It’s Family Time~Andrew J. Huneycutt & Mary Ann Kendrick

It's Family Time
Andrew Jackson Huneycutt, age 25 and Mary Ann Kendrick, age 27 were married on 27 June 1878 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Andrew was the son of Tobias A. Huneycutt and his wife Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Crayton. Mary Ann Kendrick was the daughter of Joseph Kendrick.

Though unknown on 27 June 1878, this marriage would be short lived; producing only one child, Joseph Franklin Huneycutt, born 18 March 1879.

In late 1880, Mary Ann wrote her will and left her only possession, a city lot, in Trust to her Beloved Niece, Mary Elizabeth Kendrick.  In a application dated December 1881, the Trustee applied to the Court to take possession of the lot for the niece, Mary Elizabeth Kendrick, stating that Mary Ann Huneycutt was deceased.

The date of this documents shows that Mary Ann Kendrick Huneycutt died between 9 June 1880 (date 1880 census were enumerated) and December 1881 (date of Trustee Letters in Will Book).
Andrew Jackson Huneycutt remarried on 27 February 1884 to Sarah E. Graham. In June, Sarah E. Graham Huneycutt gave birth to a daughter,  Ethel L. born June 1884.

Sarah E. Huneycutt died on 28 September 1919; A. J. Huneycutt was the informant of the death certificate for his wife. (NC Death Certificate #20585). No death date has been found for Andrew Jackson Huneycutt.

DC - SARAH E. HUNEYCUTT

Amanuensis Monday~Sale of James Purvis, Sr. Estate Lands

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is the Sale of James F. Purvis, Sr. Estate Lands

James F. Purvis, Sr., age 76, died about November 1836 in Rankin County, Mississippi. Two of his sons, John and George, were assigned as administrators of the estate. Also, as a party on the deed is another son, Alexander.

This land deed (DB 5, page 209 & 210) shows that Daniel Taylor purchased the 80 acres for a sum of four hundred dollars. No explanation is given for waiting two years after the death of James Sr. to sell the property.

Joseph Purvis, Selling the Farm

Joseph Purvis and Elizabeth Cook were married about 1823. I have not found a marriage record for them and this marriage year is based on the belief that their first born was Caroline or Nancy Jane Purvis born about 1823.

In the 1830 census for Rankin County the Family composition consisted of Joseph (30-39) and his wife Elizabeth (30-39)
  • 1 Male under 5
  • 1 Female under 5
  • 2 Females 5-9
  • 2 Females 10-14 (1816-1820)
By 1840 and a new census the family has increased with the addition of another daughter and three sons.

Joseph was a farmer and had a total of 160 acres with 80 acres in Section 23, Township 4, Range 5 and another 80 acres in Section 26, Township 4, Range 5.

On 15 November 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth sold all their land to John Dunagan of Newton County, Mississippi.  A total of 160 acres more or less.

I’m convinced they took this action because they knew that Joseph was ill and his life expectancy was very short. Failure to sale the land would leave Elizabeth burden with 160 acres of farmland and six or seven children under 15 years of age.

Between 15 November 1841 and May 1842, Joseph Purvis passed away.  This timing is devised based on a statement from the estate of Gilbert Johnston Purvis.

With a household full of very young children Elizabeth Cook Purvis had no choice but to re-marry. We know that she married Richard Odom, son of Isaac Odom and his wife Millie Breland. The date of marriage and location is documented all over the Web as  22 January 1844, Smith County, Mississippi; However, this cannot be confirmed or verified as a correct date and place. [Data said to be sourced from War of 1812 Pension File]

After Richard’s death about 1854; Elizabeth move her family to Rapides Parish, Louisiana.
1860 CENSUS: Rapides Parish, Louisiana; Roll: M653_423; Image: 31; Family History Library Film: 803423; Page 31, Line 36, Dwelling 226, Family 227; Elizabeth ODUM, female, age 60, born in SC and Alexander PURVIS, Son, age 20, born in MS.

She died there sometime before the 1870 census were enumerated. I haven’t identified the under 5 male in the 1830 census but her last three sons, James, Joseph and William Alexander ALL died in the Civil War. I don’t know her death date so I don’t know if she was alive long enough to receive word that her 3 babies were gone.

Elizabeth suffered much grief in her lifetime.

The Land Patent and Deed below shows the sale of the Joseph Purvis land.

It’s Family Time~The Johnston James Purvis Family

In 1915, Mary Virginia Hagerman Watson was inducted into the DAR as a descendant of Gilbert Purvis. She was assigned DAR #115797. She is the only descendant of Gilbert to be successfully inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution based on his participation in the Revolutionary War.  Her lineage is shown in the below snippet from the DAR Lineage Books.

Gilbert Purvis, DAR, REV WAR

In her application she states “Effica Purvis (Wife of Gilbert) grandmother to James P. J. Purvis afterwards lived with her Grandson James & from her Elizabeth R. Purvis learned the particulars of their experiences during the war & her husband being wounded at the battle of Eutaw Springs.”
To summarize the above lineage we have:
  • Mary Virginia Hagerman Watson daughter of Mary Anna Purvis,
  • Mary Anna Purvis daughter of Elizabeth Rose Campbell & James P. J. Purvis
  • James P. J. Purvis son of Johnson Purvis and his wife Sarah
  • Johnson Purvis oldest son of Gilbert Purvis and Effica Howell
  • Gilbert Purvis, Revolutionary Soldier
Elizabeth Rose Campbell Miller was born 16 July 1814 in St. Tammany Parrish, Louisiana, Her 1st husband James Purdee J. Purvis was born about 1811 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. They met and were married on 19 January 1832. Their daughter Mary Anna was born in 24 October 1834.
Gilbert Purvis, Sr. died sometime late 1829 or early 1830 in Rankin County, Mississippi. It was at this time that Efficia Howell Purvis went to live with her Grandson James P. J. Purvis.

When Effica Howell died in July 1834, James P. J. Purvis petitioned the County for Letters of administration stating “That your petitioner is the grandson of the said deceased being the oldest son of her oldest son James.”

So, why did James P. J. Purvis, the grandson, petition the Court and not her son Johnson Purvis? I believe the answer to this question is because Johnson Purvis had passed away sometime before the death of his Mother, Effica Howell Purvis.

There’s a James Purvis that died in 1818 back in South Carolina and the Administrative Bond is on file in Horry County, South Carolina. For years I thought this James Purvis was the Father of James P. J. Purvis. Further research however shows that J. J. Purvis (Johnston James or James Johnston) made the trip to Mississippi and appears in three Tax List for Simpson County, Mississippi (1831, 1832 and 1833).

In this 1832 Simpson County Tax list we find both Father and son listed.

Purvis, Johnson

Gilbert Johnston Purvis, a uncle of James P. J. Purvis, states in his WILL ”I hereby direct my Executors to file a bill in chancery or commence such other suit as may be necessary & proper to procure from the aforesaid James P. J. Purvis, administrator as aforesaid, the full distribution & share of the estate of my deceased parents to which I am entitled insisting upon the advance made by my deceased father the said Gilbert Purvis to James Purvis the father of the said James P. J Purvis in the lifetime of them both, …”

Gilbert Johnson Purvis makes three  important statement in the above comments:
  1. That James Purvis is the Father of James P. J. Purvis
  2. That James Purvis is his brother
  3. That Gilbert Purvis is the father of James and Gilbert Johnston
The thorough analysis of all of these documents show that Johnston James Purvis is a son of Gilbert Purvis and father of  James P. J. Purvis.

NOTE: Johnson/Johnston
For years the name has been shown to be Johnson because Gilbert Purvis parents are John Purvis and Sarah Johnson. But we can see from the tax list above that Johnston is correct and I have a land deed from SC that shows the Gilbert Johnson correct middle name is Johnston
.
Gilbert Johnston Purvis Signature

The DAR application along with the probate and Wills of Effica Howell Purvis, James P.J. Purvis and Gilbert Johnston Purvis all  states that the Father of James P. J. Purvis is either James or Johnson Purvis. The two tax list shows that Johnston Purvis is Johnston J. Purvis hence Johnston James Purvis.

Piecing together the clues within the above documents and we have a clear case that:

Johnston James Purvis is the father of James P. J. Purvis

So who is his Mother of James P. J. Purvis?
This one was a little tougher to answer; but, I believe with about 99% certainty that we have also found his Mother.

In  August 1834, Effica Howell Purvis, grandmother of James P. J. Purvis died Hinds County, Mississippi leaving a sizable estate of slaves and personal property.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-30941-1653-18?cc=2036959.

Image 152 from Effica Purvis estate is partially transcribed below:
"Milly & her children, John, Frances and her child to J.P.J. Purvis & William Purvis, Jr. which said negroes we valued to the sum of $3100, upon the said William Purvis, John Purvis paying to the said JPJ Purvis & William Purvis, Jr. each the sum of $150, it being equal half of the difference in the valuations of the afs'd negroes when divided between said heirs. All of which is respectfully submitted to the Hon. Henry…"

Gilbert Johnson Purvis made the following 2 statements in his WILL:
"all of my property is now in dispute between myself & James P. I. [or J.] Purvis and William Purvis and in consequence thereof upon the advance made by my deceased father the said Gilbert Purvis to James Purvis the father of the said James P. I. [or J.] Purvis in the lifetime of them both, and after my Executors"
and
“I do hereby nominate my friends and relatives John Purvis & William Purvis of Hinds County my executors to this my last will and testament”

Close examination of the estate documents and Wills shows that the estate was left two groups of men:

J. P. J. Purvis and William Purvis
and
John Purvis and William Purvis (relatives)

I believe that  William Jr. and James P. J. Purvis are in fact sibling and children of James Purvis. I also believe that William Jr. is  William H. H. Purvis  and was referred to as Jr because he had an older Uncle William mentioned in the 2nd group of men with John Purvis. I have no document proving this but I have researched this line for 41 years and I base my conclusions on all the data and research I have done in those 41 years.

William and John Purvis are referred to in the WILL as"my friends and relatives John Purvis & William Purvis of Hinds County my executors to this my"
(note: William & John are two sons of James F.  Purvis, Sr. a brother of Gilbert Purvis)

William H. H. Purvis married Jemima Magee about 1830. After the death of  Effica Howell Purvis (Grandmother) in August 1834 and brother James P. J. Purvis in 1836;  William H. H. Purvis gather up his Mother, Wife Jemima and their 3 children and moved to Polk County, Texas. There William H. H. and Jemima would add two additional children to their family.

There also, came the first clue to the Mother of William H. H. Purvis and his brother James Purdee J. Purvis.

1850 Polk County, Texas

Line 10, Sarah Purvis, widow, age 60, born in SC. The Purvis left Chesterfield County, SC about 1818, migrated to Clarke County, Alabama and them on to Hinds , Simpson and Rankin County, Mississippi.

I think there is enough direct and circumstantial evidence to show the reconstructed composition of this family to be:
  • Johnston James Purvis, male, b. 1784-1790, d. aft 1833, Simpson Co., MS
  • Sarah [LNU], born 1790, d. aft 1850, Polk Co., TX.
  • James Purdee J. Purvis, son, b. abt 1811, d. bef 22 Feb. 1836, Hinds Co., MS.
  • William H. H. Purvis, b. abt 1813, d. June 1855, Polk Co., TX.
Johnston James Purvis

James F. Purvis, Sr. b. 1760, SC DID NOT MARRY Sarah Garrard (Rankin Co., MS)

The Wife of James F. Purvis, Sr. (1760-Nov 1836) is NOT KNOWN.

James F. Purvis, Sr., b. 1760, Chesterfield, SC son of John Purvis and Sarah Johnson DID NOT MARRY Sarah Garrard.

James Purvis, b. 1785, Culpepper, VA, son of William Purvis and Jane Burk DID MARRY Sarah Garrard on 31 March 1808 in Fleming Co., Kentucky.

While James Purvis and Sarah Garrard were getting married in Kentucky in 1808; James F. Purvis, Sr. and his family (wife and 6 Children) were at home in Chesterfield, SC.

I do not understand people who automatically click and link every suggestion provided by a shaky leaf on Ancestry. This action has resulted in a profusion of mis-information on the web and an overabundance of fraudulent genealogy just as profuse as fake news is today.

There is a Kentucky marriage licensee for a James Purvis to a Sarah Garrard that these click-it operator attaches to any James Purvis that get the shaky leaf without any rational examination of the facts.
James Purvis
The KY Marriage Licensee shows a SARAH GARRARD marrying a JAMES PURVIS; but he was not the James F. Purvis, Sr. that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Clarke County, Alabama and then on to Rankin County, MS where he died in November 1836.

James F. Purvis, born about 1760 in SC and Died in November 1836 was the son of John Purvis and Sarah Johnston/Johnson. THE NAME OF HIS WIFE IS NOT KNOWN. His brother was Gilbert Purvis who married Efficia Howell. James, Gilbert and several other Purvis families migrated from Chesterfield, SC about 1818. They are not listed in the 1820 Census for Chesterfield County, SC.
James and his family are listed in 1800 and 1810 and I can assure you he was married long before the 1808 Kentucky Marriage.

Based on these two censuses we can see that James was married and had 6 children prior to 1800 and statistics points to a likely marriage date of about 1788-89. This is based on the assumption that the oldest female in the household is James Purvis wife.

Again we know that James is in SC and that he is married much earlier that 1808 and has a growing family in both 1800 and 1810. There is no record of James Purvis leaving South Carolina until he migrated with his brother about 1818-1820.

Just a short look on the internet shows that Sarah Garrard married James Purvis on March 31, 1808 in Fleming county, Kentucky, son of William Purvis and Jane Burk. These Purvis were from Culpepper County, Virginia.

Another website showing basically same information.
http://www.vangundy.net/familytree/GP/fam/fam01003.html
And I have no idea how SARAH GARRARD became SARAH GARRARD JAMES. I would suggest contacting one of the individuals posting this information. There are many to choose from on the web.

Don’t be surprised if they tell you that Ancestry says they were married.

James F. Purvis, Sr., (b. 1760-Nov 1836) DID NOT MARRY Sarah Garrard; his wife is currently unknown.

Tombstone Tuesday~Lt. Robert H. Miller

In Memory of
1stLt. Robert Henry Miller
b. 1841
d. 29 August 1862
Second Battle of Manassas

1Lt. Robert H. Miller
Robert H. Miller was the first born son of Elizabeth Rose Campbell Purvis and Joseph Edward Miller. He had a younger brother, Joseph D. Miller.
Elizabeth Rose Purvis was the widow of James Purdee J. Purvis. James had died in 1836 leaving Elizabeth pregnant and with two small children. Before her re-marriage in March 1839, her oldest son would pass away and a new son born. These two children were Mary Ann Purvis and William R. Purvis.
Robert Henry studied at Bethany College in West Virginia  and graduated there in 1859. When War broke out he returned to his ancestral homestead known as the “Flowery Mound" plantation. His parents remained in West Virginia.
In Concordia Pariah, he aided Captain Zebulon York in organizing the 14th Louisiana Infantry also know as the Concordia Rifles. On 19 June 1861, Robert Henry enlisted into the 14th Louisiana Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Forrest P. Conner in an article published in “The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 70, No. 1, Part One (Jan.,1962), pp. 62-91”; Published by: Virginia Historical Society made these comments in his introduction to the publication of thirteen letters sent home to family and friends.
Robet H. Miller's Death
... He was killed on August 29 at Second Manassas when his regiment, part of General Harry T. Hays's First Louisiana Brigade, advanced support General Ambrose P. Hill whose center was being threatened by Union assault. It was noted in an obituary found among the letters Miller's father had arrived for a visit before the battle and was still there perform the last rites after his son's body was recovered.
There is no indication that Robert Henry Miller was returned home for burial. The small snippet above seem to suggest he was buried in place. There is a possibility his body may be entombed, in an unmarked grave, at the Groveton Confederate Cemetery, Groveton, Virginia.

Amanuensis Monday~Land Deed from the Burned Book- Michael Davis to Kinchen Previtt Deed

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County Land Deed from the Burned Book- Michael Davis to Kinchen Previtt Deed

Note: for those who don’t know, the Burnt/Burned Book is a Pre Civil War Deed Book that was recovered from the Bonfire when Union Troops burned the Courthouse and it’s contents in March 1865.

It's Family TimeJames Franklin Teal, son of John Daniel Teal and Sarah Ann ‘Susie’ Wadsworth was born 29 April 1872 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  He would grow up to be a farmer just as his father and grand fathers before him.

James Franklin met and married a young lady by the name of Lessie Ida Davis. Lessie Ida was the daughter of  William Alfred Davis and Nancy J. Hurst. Their first enumeration in any census is the 1900 census for Court House, Chesterfield, South Carolina. That Census shows that they were married in 1891.  At the time of the Census in July 1900; James and Lessie had three children of which two were living.

Mystery Monday~Who Was The Husband Of Elizabeth Hinson of Anson County

I have written many articles extolling the value of Land Deed research. I have solved many problems with information gathered during a short visit to the local Register of Deeds office.

Conversely, land deeds can provide clues that rather than solving a problem they create a problem.
Case in point is Anson County, NC Land Deed X:398 – Thomas Brooks to Vincent Parsons

 Snippet DB X-398
Transcription:
…it being a lot of land that was on a division of lands belonging to the estate of the late John Hinson, Sr. decd. Among his heirs allotted to Elizabeth Brooks the mother of the sd. Thomas Brooks which lot in the plan of division is marked No. 1 Beginning at a stake in the field the 6th corner of a hundred acre tract granted to Crawford & runs…

Parties named within this snippet:
  • the late John Hinson, Sr. decd.
  • Elizabeth [Hinson] Brooks mother of Thos. Brooks
  • Thomas Brooks,
John Hinson, Sr. died in Anson County, North Carolina sometime before July 1828.
In Anson County Deed Book S, page 215, dated 25 September 1818;  John Hinson, Sr. of Anson County, North Carolina gave his 11 year old Grandson Thomas Hinson Brooks a Negro Boy Peter about 16 years of age.

Ironically, this Deed (S:215) has another daughter of John Hinson signing the deed as Susannah T. Brooks. Many researchers have Susannah listed as the Mother of Thomas Brooks but we know that DB X, page 398 says that daughter Elizabeth is the mother of Thomas Hinson Brooks.

Susannah T. Hinson Brooks

These two land deeds have created three unanswered questions.
  1. Is Thomas Brooks and Thomas Hinson Brooks the same individual?
  2. Who is the husband of Elizabeth Hinson, daughter of John Hinson, Sr. and father of Thomas Hinson Brooks?
  3. Who is the husband of Susannah T. Hinson, daughter of John Hinson, Sr.
