The Death of Alfred Gulledge

Alfred Gulledge, son of Joel Ellis Gulledge and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Sellers is named in two Federal Censuses with his parents. In the 1850 Chesterfield County Census; Alfred Gulledge is listed as age 18. Then in the 1860 Chesterfield County Census; Alfred Gulledge is listed as age 28. Thus we can say that Alfred Gulledge was born in 1832. However, the tombstone on his grave (a Military Monument) in the Gulledge Family Cemetery, Ruby, Chesterfield County, South Carolina has no dates engraved upon the marker.

Alfred Gulledge enlisted into the Civil War on 16 January probably 1862. He was enlisted by J. A. Evans for a 3 year period and signed up with Company “B”, 26th South Carolina Infantry.

His military records consist of 8 images and several shows that he was absent from roll call due to Sickness. Research shows that before leaving for the War that Alfred married Louisa Sellers probably sometime after 11 July 1860 when he was listed as single in his parents home.  Their first and only child - Phillip Alfred Gulledge was born on 24 May 1861.

Alfred Gulledge died 27 October 1863 of disease at his home in Chesterfield, South Carolina.[1]

After the death of Alfred Gulledge; Louisa Sellers Gulledge, his widow, married William Perry Baker abt 1866. To this union was born 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Louisa Sellers Gulledge Baker died 8 November 1899. Alfred is buried in the Gulledge Cemetery, Ruby, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Louisa Sellers Gulledge Baker is buried at Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery, same town.
