  • Daniel Turnage, age 12
  • John Turnage, age  11
The John Turnage in Vicy’s household may also be the John Turnage enumerated in Dwelling  684, Family 684, Line 18 with Mourning Turnage, age 42.

Also on this same page just above Mourning Turnage is the Family of Mathew Sellers, age 32 and his wife Sally. (Dwelling  683, Family 683, Line 10

John and Daniel Turnage are,  as stated, enumerated in the Household of Vicy Purvis. An extensive search of records has been made to locate these two boys in Censuses after 1850. That effort has been futile.

About mid-year 1859, Mathew Sellers and Sally moved their family to Choctaw County Alabama. We know that their youngest child was 6 month old in 1860 and was born in SC.

1860 CENSUS: Northern Division, Choctaw County, Alabama; Roll: M653_5; Image: 544; Family History Library Film: 803005, Page: 534(stamped); Line 29, Dwelling 541, Family 515; M. SELLERS, male, age 42, born in SC and S. SELLERS, female [wife], age 37, born in SC; J. [Jerusha]  SELLERS, Female, age 13, born in SC; M. SELLERS, Male, age 9, born in SC; S.[Sarah]  SELLERS, Female, age 11, born in SC; M. SELLERS, Female, age 6, born in SC; M. SELLERS, Male, age 3, born in SC and S. SELLERS, Female, age 6/12, born in SC.

In 1860, their oldest daughter, Zilpha Ann, who has just barely turned 16 is no longer in the household of her parents Mathew and Sally Sellers. However, she is next door married to D. J. PURVIS. Line 37

1860-Mathew Sellers
But, Who is D. J. Purvis? Further research shows that D. J. Purvis is Daniel J. Purvis. After extensive searching no record of Daniel J. Purvis has been found until his appearance in the 1860 Choctaw County, Alabama census.

Is Daniel Turnage and Daniel Purvis the same individual? I think so.
  • Daniel Turnage was born in 1838 (1850 Census)
  • Daniel J. Purvis was born 1837
  • Daniel Turnage disappears after 1850
  • Daniel J. Purvis did not exits prior to 1860.
I think that the Turnage boys took the name of their caregiver, Vicy Purvis. DNA testing is the only way this mystery will be solved.

If you have any information that may contribute to solving this mystery please contact me by posting your comments to this blog post.

Probate Record #496-Petition of I. B. Rivers

On 8 Sept. Ancestry announced a significant and massive release of Probates records for the United States.  The database can be accessed here:

http://search.ancestry.com/search/group/us_willsprobate

From the South Carolina (SC) portion of this database we can access the Probate records for Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

South Carolina, Wills and Probate Records, 1670-1980

http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=9080

From this set of records I pulled this petition of I. B. Rivers for the administration of his Father's estate.   Notice that this probate file (#496) is listed on Ancestry as W. S. Rivers. This is an error.

I. B. Rivers is Isaac Berkley Rivers and his father is William James Rivers.

Probate #496-William James Rivers

Mathew Sellers, Chesterfield to Choctaw County, Alabama

E-mail correspondence from a fellow researcher (Gary P) of Columbia, South Carolina led to some research that identified another migration of families from South Carolina.
Page 534 of the 1860 Choctaw County, Alabama Census shows  Purvis, Sellers, Hurst and Massey families that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Choctaw County, Alabama.
1860 Choctaw County, Alabama
(Clicking on Images will make them larger)

On this page (534) we find Massey, Hurst, Sellers and Purvis families. On Line 27, Dwelling 542, Family 516 is D. J. PERVEY as shown; the family is really Daniel J. Purvis and his wife Zilpha Ann Sellers Purvis.

1860 Choctaw County, Alabama (enlarged)Zilpha Ann Sellers Purvis. was born in Chesterfield county about 1844 to Mathew Sellers and his wife Sallie [LNU].
If you know Sallie’s surname please contact me.

The family is found in Chesterfield County in 1850 and in Choctaw County Alabama in 1860.
1850 Census-Matthew Sellers
1860-Mathew Sellers
You can see Zilpha Ann, age 6 in the 1850 Census in Mathew household and again in 1860, at age 16, as the wife of Daniel J. Purvis.

Also if you study the 1860 census for the household of Mathew Sellers you will find their youngest child, S. Sellers, female. age 6/12. This particular Census was taken on 29 August 1860. This suggests that S. Sellers age 6/12 was born about February 1860.

This in turn suggest that Mathew Sellers packed up his family between February and August of 1860 and moved them to Choctaw County, Alabama.

Mathew’s wife Sally died sometime before Aug 1876. In August 1876, Mathew married Elizabeth M. Christian daughter of Alex Christian.  Mathew Sellers died 1 March 1896 in Choctaw County, Alabama.

The parents of Mathew Sellers, born about 1818 have never been determined. Marie Gulledge Wiggins and James “Jim” Pigg worked extensively on the Sellers line. The Sellers line is also my direct line on the maternal side of my family and as of tonight Mathew’s parents are still unknown. If you have information on this family, please contact me.

Tombstone Tuesday~Miles Hurst

Miles Hurst
b. Apr. 10, 1811
d. Nov. 24, 1895
bu. Hurst Cemetery

30005082_122476917902

The parents of Miles Hurst are unknown to me. Miles married Theatus Thurman, the said daughter of John Thurman and Anne Perkins.

Miles and Theatus marriage date is unknown due to the loss of “public records” during the Civil War for Chesterfield County. However, based on the birth of their first known child, Luke Hurst, in 1831 its most likely they were married about 1829-30. They were not found in the 1830 Census for Chesterfield County.

Miles and Theatus had 11 children; 7 lived to adulthood, 6 daughters and one son.
Theatus died 5 May 1873 and Miles passed away on 24 November 1895. They are buried in the Hurst Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1 2 3
