The Death of Eunice “Nicey” Huneycutt, 2nd Wife of Martin Irenus Huneycutt

Martin Irenus Huneycutt was born 14 December 1835 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He was the last of six boys borne into the family before the arrival of three sisters. He had five older brothers and 3 younger sisters. His parents were Marcus I. “Mark” Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry. Martin, like his father, was a farmer.

Early in the Civil War after enlisting into 42nd Reg't NC Infantry on 9 April 1862, Martin and Elmira Adeline Hinson, daughter of Sampson Hinson and Mary Parker was wedded that same year. Their known first borne arrived in April 1864. A marriage Licensee/Certificate has not been found. After the birth of four children, all daughters, Elmira Adeline Hinson Huneycutt, passed away  at some point between the birth of Bessie Jane, 15 February 1873 and 24 June 1880.  

After the death of of his first wife, Elmira Adeline Hinson, Martin married about 1880 Eunice “Nicey” Huneycutt. Eunice Huneycutt had previously been married to Alexander Simmons. Her parents were Gabriel  W. Huneycutt and Jane “Jincy” Rowland.  The year of marriage (1880) is based on information obtained from the 1900 Census  for Big Lick, Stanly County where Martin and Nicey reported they had been Married 20 years, 4 children, 4 living. The children are from his first marriage. Martin and Nicey did not have any children from their union.

Martin Irenus Huneycutt died on 12 April 1918. Before his death he spent his waning years in controversary with his siblings and their offspring's over a 200 acres farm own by his father, Mark I. Huneycutt.  Settlement was made in Superior Court. March Term 1911.

3- It is further adjudged and decreed that the Defendant, M. I. Huneycutt, is the owner in fee and entitled to the possession of the following described tract of land in controversy in this action said tract of land situate in Stanly County, N. C., in Furr Township, adjoining the lands of R. S. Smith, George Crayton heirs, C. Crayton, Frank Whitley, L. G. Brattian, I. J. Barbee, and N. F. Barbee, known as the Mark I. Huneycutt, lands, and bounded and described as follows:

Eunice “Nicey” Huneycutt, died on 19 March 1922 in Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina.

  Mrs. Eunice Huneycutt, widow of the late Irenus Huneycutt, who prior to the death of her husband resided in Western Stanly, but who has been residing in Albemarle for some time, died Sunday, at the ripe old age of seventy eight years. The funeral was conducted at Canton Church Monday at 4 o'clock P. M. The deceased was the mother of our townsman, Mr. John Henry Simmons, of West Albemarle. She was well known and had a host of friends throughout the Western part of the county.
