Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage of Joseph Thurman Hurst and Keturah Bounds, 1903
In the early 1890, several families migrated from Chesterfield County to Arkansas. Among these families were the Hurst, Lisenby, Gainey’s and others. Also in the group was Joseph Thurman Hurst, son of Phillip James Hurst and Mary Ann Gainey.
A few years prior to this migration Joseph Thurman Hurst had married Amanda J. “Mandy” Davis. Mandy was a daughter of Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Caroline Massey. It is not known when Joseph and Mandy left Arkansas but by mid-1900’s they had migrated to Collins County, Texas. Mandy did not survive the trip and presumed to be buried somewhere between Cleveland County, Arkansas and Collins County, Texas.
The 1900 census shows Joseph Thurman all alone without his children; three known children born between 1886 and 1890; two sons and a daughter, of which one son died at birth. Further research finds son Thomas Oscar in the household of James M. Hurst in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory and Mary Eleanor with William J. A. Hurst, Collins County, Texas.
On 8 February 1903, Joseph Oscar Hurst married Keturah Melvina Bounds in Collins County, Texas. 1
The union between Joseph and Keturah produced four additional children; three sons and a daughter.
i. Phillip Carroll Hurst, born 5 Apr 1904, Collin,Texas; married Mary Belle Gibbs; died 21 Feb 1978, Refugio, Texas.
ii. John E. Hurst, born 20 Aug 1905, Collin County, Texas; married Ruby [LNU], abt 1921; died 13 Apr 1954.
iii. Mary Etta Hurst, born 28 Aug 1909, ,Collin,Texas; married John Samford, 29 Nov 1928, Brown Co.,Texas; died 18 Aug 1997, Hondo, Medina, Texas.
iv. Joseph Lee Hurst was born on 15 Mar 1914 in Brown, Texas. He served in the military during World War II. He died 6 July 1965 and is buried in Lovington, New Mexico.

The parents of Aaron Sellers are not known. When James Pigg did his book “Some Descendants of Hardy Sellers, Sr.” no mention was made of an Aaron Sellers born in 1830 and married to Hannah Crawford. 1
Aaron and Hannah was married about 1855 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. They had the following children:
i. Elizabeth C. "Betty" Sellers, born 22 Nov 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Benjamin E. Gainey; died 12 Oct 1925, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 2 3
ii. William D. Sellers was born about 1860 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 4 5
iii. Pamelia J. Sellers was born on 29 Jun 1862 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 10 Nov 1941 at the age of 79. 6 7 8
iv. Joseph Mitchell Sellers, born 14 Aug 1865, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Permelia Stroud, abt 1893, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 27 Jul 1924, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. John W. Sellers was born in Jul 1872 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 9 10
vi. Michael Sellers was born in Sep 1876 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 11 12
There is one clue to the parents of Aaron Sellers. The 1850 census for Chesterfield County shows that his Mother was Abigail, born 1789 and that he had a brother names Josiah Sellers born about 1829. 13
1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; Roll: M432_851; Image: 357, Page: 176A & B (stamped); Line 42, Dwelling 1192, Family 1192; Abigail SELLARS, female, age 61, born in SC; Josiah SELLARS, male, age 21, born in SC and Aaron SELLARS, male, age 19, born in SC.
If this is your lineage or if you have any information about Abigail, her maiden name or her husband I would like to hear from you.

It’s Family Time~Alice Catherine Johns and Joel S. Toler
Sometime between 1850 and 1860 my 2nd Great Grandfather Shadrach Johns moved his family from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Russell County, Alabama.1
While there in September 1869 their oldest daughter Alice Catherine ‘Katie’ Johns met and married a young man by the name of Joel S. Toler. The marriage license below indicates that they were married on 30 September 1869 in Bullock County, Alabama. 2
Joel S. Toler and Alice Catherine ‘Katie’ Johns had the following children:
i. Mary Toler, born 2 Jun 1871, Silver Run, Russell, Alabama; married Jack Jones, abt 1891; married Malcolm Barfield, aft 1900, Marlboro County, South Carolina; died 12 May 1955, McColl, Marlboro County, South Carolina.
ii. William Shadrac Toler, born 5 Apr 1874, Seal Station, Russell, Alabama; married Margaret Alice Linton, 27 Dec 1896, SC; died 19 Jun 1955, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Nothing more is known about Katie and Joel until their two children are found with their Grandfather and Uncle Henry Joseph Johns in the 1880 census for Marlboro County. 3
No additional records have been found for either Joel or Katie after their marriage and the birth of their two children. Nor have I found any record of Katie's Mother Mary Boan Johns, her sister Anna or brother Thomas Johns.
Katie Johns and her husband Joel S. Toler are my Great Grand Aunt and Uncle.

Hezekiah ‘Hugh’ Brock was taken prisoner while his wife and children watched him being taken away from their farm home in Chesterfield, SC. Hugh & Sallie's oldest (Benjamin Franklin), my g-grandfather had just turned 14 and the youngest (Pleasant Elmore wasn't quite 12 months old. Hugh never saw his family again. After being taken prisoner he was transferred to the Confederate Prison at Point Lookout, Maryland. On 12 June 1865, exactly 3 months to the day of his imprisonment Hugh passed away at Point Lookout. Cause of death was listed as inflammation of the lungs which probably translates to pneumonia.
There is a Descendants of Point Lookout, POW Organization, for anyone who may be interested. Many soldiers from Chesterfield were incarcerated at this prison including many of my Sellers relatives. In the late 1990’s before moving back to North Carolina I belonged to this organization and submitted paperwork and documents to have Hezekiah Brock named added to the Confederate Memorial. The Park Director, Pearl Buck, failed to make good on her commitment to me and the PLPOW organization and never added Hezekiah name to a plague on this memorial. I checked when I was there in May 2004. 1
However, as posted on Hezekiah’s FindAGrave Memorial (# 25572002) they did create a list and add his name (“Name is not listed on monument but appears on a list from Baltimore National Cemetery updated May 25, 2006 located at the monument. - FAG#25572002) 2
Hezekiah Brock died at Point Lookout on 12 June 1865. The War that resulted in the loss of his life ended 63 days earlier on 9 April 1865. 3 4
