It’s Family Time~The Lewis Huneycutt Family

Lewis Huneycutt was borne about 1801 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. His parents and siblings are unknown partially due to loss of records from Courthouse fires.

Montgomery County was formed from Anson County in 1779. Since its inception it has suffered three (3) fires. In 1835 and 1840 fires destroyed many records. The Courthouse burned again in 1886 with most records saved but disorganized.

There’s a lot of speculation on the parentage of Lewis with the most prevalent being that he is the son of Ambrose Hunnicutt/Huneycutt. But, its just that – speculation. No proof has been found that would prove his lineage as required by the Genealogical Proof Standard.

At age 23, Lewis Huneycutt married Mary Ann “Polly” Rowland, age 22. The marriage took place about 1824, probably in Montgomery County. No marriage document has been found for Lewis and Polly but I have based this marriage year (1824) on the birth of their known first born – Alexander Huneycutt, borne 7 Aug 1825.

Lewis Huneycutt and Mary Ann Rowland had the following children:

        i.    Alexander Huneycutt, born 7 Aug 1825, Montgomery County, North Carolina; married Sarah Jane Charlotte Crayton, 8 Feb 1849, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 3 May 1862, Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina.
ii.    Martha Huneycutt, born abt 1828; married Jacob Sides, 10 Jun 1854, Stanly County, North Carolina; died aft 1880.
iii.    Rebecca A. Huneycutt, born 15 Oct 1828; married Daniel S. Sides, 25 May 1854, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 5 Jun 1889.
iv.    Rutha Huneycutt was born about 1834. No record of Ruth after 1860 Census.
        v.    Henry Arnold Huneycutt, born Jan 1835, North Carolina; married Julia Malinda Hinson, 20 Feb 1867, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 20 Jan 1905, Stanly County, North Carolina.
vi.    Jane Elizabeth Huneycutt, born 4 Jun 1843, Yancey County, North Carolina; married Daniel Hosea Curlee; died 13 Nov 1907, Catawba County, North Carolina.
vii.    James Allen Huneycutt, born 16 Nov 1845; married Julia Ann Crayton, 7 Aug 1873; died 27 Dec 1922, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
viii.    Mary Huneycutt, born 17 Jun 1849, Stanly County, North Carolina; married John Eli Brattain, 1868; died 18 Jun 1926, Davidson, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
ix.    Robert Huneycutt was born about 1856. No record after 1860 Census.

Lewis Huneycutt died sometime before 1870. No record of his death has been found.

In 1880, Mary Ann “Polly” Rowland Huneycutt is living in the household of her daughter Martha Sides, widow of Jacob Sides who died in the Civil War. She died after this Census and no record of her death has been found.
