He was a farmer, like his father and most other men of that time. About 1853, John Allen married Nancy Jane Starnes, daughter of Nathan T. Starnes and Margaret F. Myers.
In 1860, the family can be found in Stanly County with two children in the household.
In January 1861, the Civil War engulfed the nation and John Allen Crayton enlisted in Company D, North Carolina 28th Infantry Regiment on 29 Jul 1861.
The 28th Regiment participated in some of the most serious and major battles of the Civil War and John Allen Crayton was there. It was part of the Branch-Lane Brigade which was known as General Lee’s Immortals.
During the Battle of Chancellorsville (April 30 to May 6, 1863) John Allen Crayton was killed in action on 3 May 1863.
His military war record on Fold3.com documents his death and shows that he died with honor. He was so admired that "a medal was presented to his friends for his bravery." 1
