Amanuensis Monday~William A. Purvis to William James Purvis, Land Deed.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County Land Deed, William A. Purvis to William James Purvis.

William A. Purvis purchased 30 acres of land from Joseph P. Smith on 6 December 1866 (DB 8, page 284-286). On that same day William James Purvis purchased these 30 acres from his father, William A. Purvis (DB 8, Page 421-423). William J. Purvis then sold the land on 7 January 1888 to T. F. Mulholland (DB 9, Page 284-286). (Chesterfield County, SC).

Further Explanation:
The two land deeds in question are valid and are between Father and Son. After reading the two deeds it's obvious that the original land deeds were lost, misplaced or destroyed and the two were being recorded in 1885 and 1887 at which time William James Purvis would have been (1885-1863 =22) 22 years of age.

In Land Deed (DB 8: 421-423) the Court Clerk is citing the original date (6 Dec 1866) that William A. Purvis purchased these 30 acres land from Joseph P. Smith.  This deed DB 8:421-423 was recorded 19th December 1885.

Then William James Purvis sells the 30 acre land parcel on the 7th day of January 1888 to T. F. Meisenheimer for ninety ($90.00) dollars. (DB 9:284-285)

Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #244 – Alexander McMillan

Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

Alexander McMillan died in early 1869 leaving his wife and six children surviving. His oldest son, Thomas E. McMillan was the administrator on his estate indicating he died intestate.

On 15 July 1869, Thomas E. McMillian signed an affidavit indicating that he would make a true and just inventory of the estate of his father, Alexander McMillan.

The 1870 Mortality Schedule for Chesterfield County shows that Alexander McMillan died in March at the age of 69. The above inventory was taken in July 1869 so we know that Alexander died in March 1869. A FindAGrave Memorial shows his death as 19 March 1869 but I have found no proof of a specific date just the month and year (Mar 1869).

His wife, Mary F. “Malsey” passed away in January 1886.
1st That Mrs. Molsey McMillian late of the County and state aforesaid departed this life intestate on or about the __ day of January 1886.

Probate of the estate was closed on 3 February 1892.

It’s Family Time~The James Knotts Family

It's Family Time
James Knotts, b. 1792 married Mary Jane “Jenny” Eddins daughter of William B. Eddins and his wife Nancy [LNU] in Chesterfield County in 1825.

Brent H.. Holcomb, South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Volume 5, Number 2. <http://www.scmar.com/backissu.html>

James married into the family during a time of conflict with the division and disposition of the estate of Jenny Father’s, William B. Eddins..

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2016/08/treasure-chest-thursdaybill-of.html

By 1835, a Lawrence County, Arkansas Tax List shows that James and Jenny had packed up their family and moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Lawrence County Arkansas. Since the family is enumerated in the 1830 Census for Chesterfield County this migration took place between 1830 and 1835.

James Knotts, 1835 Tax List

In 1850, The family can be found in Randolph County, Arkansas.

1850 CENSUS: Randolph, Arkansas; Roll: M432_30; Image: 78, Page: 36B; Line 21, Dwelling 532, Family 532; James KNOTTS, male, age 58, born in SC; Jane KNOTTS, female, age 50, born in SC; James KNOTTS, male, age 23, born in SC; Joseph KNOTTS, male, age 22, born in SC; Rose A. KNOTTS, female, age 19, born in SC; Burton KNOTTS, male, age 13, born in AR; Laurence KNOTTS, male, age 13, born in AR; Robert KNOTTS, male, age 11, born in AR; Susan KNOTTS, female, age 10, born in AR; Mariah KNOTTS, female, age 8, born in AR and James W. STEWART, male, Farmer, age 19, born in TN.

I have not found a death date for Jenny Knotts but on-line trees shows she died in 1855. Since there is no tombstone for either her or her husband  this date is suspect and will be furthered researched.

I did find a death date for James Knotts showing that he died on 19 January 1858. While the on-line trees has this date none had the source of this date.

Levied Upon the Property of Moses Brock and Margaret Calvit

Moses Brock and Margaret Calvet

SHERRIFF’S SALE
William Townsend to Margaret Calvert, William Brock, Moses Brock, et al; fi fa on bond.
By virtue of the above stated writ of fieri facias to me directed, from the honorable the circuit court of Hinds county, I will sell at public auction, to the highest bidder, for gold or silver.
On the 1st Monday, 6t day of April next, within the hours prescribed by law, before the door of the court house of said county, in the town of Raymond, one negro girl slave, named Rebecca; which was levied upon us as the property of Margaret Calvet and Moses Brock.
                                                          DANIEL THOMAS, Sh’ff
March 20th                                                              11---3t fee 12

Moses Brock, was born 8 Sept 1808, a son of William Brock and his wife Charlotte. Between 1817 and 1820, William and Charlotte moved their family from Chesterfield County, SC and migrated to Mississippi settling in what is now Hinds County, Mississippi.

On 15 February 1838, Moses A. Brock married Margaret Calvit. Margaret was the widow of John Calvit who passed away in January 1835. She was born Margaret Six, daughter of Phillip Six and Charlotte Selser.  This marriage was the second marriage for both Moses and Margaret with Moses previously married to Celia Goodwin, deceased.

Marriage - Moses Brock and Margaret Six Calvit

Moses and Margaret had 7 children before her death in March 1860.

A fieri facias or fi fa  is a writ directed by the Court to a Sheriff to take action. In this case William Townsend has won a judgement forcing Moses Brock and his wife Margaret Calvit along with Moses’ father William Brock to sale a negro girl slave named Rebecca. I really don’t see any reason why William Brock, Moses’ father was named.

After the death of Margaret in 1860, Moses married Eliza E. Boren. Moses died sometime before 1880 and Eliza died in August 1880.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage Bond, Peter Kauble and Christina Dry

Peter Kauble and Christina Dry
Married: 17 October 1797
Cabarrus County, NC

Marriage Bond, Peter Cauble Christina Dry2

Peter Kauble  and Christina Dry were married on 17 Oct 1797 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

There are many Peter Kauble/Cauble/Coble in Cabarrus County and so far I have not learned much about the Peter Kauble that married my cousin Christina Dry.

Christina Dry was  born about 1777, a daughter of Owen Ulrich Dry and his wife Eve (maiden name unknown). Christina was twenty years of age when she married Peter Kauble.

Family Lineage/Trees on-line shows that Peter and Christina had 11 children; 4 sons and 7 daughters. All the children are named within the Last Testament and Will of Peter Cauble, Jr. (Will Book H, page 478-481; Rowan County, NC). However, this Peter Cauble wrote his will in August 1839 and reported that his name wife’s name was Catherine.

Peter Cauble Will Snippet

This Peter Cauble is also reported to have been born in 1738. I believe that this Peter Cauble married Catherine Bruner.

I have not found any proof of birth or death dates for either Peter Kauble or his wife Christina Dry. I see no evidence supporting any of the dates published on-line thus making them all very skeptical.

If you have information about Peter Kauble and Christina Dry I would loved to hear from you.

Christina Dry Kauble is my 1st Cousin 5 Times Removed.

Eve Dry
b. Feb. 1, 1757
d. Nov. 17, 1828
bu. Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery

The Tombstone of Eve Dry can be viewed here:

The past 189 years have been very harsh on this tombstone and today it is unreadable and would be totally indistinguishable among other rocks of the same color and size.

Eve Dry was the first wife of Owen Ulrich Dry, son of Charles Dry and Christina Muss. Based on the birth of their known first born, Owen and Eve were married about 1776/77.

Eve and Owen had 4 known children before her death in 1828. On 9 December 1834, Owen remarried uniting with Catherine Polk, age 70.

The "Standard" published the marriage of Mr. Owen Dry, aged 80, to Miss Catherine Polk, aged 70, and adds with evident satisfaction ---"all for the Administration "----.
What else could be expected of individuals in their dotage?

On 6 February 1863, Carroll Washington Davis passed away in Chesterfield, SC. Three weeks later, his 2nd wife, Mary B. Boatwright Davis, sister to his deceased wife, passed away leaving 7 orphan children under the age of twenty one.

The obituary2 for the oldest son claims that he (William Benjamin “Uncle Doc” Davis) was returning home from the War and

“After reaching home on stick and crutch he helped look after and care for his six orphan brothers and sisters, his father and mother having died February 6 and 28, 1863, respectively.”

In December 1870, Michael Davis (my 3rd Great Grandfather) was named Guardian of  the youngest of these 7 children – Mary Eliza Davis, b. 22 February 1863.

Mary B. Boatwright 2nd wife) and  Elizabeth Boatwright (1st wife ) of Carroll Washington Davis were daughters of Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. Thus, the 7 children were all grandchildren of Lewis and Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright.

We know that Lewis Boatwright., Jr. died on 7 March 1863. Up until this point all that was known about Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright was that she died after 1870.

I believe this estate folder sheds some light on when Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright passed away.

As stated above, Lewis Boatwright, Jr. died in March 1863 at which time his surviving spouse and children inherited his estate. I believe the death of Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright occurred sometime about November 1874 triggering the court action requiring new guardianship of the surviving grandchildren who were the heirs-at-law in this estate.

The children in this Estate are my 2nd Cousins 3 times removed.

Michael Davis is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

His sister, Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

The Marriages and Death of Eve Caroline Dry

Eve Caroline Dry was born 22 May 1844, a daughter of George M. Dry and Mary ‘Polly’ Sides, Her birth and baptism is recorded in the minutes of the Dutch Buffalo Creek Meeting House: 1745-1806. 1

At age 19, Eve Caroline married James Hall on 7 February 1864 in Stanly County, North Carolina.
In 1880, Eve Caroline and James can be found in the Census living in  Eldorado, Montgomery County, North Carolina.  There are 5 children in the household; 2 sons and 3 daughters.

On 20 December 1898 Eve Caroline, a widow, married Archie A.  Adcock in Gaston County, North Carolina. Her husband Archie Adcock dies in Sept 1907.

Then all trace of Eve was lost until I started researching her children. In 1910, Eve Caroline is listed as  E. Coroline Adcock and living in Gaston County with daughters Beulah and Dora, both married, in the household.  I haven’t found her in 1920 but in 1930 she is with daughter Emma Meacham, living in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Eve Caroline died on 7 December 1932 at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 17 days. Her NC death certificate shows her death was the result of  “Shock from the fracture of both hips through accidental fall on floor.”

DC - Eve C. Dry Adcock

She is buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Lowell, Gaston County, North Carolina with her second husband, Archie A. Adcock.

Eve Caroline Dry Hall Adcock is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

The Marriage of Catherine Dry and John Laton

A few weeks ago I went looking for a marriage record of the marriage of Catherine Dry and John Laton. My fist attempt was a search of the wonderful Cabarrus County  marriage Bonds but I was unsuccessful in my search.

Most on-line trees shows that John Laton married Catherine Franklin Dry in  1811.
  • Where did this date come from?
  • Where did the middle name Franklin come from for Catherine Dry.
I don't consider Ancestry Family Tree to be a source and the marriage on these trees are not sourced.

Next I searched two North Carolina Marriage Databases found on FamilySearch. Again there was no record of a marriage between Catherine Dry and John Laton.

After many hours of search I had absolutely no results in finding a marriage record for this couple and for my time on the computer.

My last resort was the War of 1812 pension file for John Laton and it was in his pension file that I found a record of their marriage, the date it took place and the place of marriage.

John Laton and Catherine Dry were married on  10 June 1824 in Montgomery County, North Carolina.

Catherine Dry Marriage to John Laton

She [Catherine Dry Laton] further states that she was married to the said John Laton, in Montgomery County now Stanly County, on or about 10th June 1824, by  and John  Kendall who was, a Justice of the Peace, and that her name before the marriage was Catherine Dry. 1

The above snippet is a source and it was found within the pension file of John Laton.
Catherine Dry had no middle name on any document that I have found and there was no middle name mentioned in the document sourced above.

Catherine Dry is the daughter of Johan Martin Dry and Catherine Keppel.

Catherine Dry is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Andrew Jackson Huneycutt

ANDREW HUNEYCUTT COL 5
Mr. Andrew Huneycutt of western Stanly, is in his 84th year, and is still able to attend court. He is a man of extraordinary physique, and tips the beam at 270 pounds. He was never sick two days at a time in his whole life until last winter when the grip held him down some 20 days or more. If we are right he was one of the first commissioners of Stanly county and has always figured as a prominent citizen. He is remarkably stout for one of his age and looks as if he might yet attend several other courts. 1

Mr. Andrew Huneycutt of Stanly county, says the Stanly News, is in his 84th years, and is still able to attend court. He is a man of extraordinary physique, and tips the beam at 270 pounds. Andrew Huneycutt was a prominent farmer in Stanly County between about 1830 and his death in May 1903.

He married Mary Ann ‘Polly’ Crayton about 1830. Their first born, Sarah Ann Caroline, was born about 1831 according to census data. To this union were born 10 children; 5 sons and 5 daughters.

Polly Crayton Huneycutt died on 16 July 1887.

On 12 January 1888, at age 79, Andrew married Sarah Catherine Morton, age 29, daughter of John and Emaline Morton.

The obituary for Andrew Jackson Huneycutt can be found in the “Monroe Journal,” Monroe, NC, 2 June 1903. To quote from that obit - “He was a link between the present and the past, and was full of interesting reminiscences of the past. He had shot buffalo and deer at the famous Big Lick, years and years ago.”
