Land Deed~Peter Kepley, Sr. and Wife Elisabeth to Martin Dry

Today’s posting is a Land Deed whereby Peter Kepley, Sr. and wife Elisabeth are selling a Two hundred and Thirty three acres and a quarter tract of land to his son-in law Johan Martin Dry. This land is part of an original land grant conveyed to Peter Keply by patent Bearing Date the twenty sixth day of November A.D. 1789.

Dry is the angelized version of the German surname Duerr/Durr/Derr. The Derr’s and Kepley/Keppel/Kepple’s knew each other in the Old Country (Württemberg, Germany) and in Gosenhoppen, Pennsylvania. Margaretha Elizabeth Derr, a sister to Charles Derr/Dry, married Henry Keppel. Their son, John Martin Keppel, borne 21 August 1757 is listed on the same birth page as children of Killian Kepley. Johan Martin Derr and his wife are sponsors to the  birth and baptism of John Martin Keppel, borne 21 August 1757 in Gossenhopen, Pennsylvania.

It’s Family Time~The John Peter Kepley Family

John Peter Kepley was the fist born son of Killian Kepley and his unknown wife. From the minutes of the Organ Lutheran Church, Rowan County, NC, we know that John Peter Kepley was borne on 9 March 1795 and baptized on 29 May 1795. His sponsor was his grandfather Peter Kepley.  

Let’s STOP a minute for some Clarification.

There are many on-line trees claiming that John Killian Keppel/Kepley married Sarah Krawl/Crowell.

It just isn’t so. I have not found a single document that names the wife of Killian Kepley.

The Marriage Licensee for Sarah Krawl shows that she married John Keppel/Kepley and that Killian Keppel/Kepley were their bondsman. Killian Keppel/Kepley had an older brother John, born 27 Jan 1757 and I say its this John Keppel/Kepley that married Sarah Krawl on 10 May 1798.  

Plus, as stated in the first paragraph, Killian Kepley first borne son was John Peter borne 9 March 1795 a full 3 years before Sarah Krawl’s  marriage in May 1798.

Now back to the family of John Peter Kepley.

John Peter Kepley married Rachel Simison on 9 April 1821. To this union was borne 9 children before the death of their father sometime about but before August 1849.

In 1850 Rowan County, we find Rachel Kepley, a widow, with 7 children still at home. Two daughters are missing from the Census having moved out and married.

On 10 June 1858, Rachel Simison Kepley wrote her Last Will and Testament. It seems almost certain that Rachel had a premonition that her life would not be long lived. The Last Will and testament is the last record we have of Rachel's life in Rowan County.

She named all her children except her oldest daughter in her Will. Not Named was Anna, borne abt 1823, married Tobias Goodman. It is believe that Anna Goodman died shortly before 13 November 1852. On that date, Tobias Goodman married Rosa Mariah Crotzer.

John Peter Kepley and Rachael Simison had the following children:

        i.    Anna Kepley, born abt 1823; married Tobias Goodman, 14 Mar 1842, Rowan County, North Carolina; died bef 13 Nov 1852.
         ii.    Nancy Mariella Kepley, born abt 1825; married Daniel Harkey, 1 Aug 1861.
         iii.    Milas Alexander Kepley, born 1 Nov 1825, Davidson County, North Carolina; married Margaret Lyerly, 21 Jul 1850; died 19 Aug 1862, North Carolina.
         iv.    MaryAnn Kepley, born abt 1831; married Samuel Canup; died May 1880, Rowan County, North Carolina.
         v.    Jacob Nathaniel Kepley, born 25 Apr 1832, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Delia Loretta Johnson, 26 Feb 1856, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 26 Feb 1888, Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.
         vi.    Jane Catherine Kepley, born 29 Aug 1834, Gold Hill, Rowan, North Carolina; married Noah Canup, 20 Dec 1851; died Oct 1909, Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.
         vii.    Crissa Lavina Kepley, born abt 1837; married James J. Eller, 5 Feb 1866; married Jacob C. Brown, 23 Feb 1871, Rowan, North Carolina.
         viii.    Robert Warner Kepley, born 21 Apr 1839, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Sarah Louvina Holshouser, 17 Mar 1861, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 24 Jul 1872, Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina.
         ix.    George C. Kepley was born about 1843. He died on 16 Sep 1862 at the age of 19. He served in the military.

The Last Will and Testament of Rachel Simison Kepley

On 9 April 1821, in Rowan County, North Carolina, Rachael Simison and John Peter Kepley were married.

John Peter Kepley died sometime shortly before August 1849. His probate file in Rowan County, North Carolina shows that he was deceased and the foregoing inventory was an inventory of his estate.

The 1850 Census for Rowan County, NC shows Rachel a widow caring for her children.  

On 10 June 1858, Rachel Simison Kepley wrote her Last Will and Testament. It is belied that she died in the early part of 1859. Neither her, nor her husband is listed in the Federal Census Mortality Schedules for 1850 and 1860. No actual death date has been found for John Peter Kepley or his his wife, Rachel Simison Kepley.

Rowan County, NC    Knowing that it is appointed to all men to die and in order to make some disposition and management  I publish this to be my last will and Testament.
1st. I will that my body be decently interred in a Christian like manner. 
2nd. I will and bequeath after all my just debts be paid to my my <sic> daughter Crifsa Lavina 2 beds & bedsteads & ten dollars in money. To my son Robert Warner, one Bridle & Saddle one hog, Sythe & Cradle & grafs Sythe, & ten dollars in money & one Shot gun. To my Son George Calvin, one hogs 1 Sythe & Cradle, one grafs Sythe, and ten dollars in money and also one third part of the growing crop to be divided equally between my daughter Crifsy L., and my two sons Robert W. & George C. 
3rd. This quote is exactly as found in the WILL and I have no idea what the Comments after Nancy means “(a name not known)”.

It’s Family Time~The John N. Dry Family

John N. Dry was born abt 1789, a son of Johann Martin Dry and Catherine Keppel. He was their 2nd born son and their 3rd borne child. John N. Dry had 7 siblings; 5 sisters and 3 brothers. 

Sophie Barrier was borne about 1809. Her parents are said to be John (Barger) Barrier and Catherina “Caty” Lingle Barrier; but, I have not found proof necessary to confirmed this information.  

John N. Dry did marry Sophie Barrier on 30 April 1836 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Very little information has been found thus far on the John N. Dry family. On Ancestry we find the family listed in the 1850 Census for Cabarrus County, North Carolina, the 1860 Census for Independence, Arkansas; copies of the marriage licensee between John N. Dry and Sophie Barrier along with a NC Land Grant for 31 acres on the waters of Buffalo Creek.

We know that John, Sophie and the children left North Carolina, after the 1850 census, moved to Big Bottom, Independence, Arkansas. We find them there in 1860.

DRY, male, age 71, born in NC; Sophia DRY, female, age 50, born in NC; John W. DRY, male, age 27, born in NC and Mary MATHEW, female, age 14, born in NC.

After moving to Independence County, Arkansas, we find in the County Land records that John N. Dry purchased 4 sections of land totaling 210 acres in January and February 1857 from two different individuals (DB M:515 and M:516).

It is not known where their Son William Rufus Dry was in 1860 or 1870 but in 1880 he is married and living in Milam, Texas.

I have not found a single record related to John N. Dry or his wife Sophie Barrier Dry after the 1860 Census enumeration. 

John N. Dry and Sophie Barrier had the following children:

• Mary Mathew DRY, b. abt. 1846

Marriage of Johann Kepple & Sarah Krawl

 John Keppel was borne 27 January 1757 in Gosenhoppen, Pennsylvania. he was the son of Peter Keppel, Sr and his wife Anna Elizabeth Grobb.

At some point in the mid 1770's the Kepples migrated to what was then known as Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  At about the same time my “DORR” ancestors migrated into the area and anglicized their name to be DRY. 

On 10 May 1798, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, John Kepple married Sarah Krawl/Crowell.

Mystery Monday~When Did Dempsey Honeycutt (176?–aft Sept. 1849) Pass Away

Dempsey Honeycutt has a large double tombstone of which he shares with his wife. Both show death date but the source of these dates are unknow to me. I have searched for many years and the best I can do with proving the death of Dempsey Honeycutt can be found in the text of this blog. I was quite surprised that the local churches, in their minutes, did not record the death dates of their parishioners.

Dempsey Honeycutt was alive on 26 Sept. 1849 but he is not listed in the 1850 Mortality Census nor the regular population Census.

The last Land Deed transaction executed by Dempsey Honeycutt transpired on 13 Apr 1844 in Stanly County, North Carolina (DB 3, pg 358).

But what does period documents tell us about Dempsey’s life and death? 

Dempsy Honeycutt was a God fearing man who regularly attended church. In his early years he was a member of Meadow Creek Baptist Church. He appeared regularly in the minuets of the church as early as August 1816. His wife Rutha Honeycutt appears in minutes as early as May 1811. 

At the June 1825 Meadow Creek Conference Sister Rutha Honeycutt was received by letter from the Bear Creek Church.

At the November 1825 Meadow Creek Conference brother Dempsy Honeycutt was received by letter from the Bear Creek Church.

In the January Conference 1845 – The Church declared an unfellowship with Nathan Green and Demcy Honeycutt for their not hearing [adhering] to the church. 

At March Conference 1847 Demcy Honeycutt [was] restored to fellowship again.

In the Meadow Creek Church Minutes we find the following list of members on 20 August 1849.

There were two Honeycutt’s; one was Dempsey Honeycutt and the other was Sinthy Honeycutt widow of Reuben George Honeycutt.

In the original Bear Creek Minutes images 66 & 67 is the last mention of Dempsey Huneycutt in any church minutes or any other document of any kind.

On page 66 – Commencing on Saturday before the 4th Lord’s Day in [23] September 1849 The Meadow Creek association met with Elder G. Little delivering a sermon from Titus 2nd Chapter 14th verse. On the next page (67) present at this meeting was Hezekiah Hearne, D. Little and Demcy Honeycutt representatives from the Meadow Creek Church.

There is no mention of Demcy Honeycutt in any church minutes after his attendance at the 23 September 1849 meeting with Elder G. Little of the Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Association.

We have two instances whereby Demsy Honeycutt is alive and well one dated 20 August 1849 and the other dated 23 September 1849.

Demcy Honeycutt died between the meeting (23 Sept. 1849) and the enumeration of the 1850 Census for Stanly County, NC in  mid-1850.

The only mention I have found of the the death of Rutha Honeycutt is also included in the Meadow Creek Church minutes but DO NOT have the precise date shown on her tombstone. As a matter of fact, the page on which she is listed as deceased is not dated.

I think the death of Dempsey Honeycutt and his wife, Rutha, is still yet to be determined.

It’s Family Time~The James Roller Family

Genealogical research in Chesterfield County, South Caroline is very demanding and complicated. Pre-Civil War records within the county are almost non-existence.  General Sherman, of Civil War fame, made it his priority to march to Chesterfield County and to burn and destroy every record, book and ledger on file that he could lay hands on. 

Partially, because of his actions; little is known of the James Roller family. James Roller appears in 4 Census (1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860) in Chesterfield County then he and his entire family ceases to exists in any documents. The wife of James Roller was a young lady by the name of Martha “Patsy” Brock. I’m aware that the Brock moved to Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi but I haven’t found of yet any indication that James and Martha Brock Roller moved from Chesterfield after the 1860 Census was enumerated. 

While there is a James Roller enumerated in the 1830 Census, his household does not exactly lined up with what is known about James & Martha’s family. The other 3 censuses (1840-1850-1860) all match the James & Martha Roller household.

James Roller was borne about 1795 per the censuses. His parents are believed to be Elisha Hardwick Roller and Catherine "Katey" Quick; but, this information is yet to be confirmed.

He married Martha ‘Patsy” Brock about 1835. This “marriage year” is based on the reported age of the first known child Martha Roller, borne 1834.  

The composition of this family in 1850 and 1860 was:

We can see that there is not much change in the family composition from 1850 to 1860. All traces of this family vanishes after the 1860 Census.

Sarah Atkinson, age 18 is an unknown. She could be a daughter but a search for Sarah Atkinson, borne 1842, only returns this one Census – the 1860 Chesterfield County, SC Census.

Martha ‘Patsy” Brock was born in 1800. Her parents are unknown; but, it is my belief that James Valentine Brock (13 Sept 1749-15 Dec 1847) is her father. James Valentine Brock was killed in an accidental house fire on 15 December 1847.

Note that Ben Brock, age 64, is listed within the Roller household in 1860. Ben Brock is the brother of Martha Brock.

Agreement Between Margaret Polk Hagler & Peter Hagler

Peter Hagler, b. about 1777 and died 14 February 1852 was at one point in his life the husband of my 1st Cousin 5X removed Sarah “Sally” Dry. He married Sarah Dry, as his 2nd wife, on 22 November 1813 in Cabarrus County, Alabama. After the birth of two known children, Sarah died sometime around 1816. He then married Margaret ‘Peggy’ Polk (Subject of this post) as his 3rd wife.

Union County} Whereas an actual Separation heretofore been made, between Peter Haglar and Margaret his wife, and whereas sd Margaret has filed a bill of Equity in the county aforesaid against her Said husband for divorce & alimony, which Suit is now pending, and whereas John Polk late of Said County departed this life in the year 1846 Intestate leaving sd Margaret one of his distributive and heirs at Law and whereas the said Peter and Margaret are desirous of compromising the Suit aforesaid by Settling the same upon an Equitable      and whereas for the purpose of So doing the Said Peter hath this day entered Into an Indenture by which he has conveyed to one Aaron Little of the county aforesaid, all the interest & Estate whatsoever, he has by virtue of his marital rights in the Lands descended to Said Margaret as one of the heirs at Law of the said John Polk to hold the same in trust for her Sole Separate & Exclusive use; and in addition thereto hath Ordered & directed the Administrators of said John Polk to pay over to Said Margaret one half of her distributive Share of the personally in Said Estate & take her receipt therefor.~~~~
Now for her consideration of the premises & the further consideration of the Sum of Five Dollars the said Margaret in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. The Said Margaret does hereby stipulate, covenant & agree to & with the said Peter Hagler, his heirs, Executors or Administrators that she will release (p. 529) and does hereby release, acquit and discharge ( all claims or claims, action or right of actions, that She now has or hereafter May have upon Said Peter for alimony or Support or in the Event she should survive Said Peter that she does hereby release, acquit, & discharge any Estate that he may have time surviving of any claim or claims, action, or right of action for any portion of his either personal or real estate). In witness whereof the said Margaret Hagler hath hereunto set her hand and affixed her Seal, this the 12th day of May AD 1848.~~

This is an important document in the Life of Peter Haglar especially concerning his 3rd marriage. 

In 1840, Margaret is alone with her 3 children in Anson County, North Carolina. Sometime before this Margaret and Peter split up and he moved in 1835 to Barbour County, Alabama where his Last Will is recorded (February 1852).

Maybe Peter and Margaret were OK with the settlement above or maybe they were divorced and I haven’t located the document. Regardless, it was enough for Peter Hagler to seek out and marry as his 4th wife, before his demise, a young lady named Sarah. This marriage took place in Alabama between 1850 and February 1852. 

From the Last Will of Peter Hagler written 2 days before his death:

“1st I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Sarah, my present place of residence the plantation where I now reside...”

Note: There was a Sarah Cooley in his 1850 household.

In Item #6 of his Will he left -- To my first wife (Margaret) who lives in the State of North Carolina,
I give and bequeath to her the sum of Twenty Dollars ($20)

Sally Dry Haglar died about 1816.

Peter Haglar died 15 February 1852.

Sally Dry Haglar is my 1st Cousin 5X removed

It’s Family Time~The William Washington Eddins Family

William Washington Eddins was borne amidst the Civil War on 3 September 1864. He was the son of Joseph Columbus Eddins and his wife Matilda Ann Tice. He was the eighth of eleven children borne to Joseph and Matilda Eddins. William Washington had 3 brothers and 7 sisters. He was a farmer. 

Martha Previtt was also born amidst the Civil War on 5 Sep 1863 in Anson County, North Carolina. Martha was a daughter of John Washington Privett and Elizabeth “Bette” Davis. She also had 10 siblings; four sisters and six brothers.

Martha E. Previtte and William Washington Eddins were married about 1882. All their children were borne in Chesterfield County, South Carolina; but, in the early 1900’s they moved to Anson County, North Carolina where the children were raised to adulthood.

Martha and William W. Eddins were enumerated in the 1900 census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. They then moved to North Caroline and are enumerated in the 1910-1920 Census for Anson County, North Carolina.

William Washington Eddins and Martha E. Previtte had the following children:

i. Infant Eddins, was born and buried on 2 Sep 1888 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Fanny J. Eddins, born 29 Jul 1889, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Hezekiah Smith; died 23 Nov 1965, Rocky Mount, Nash, North Carolina.
iii. Ila Violet Eddins, born 7 Oct 1891, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jasper Jackson Watts; died 23 Jul 1971, Concord, Cabarrus, North Carolina.
iv. Henry Thomas Eddins, born 3 Sep 1893, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Sally Teal; died 20 Sep 1956, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
v. William Benjamin Eddins, born 12 Oct 1898, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jessie Viola Kiker, 1920; died Apr 1975.

William Washington Eddins died on 20 May 1924 at the age of 60 in Anson County, North Carolina. He was buried on 21 May 1924 at Zoar Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Martha died on 21 Apr 1934 at the age of 70 in Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina. She was buried beside her husband on 23 Apr 1934 at Zoar Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Martha Previtt Eddins is my Great Grandaunt. She was 2 years younger than her older sister, Mary Hulda Previtt, my Great Grandmother.
