It’s Family Time~The Last Will of John Davis

John Davis is the oldest son of David David and Jane Miles our fifth Great Grandparents. He is the oldest brother of our grandfather Thomas Davis.

John settled far a short time in Anson County until Mecklenburg was created at which time he acquired land in what became Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

John married Mary Henderson about 1762.  To this union was born 8 siblings; four sons and four daughters.

THE WILL OF JOHN DAVIS

In the name of God Amen. I John Davis of the County of Mecklenburg in the State of No. Carolina Make this my last Will and testament, and first of all l  I resign my Soul to the Creator in all Humble hope of its future happinefs as in the dispose of a being Infinitely good---his touching such worldly goods as it hath pleased God in this life to blefs me with I dispose of in the following manner.
Imprimsis: I order my funeral expenses to be first paid and if any just debts appear against my Estate I order them to be paid as soon as possible.
Item. I leave + bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife the third part of my miniscule? Estate + her bed + furniture and wearing apparel, with my Roan Colored mare + her saddle.
Item. I order my wife to Live on the plantation whereon we now live during her life in widowhood and to raise my children thereon in the best manner She can as to clothing + Education suitable to them fortune Untill my Son James arrives to the age of twenty one years, at which Period he is to take full pofsefsion of the before maintained plantation as his own property + the same to enjoy forever with the appurtenances there unto Belonging
Item. I leave + bequeath unto my Son David that piece or parcel of land which I bought of Isaac Sellers to be by him fully possessed and Enjoyed forever---
Item. . I leave + bequeath unto my Son John Fifty pounds out of my Estate to be by my Executors paid unto him at his being twenty year of age, and also be bound unto a good Workman that can teach the Saddler's trade properly the Said boy to be at such age and for such number of years as my Executors shall think proper.
Item. I order + appoint my Son James to pay unto my son Joseph fifty pounds at his the Said Joseph being Twenty one years of age out of the plantation left to him the Said James as an Equivalent to him the said Joseph who is to be bound unto a good workman that can teach the Spinning Wright trade at such age + for such number of years as my Executors shall think proper.
Item. I have + bequeath unto each of my daughters herein after named  to wit Ann, Mary + Isabelle the Sum of Thirty pounds out of my estate to be paid to them at their respective marriage or their coming of full age according to which shall happen first .
If my wife be pregnant as she thinks she is I order + it is my will that if it please God to spare him untill she be delivered if if <sic> the Child be a male he is to Share equal with my Son John + Joseph in my Estate + be bound unto such trade as my Executors shall think him most fit for at Such age + for Such number of years as they shall think proper and if the aforesaid Child be a female I order her to Share equal with my other daughters herein before mentioned.---
Item. I order + it is my Will that my Executors to keep my Stock of live Cattle + all my other movable Estate entire as it is at this day for at least one year after my deceased before Sale be made thereof + then to reserve two of my best work horses Creatures for the use of my wife + children and also four of my Milch Cows for my wife + Children's joint use. I also order one set of plow Trans. Plow two Horse tree hangings Clevis + gears to be kept to raises Bread for my Wife + children.
And Lastly, I nominate Appoint Constitute + ordain my Dearly beloved Wife Mary Davis + Capt. James Harris of Reedy Creek to be + they are hereby the Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand + affixed my Seal this 24th day of August in the year of Our Lord 1777.

Birth of Children~Morgan David and Catherin Howell

Morgan David and Catherin Howell are my Seventh Paternal Great Grand Parents.
In July 1684, the ship “Vine” arrived  from Liverpool with passengers bound for the Welsh Tract. Many believe that Morgan and Catherin David arrived on this ship. A manifest on-line DOES NOT show them as passengers but does show a David David. (Line 10) ¹

Morgan and Catherine David had five children listed in his Will and probated on 18 Sept 1695.
Morgan David dated his will 15. 12 mo. 1694-5. He was buried 17. 12 mo. 1694-5. This will was probated by his widow, Catherine, who was sole executrix, 18. 7 mo. 1695. (Welsh Settlmt Pa., Browning, p. 245; Gen. Soc. Pa., vol. ii, p. 31.) His estate to go to his two eldest sons, John and Evan; he mentions son David, and leaves legacies to daughters Catherine and Elizabeth, and to the Meeting House at Haverford; he mentions property called "Chestnut-well," and "Beech-well." William Howell, Morris Llewellyn, Francis Howell, and David Lawrence are named overseers. Witnesses to this will were Robert Owen, Robert Powell, and John Humphreys. ²


The Five Children named within the Will are:

• John David – eldest son
• Evan David
• David David
• Catherine David
• Elizabeth David

Most researchers of this line believe that John David the eldest son was born in Wales prior to their voyage to America and the 4 remaining children were born in Pennsylvania.

The second oldest was Evan David would thus be their first born child in America. The David family were Quakers and Morgan in his Will left  legacies for “the meeting house at Haverford.”

The minutes of the Haverford Meeting House did contain the birth dates for three of the five children.

There exist FindAGrave memorials for these three children all containing misinformation. The creator failed to take into consideration the differences in Calendars used by the “Quakers”.

In other words, before 1752, 11th month was January; 12th month was February; 1st month was March; 2nd month was April and so on. [This entire statement copied verbatim form Google search]

As stated in the beginning Morgan and Catherin are my Seventh Great Grand Parents.

The five children's are my 6th Great Grand Uncles and Grand Aunts.

WILL OF PHILLIP F. DAVIS
In the name of God Amen I Phillip F. Davis Planter of Williamsburgh District calling to mind the mortality of man do make and declare this to be my last Will and testament
First I give my sole to Almighty God that gave it and my body to the dust to be buried at the discretion of my under named Executor
Secondly It is my will and desire that all my lawful debts & funeral expenses be paid
Thirdly I give to my friend Francis Britton my shot gun
Fourthly It is my will that all the remainder of my estate consisting of one tract of land in Williamsburgh District on Great Pee Dee whereon I now live also my stock of all Kinds Plantation tools Household and Kitchen furniture be sold at the discretion of my after named Executor either by publick or private sale I also empower my Executor to make good and lawful titles to the said Tract of land
Fifthly That my Executor lay out the moneys arising from the sales of said property for a negro or negroes and said negro or negroes to be given to my beloved sister Lucrisee Richardson and her heirs forever.

Phillip F. Davis, b. abt 1792, a son of Henry ‘Harry” Davis and his wife Rachel Elizabeth McCants. Phillip was a very successful Planter in the Williamsburgh District, South Carolina. I have found no record of a marriage. He leaves his estate to a Sister, Lucrisee Richardson. Phillip died before 5 May 1818; the day his Will was proven in Court.

I haven’t sorted out the exact relationship of these two men but these Davis' are my 5th and 6th generation relatives.

It‘s Family Time~Samuel and Sarah Ann Hurst Boatwright

Samuel Boatwright was born on 5 Aug 1832, a son of Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. He was the fourth of eight children born to Lewis and Elizabeth.

Samuel Boatwright married Sarah Ann Hurst  about 1851 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. This date is based on the birth of their first born, a son named William Manley Boatwright with a date of birth of 13 December 1852.

Sarah Ann Hurst, daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers, was born on 10 Mar 1826 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Samuel was a farmer just as most others during this time period.  Their family was small compared to others during this era consisting of 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Samuel Boatwright and Sarah Ann Hurst had the following children:

        i.    William Manley "Billy" Boatwright, born 13 Dec 1852, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Julia Ann Davis, abt 1870; married Lottie May Williams, 7 Jul 1912, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Susan Davis, 15 Sep 1920, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 23 Jun 1937, Gulledge Twsp.,Anson Co.,NC.
         ii.    John Calvin "Cally" Boatwright, born abt 1855, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Henrietta E. Hurst; married Elizabeth Mary Montgomery, abt 1896; died 25 Aug 1938, Sarasota, Sarasota, Florida.
         iii.    Nancy Elizabeth Boatwright, born 1858, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John W. Therrell; died bef 8 Aug 1876, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Boatwright all the right, title, interest, claim and demand which I have now, or may hereafter have either in possession or expectancy of, in or to any share part or portion of the estate, both real and personal of the Estate of the late Samuel Boatwright deceased, which I may have acquired through my late wife Nancy E. (The daughter of said Samuel) either of the real or personal estate. [Dated 8 August 1876]

Samuel  Boatwright died on 19 Feb 1863 at the age of 30 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Probate Folder 80 documents the dispersal of Samuel's Estate.

Sarah Ann Hurst Boatwright died on 28 Aug 1910 at the age of 84 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Sarah Ann left a Will and Probate Folder 1141 documents the dispersal of Sarah's Estate.

Samuel and Sarah Ann Boatwright are buried in the Boatwright Family Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Samuel Boatwright is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Last Will and Testament of Rebecca Keziah Godfrey Roberts

Rebecca Keziah Godfrey was born December 1755, a daughter of Richard Godfrey and Rebecca Guy.

On 20 December 1775, at age 20, Rebeca Keziah married David Davis, son of Benjamin Davis, Sr. and Rachel Port. To this union was born 7 children; 5 sons and 2 daughters.
On 16 October 1798, David Davis passed away leaving his widow, Rebecca, and 7 surviving children.

Six years and 4 months after the death of her husband David Davis, Rebecca Kezieh Godfrey Davis entered into a Marriage Contract, dated 1 February 1805, with a local planter by the name of Roger Roberts.

Rebecca Kezieh Godfrey Davis and Roger Roberts were married in 1805, Marion County, South Carolina. An exact marriage date has not been found. Roger Roberts died before 1810; Rebecca Keziah died between the date of her Will (21 July 1823) and the 1830 Census. No exact date of death has been found for Rebecca Keziah. Her Will, in it’s entirety can be viewed and read below.

WILL OF KEZIA ROBERTS
In the name of God Amen. I Kezia Roberts of the State of South Carolina Marion District being of sound mind memory and understanding do make declare and ordain this to be my last Will and testament revoking all others at any time by me heretofore made Imprimis. I will that all my funeral Expenses with all my just debts be paid as quick as pofsible.
Item. To my beloved son Henry Davis I give and bequeath the  following negroes named Nero, Bine, Seburn, Harry, Susanah and Christiana with all their future increase together with my Lands, Stock of every Kind and all my household furniture to him and his Heirs forever but should my Son Henry Davis die leaving no Lawful Ifsue then in that Case it is my Will that the first four mentioned negroes, named Nero, Bine, Seburn and Harry with all their Increase, to return and be divided among my surviving children with my two Grand Children. Frances Janett and David Williams Davis Share and Share alike Last I do nominate and appoint my son Henry and my friend John C. Davis my Executors to this my last Will and testament. Witnefs my hand and Seal this 21 of July in the year of our Lord 1823 in the forty eight year of American Independence.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage of David W. Honeycutt and Mary M. Umsted

David W. Honeycutt, son of James Irvin Honeycutt and Sarah Barrier was born 3 March 1821.

On 3 February 1857, David W. Honeycutt, age 35, and Mary M. Umsted, age 21, were married by the Rev. L. C. Groseclose in Orange County, North Carolina.
Their only child, a daughter born 7 May 1858 died approximately 6 weeks after birth. In 1860, David and his wife Mary are living in the Household of the Rev. Levi Cook Grosseclose, a Lutheran Minister in Rowan County. 

Sadly, Mary M. Umsted Honeycutt also passed away 24 July 1863 in Cabarrus County.

In 1870, David W. is back home living with his parents, James and Sarah Honeycutt.

On 27 May 1877, David W. Honeycutt re-married. His new bride Caroline was almost 20 years his junior. In their 1880 household is David’s Mother Sarah Barrier Honeycutt and two Isenhour Nephews.

David W. Honeycutt, 82, passed away on 29 March 1903.

In the Name of God Amen. I James Davis of the District of Marion Planter being in health of body and of Sound mind memory and understanding Praise be to God for the same do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
First, I will that I shall be decently buried and I give and bequeath unto my wife Sarah Davis the one half of my Stock and Household furniture to her own proper use forever. It is also my will and desire that my wife Sarah Davis shall have her maintenance during her widowhood out of my estate. Chesterfield County SC Estate Series:  This is a series of postings of selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Today’s subject is the Estate of William Frederick Rivers.


William Frederick Rivers, a Chesterfield merchant, died at the Charlotte Sanatorium on the late evening of 3 September 1926. He was a son of James Samuel Rivers and Laura Jane Davis. 

He left a sizable estate, his widow Nettie and 7 children varying in age from 15 to 9 months. One child, Vera Mae, had passed away just pass her 3rd birthday, at age 3, on 8 August 1918. 

His widow, Nettie (Hinson) Rivers was name administratrix of the Estate of her husband, William Frederick Rivers.

Heirs-at-law of the Estate are:

It’s Family Time~2nd Marriage of Zilpha Ann Sellers

Last week we saw that Zilpha Ann Sellers lost her husband, Dickson P. Gordon, after a short 1 year, 2 months and 19 days of marriage.

After the loss of her husband, Zilpha Ann married William Jephta Gaddy in 1854/55.

Zilpha Ann Sellers was the daughter of Hardy Sellers and Levina Gulledge. William Jeptha Gaddy was the son of James Gaddy and Amelia “Rilla” Gulledge. The Mothers of  William and Zilpha are sisters.

Thomas Hardy Gaddy , the first born child of  William Jeptha and Zilpha Ann was born abt 1855 and died in Oct. 1856. This is the basis for suggesting they were married about 1854/55. Also in the 1900 Census they state that they have been married 45 years with 9 children with 7 living. No extant marriage records exist for that time period. 

Death: Died on the 20th of October near Chesterfield Court House Thomas Hardy infant son of William J. and Zilpha A. Gaddy, aged 1 years.

As shown in the 1900 Census, William and Zilpha Ann would have 9 children, of which 7 would survive to adulthood. 

William Jeptha Gaddy and Zilpha Ann Sellers had the following children:

i. Thomas Hardy Gaddy was born in 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 20 Oct 1856 at the age of 1 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. William Preston Gaddy was born on 1 Apr 1857 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 19 Dec 1949 at the age of 92 in Harlingen, Cameron, Texas.
iii. Eliza Mary Gaddy was born on 2 May 1859 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 9 Oct 1862 at the age of 3 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv. Rillia Lavinia Gaddy, born 4 Mar 1861, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married William A. Johnson; died 25 Mar 1925, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. Jeptha Robert Gaddy was born on 18 Mar 1864 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 19 Mar 1934 at the age of 70 in Lisbon, Sampson County, North Carolina. He was buried on 23 Mar 1934 in Ingold, Sampson County, North Carolina.
vi. Elijah Johnson Gaddy was born on 3 Sep 1866 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 3 Jun 1952 at the age of 85 in Kerrville, Kerr, Texas.
vii. Zilpha Ann Adella "Della" Gaddy, born 7 Nov 1868, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John Franklin Horne; died 23 Dec 1958, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
viii. Walter Francis Gaddy, born 25 Jun 1871, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Elizabeth Irene Burch; died 1 Jun 1940, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

If the 1900 Census is correct, I’m missing one child from my database. The two deceased children are: Thomas Hardy Gaddy and Eliza Mary Gaddy.


Zilpha Ann Sellers Gaddy is my 4th Great Grand Aunt.

Marriage Licensee for Andrew Jackson Cogdill and Dicy Jane Huneycutt

Today’s posting is the marriage license for Andrew Jackson Cogdill and Dicy Jane Huneycutt.
Andrew Jackson Cogdill and Dicy Jane Huneycutt were married on 2 March 1837 in Haywood County, North Carolina.

Dicy Jane Huneycutt, b. 4 November 1821 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. She was 3rd child, second born daughter, to Joseph K. Huneycutt and his wife Mary “Polly” Love.

are jointly and severally held and firmly bounded unto Ward B. Dudley Esq. Governor of  the Sate of North Carolina, and to his successors in office, for the time being, in the full and joint sum of one thousand dollars; to the payment which well and truly to be made and done, we do bind ourselves, and each and every of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals, and dated 2nd day, of March A.D. 1837

      The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That whereas the above 
Bounden Jackson Cagdale hath the day of the date hereof applied for and obtained a License to intermarry with Dicy J. If very obvious there are differences between the surname of both the groom and the bride on the above marriage license. Through other civil records and on his tombstone Andrew Jackson surname is spelled COGDILL.

Conversely, Dicy Jane’s surname is spelled Huneycutt, Honeycutt not HUNACUTT.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Blount and Mary Susan (Cook) Alsobrook

Blount Alsobrook and Mary Susan Cook were married before 1830 most likely in Trigg County, Kentucky. The 1830 Census for Trigg County shows them married with a young female 0-5 years of age in that census. Mary Susan was the daughter of Daniel Cook, Sr. and Ruth Moultrie. Only one known child was born to this union, a son, John Marion Alsobrook, b. 26 December 1834.

About 1812, Daniel Cook, Sr. died in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. After the death of Daniel, Ruth Moultrie Cook, the widow, packed up her family and moved them to Christian County, Kentucky, sometime before October 1816.

Her son, Joseph Moultrie Cook had preceded her to Kentucky. On 10 August 1816 he married Martha “Patsy” Lindsay in Christian County, Kentucky.

About the same time that Ruth left for Kentucky, her daughter Alice and husband William Samuel Sellers migrated from Chesterfield , South Carolina to Wilcox County, Alabama.

Ruth remained in Kentucky until her death after 1830. No exact date has yet been found for Ruth Moultrie Cook. 

The census show us that Blount Alsobrook was in Trigg County,, Kentucky in 1830 and had migrated to Wilcox County, Alabama by 1840. It is believed that they left to join the William Samuel Sellers family after the death of Ruth Moultrie Cook. 

The Mortality Census for 1880 Colbert County Alabama shows that Blount Alsobrook and his wife Mary Susan (Cook) Alsobrook both passed away between 1 June 1879 and 31 May 1880.
Mary Susan (Cook) Alsobrook (Line 13) died October 1879 from Pneumonia. Blount Alsobrook (Line 10) died February 1880 from consumption.
 

Mary Susan (Cook) Alsobrook is my 1st Cousin 6 times removed.

JAMES LINDSAY to RUTHY COOK DEED

This Indenture made this 21st day of November 1825, Between James Lindsay of the County of Trig[g] and State of Kentucky of the one part and Ruthy Cook of the County of Stewart and sate of Tennessee of the other part.
Witnefsetgh that for and in consideration of the sum of two Hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the sd Ruthy Cook, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the Sd. Lindsay hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain + sell deliver in full and confirm unto the said Ruthy Cook their heirs and afsigns forever the following tract of lands situate on the South side of Cumberland River on the Sd Rivers in the said county of Trigg and in the sate of Kentucky bounded as follows to wit: beginning in woods and figures as follows July 15th 1798 Surveyed for Adam Craig 666 2/3 of land by virtue of an entry made August 6th 1784, lying on the South side of Cumberland River adjoining the upper end of Zachariah Johnson’s entry No. 100. Beginning at his upper corner on the river a hickory gum and hoopwood and marked Z (Double E back to back)  thence with said Johnson’s line West 173 poles crofsing a pond to a stake (xxxx stake) in said line thence South 11 E. 150 poles to a stake in the original line thence East 173 poles to a beech and maple near the river thence down the
same North 140- North 25 West 50 poles North 18 West 120 to the beginning containing 333 acres of land be the same more or lefs, together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining To have and to hold the land and hereby conveyed with the appurtenances unto the Sd Ruthy Cook her heirs and afsigns forever and the Sd James Lindsey for himself his heirs, executors or administrators the aforesaid tract of land and appurtenances with the said Ruthy Cook her heirs or afsigns forever. James Lindsey to Ruthy Cook was on the 17th day of April 1826 proven before me, by the oath of Nathan Futrell and on the 24 June 1826 also proven by the oath of Blunt Alsobrook both subscribing witnesses thereto, to be the act and deed, hand and seal of said Lindsey the grantor therein named, for the purposes therein, and the same was ordered to be recorded. In testimony whereof  deed Seal the same together with this certificate we truly recorded in my office. I have hereunto set my hand as clerk of the County Court for the county aforesaid.

James Lindsay was the son-in-law of Ruth Cook. He married Ruth’s daughter Tillitha Cook on 18 October 1819 in Christian County, Kentucky.

Most on-line trees show that Ruth Cook died in 1829. None are more specific than 1829 and none of them have a source for the year 1829. Thus this is a doubtful date and the death of both Ruth Moultrie and her husband, Daniel Cook, still remains a mystery. 


James Lindsay is the husband of my 1st Cousin 6 times removed.

Know all men by these presents That I Ruth Cook of Stewart County and State of Tennessee in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my beloved children John Cook, William Irving Cook, Abraham Martin Cook also for divers good causes and considerations me the said Ruth Cook hereunto moving hath given granted and confirmed and by these presents do give grant and confirm unto the said John Cook, William Irving Cook, Abraham Martin Cook all and singular my goods chattels plates, towels leases and personal estate whatsoever in whose hands custody or possession soever they may be within the state of Tennessee.

It’s Family Time~The 1st Marriage of Zilpha Ann Sellers

Zilpha Ann Sellers was born 9 December 1830, a daughter of Hardy Sellers and Levina Gulledge.



On 25 June 1845, Zilpha Ann, age 14, and Dixon P. Gordon, age 25,  were married in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Dixon P. Gordan was the son of James Gordon; his Mother’s name is unknown.

Tragedy struck this family just 15 months later when Dixon P. Gordon passed away on 13 September 1846.

To this union was born one son, James Dixon Gordon, 1846.

Zilpha Ann would later remarry and raise a large family. We will look at that family next Saturday.

Zilpha Ann Sellers Gordon is my 4th Great Grand Aunt.

Marriage of Thomas J. Huntley and Harriett A. Edgeworth

On 23 January 1859, Thomas J. Huntley and Harriett A. Edgeworth were united in marriage in Union County, North Carolina.

Thomas J. Huntley, age 18, was the son of  Robert C. Huntley and Sarah McLendon.
Harriett A. Edgeworth, age 18, was the daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth and Anna Knight.

Sadly, on 15 July 1959, about 6 months into marriage, Harriett Edgeworth Huntley passed away. Harriett was buried in Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Thomas next married Martha May on 8 Sep 1865 in Union County, North Carolina. Again, we have a short marriage. Robert passed away at the age of 47 on 28 September 1887. He is buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Richmond County, North Carolina.

This Indenture made this 18th of October 1844 between the heirs at law of William P. Jackson late of Anson County State of North Carolina of the one part and John G. Edwards of said State + County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said heirs at law Mary Jackson A. M. Lowry Alex May Stephen Jackson + Benjamin A. Jackson for + in consideration of the sum of Twelve hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said Edwards the receipt + full payment whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargain + Sold and by these presents do give grant bargain + sell unto the said Edwards a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying + being in the County of Anson on Thompson Creek. Beginning at a stake in the sate line + runs No. 19 Wt. 40 chains + 20 links to 2 pines + post oak pointers thence along a line of marked trees No. 79 Wt. 20 chains + 20 links to a pine stump 3 pines pointer then So. 32 Wt. 13 chains + 90 links to a stake one red oak + dogwood pointer then West 15 chains to a corner about thirty links below the mine hole thence So. 16 chains + fifty links crofsing Thompson Creek to a stake on the bank of said creek thence Et. 8 chains + 30 links to a dead pine corner then So. 9 Et. 16 chains to a stake one red oak post oak and a parcel of saplings pointers and to be in the State line thence with said line No. 88 ½ degrees East 42 chains crofsing said creek to the beginning containing one hundred + fifty three acres more or lefs. To have and to hold said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances to him the said John G. Edwards his heirs + assigns forever and we the said heirs at law of William P. Jackson do far ourselves + our heirs covenant + agree with the said John G., Edwards his heirs + assigns to warrant + forever defend the title of the said tract of land to the said John G. Edwards against the lawfully claims of all persons whatsoever. In witness whereof we the said Mary Jackson A. M. Lowry Alex May Stephen Jackson + Benjamin Jackson have here unto set our hand + Seals this day + year above written. Signed sealed + delivered in presence of

The above deed is a very interesting document and the genealogical data it contains presents a lot of unanswered questions.

The named Heirs–at-law are:

• Mary Jackson (wife of Henry A. Jackson),
• A. M. Lowery (husband of Henrietta Jackson, daughter of Henry A. Jackson),
• Alexander May (husband of Susannah, daughter of Henry A. Jackson),
• Stephen Jackson (Col. Stephen, son of Henry A. Jackson,)
• Benjamin A. Jackson (son of Henry A. Jackson)

So the 153 acres tract of land has been left by William P. Jackson to the above named children of Henry Andrew Jackson.

• Is William P. Jackson their Uncle and a brother to Henry Andrew Jackson?

Who is William P. Jackson? This Land Deed (Deed Book 11, page 438) is the only known document that mentions William P. Jackson.
