David Sellers, Landowner; But, Who are his Parents?

I have spent the past 42 years researching various families of Chesterfield County. It hasn’t been an easy task and oftentimes very challenging and frustrating.  Case in point is David Sellers. Two simple tasks have occupied a tremendous amount of my time. They are:
  • When did David Sellers pass away?
  • Who are his parents?
Based on Census data we know that David was born about 1825. This is based on the 1880 Census for Anson County. This is the only Census that David Sellers has been found to be enumerated within.  I often use Land Deeds to break through these choke points but in this case land deeds have been of little help.  I have only found one Land Deed and it’s from Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
He married Annie Jane Smith about 1853. Annie was born 4 Nov 1831 and d. 19 Feb. 1917. David and Annie had 4 children:
  • Leander Jackson Sellers, b. 19 Apr 1854
  • Phillip Arnold Sellers, b. 28 Feb. 1857
  • Thomas Hughmore Sellers, b. 9 Nov. 1864
  • Hardy Franklin Sellers, b. 17 Oct. 1871
With names like Phillip and Hardy, very common names within the Hardy Sellers line, I feel confident that David is also a descendant of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook.

Amanuensis Monday~Land Deed, Father to Son

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County Land Deed, Duncan Teal to Thos. L. Teal  Deed. 1

Transcription:

Very little is known about Duncan Teal/Teel. The first appearance of Duncan is on 1 Nov 1862 when he enlisted into the 6th Calvary in Chesterfield, South Carolina. After capture on 1 December 1864 and release from prison at Pt. Lookout, Maryland on 20 June 1865 he returned to Chesterfield and married Louisa Ann Boatwright a daughter of Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. Last Will and Testament of Jeptha Gulledge

I’m aware that many of my readers have no idea who Jeptha Gulledge and his wife Catherine is but I hope to enlighten each of you through this blog.

Jeptha Gulledge was born 6 Dec 1801 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the reverend Joel Gulledge and Zilpha Huntley.

Sometime about 1824 Jeptha married Catherine Sellers. Catherine Sellers was born about 1806 also in Chesterfield County, SC.  Catherine was the daughter of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood.
About this time also, many Chesterfield families had decided that they wanted to move westward in search of greener pastures. Catherine’s parents were among this group so naturally the newly wedded Jeptha and Catherine joined the caravan. There their first born, Thomas S. Gulledge, was born on 30 June 1825 in Carroll County, Tennessee.

Jeptha and Catherine would have a total of 7 children; 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Jeptha Gulledge wrote his Last Will and Testament on 4 September 1842. The probate of his estate with John W., Sellers took place in Oct 1842. I haven’t found his exact date of death for Jeptha but I know he died between 4 Sept. 1842 and  October Term 1842.

Estate folder: #439 - Mary E. Davis, et al
As stated above, Lewis Boatwright, Jr. died in March 1863 at which time his surviving spouse and children inherited his estate.
