Charlie Brock~World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

 Charlie Benjamin Brock was born in 1893, a son of Pleasant “Pleas” Elmore Brock and Nancy Jane Davis. Most records and his tombstone shows his birth date to be 16 July 1893. The only exception, I have found, is the WWI Draft Card which shows his birth to be 22 July 1893.

World War I began in Europe in 1914 after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand (28 June 1914). The United States entered the war in 1917 to protect passenger  and merchant ships from German submarine attacks.  The draft was instituted by passage of the Selective Service Act of 1917 that required all men between the ages of 21 to 45 to register for military service.

We can see by the date on the card below that Charlie Brock registered for service on 5 June 1917. 

Charlie was a married man. He had married a young lady by the name of Lora W. Brock sometime around 1910 or maybe early 1911. Their first born arrived on 29 November 1911.

When Charlie registered for the draft he reported that he had a wife and 4 children. What the card doesn’t tell you is that Charlie’s wife Lora with pregnant with their son who was born after 4 June 1917. An exact day and month has not been found but we know if was after 4 June.

I have found no records that shows Charlie Benjamin Davis being drafted and suspect he was not because of his family situation. 

Charlie and Lora had a family of seven children; 5 sons and 2 daughters. Lora passed away 16 June 1958. Charlie passed away on 2 February 1962.   

 Charlie Benjamin Brock is my 1st Cousin twice Removed. 

Mystery Monday~When Did William Blakeney Davis, Sr. Die?

 The loss of records in Chesterfield County, during the Civil War, makes it very difficult sometime to accurately document the lives of our ancestors from this area. My genealogical database contains way more general dates than I so desire. I’m tired of using “before, after, about, between” to document marriages, births and deaths. For instance, let take a look at William Blakeney Davis, Sr.

William Blakeney Davis, Sr. is a son of William Davis and Julia Thurman. Based on the 1860 population census for Chesterfield county, William Blakeney Davis was age 37, making his birth year to be 1823. My genealogical database has his birth year as about 1823, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. William Blakeney has not been found in 1850 Census. He was not in his father’s household. We also find in the 1860 Census that William Blakeney has married and has a growing family. Research shows that he married Mary Jane Martin abt 1855. This date again is an estimated date based on the age of the oldest child in the household, G. W. M. Davis, male, age 3. George Washington Martin Davis was actually born 1 November 1856. William B. and Mary Jane may have married as late as Jan-Feb 1856.

William B. and Mary Jane had an additional 8 children between 1860 and 1875 even though William Blakeney enlisted and served in the Civil War. There is a three year break in children between 1862 and 1865. He was a member of  Company “E”, 21st SC INF CSA. 

Mary Jane (Martin) Davis died 15 September 1885 leaving four sons and a daughter under the age of 21. Her youngest, a daughter was age 10. The other six children were age 21 or older.

It is not known when William Blakeney Davis died. We know that on 1 November 1892 he executed a land deed to Owen A. Davis, selling him 50 acres of land on Bear Creek for the sum of four hundred dollar. Until another document is found all we can say is that William Blakeney Davis died after 1 Nov 1892.

Obituary Sunday~Death of John Crawford Bethea, Jr.

John Crawford Bethea, Jr. was born 2 February 1861, a son of John Crawford Bethea, Sr. and Sarah Ann Davis. He married Marietta Georgia “Hettie Bethea daughter of William Walter Bethea about 1885. To this union were born seven children; two sons and five daughters. John Crawford Bethea died 30 July 1903.

Dillon, July 30.---Mr. John C. Bethea died this morning at 8 o’clock, and while from his long invalidism it was not unexpected still the announcement of his death this morning was a great shock to our town. Mr. Bethea was a native of Marion county, 42 years of age, and up to six years ago lived on his plantation near Latta. At that time he built a beautiful home here and while his physical condition did not allow him to take an active part personally in the growth and development of the town, yet his was a familiar figure upon our streets, and up to within two year of his death he was “down town” with his friend, from whom he always met a cordial greeting for they loved and esteemed him for his worth.
Until his health failed Mr. Bethea was a planter, and a very successful one. His was one of the most valuable places in this section, a portion of which he sold to the Messrs. Manning for $23,000 only a few months ago.
He was a lineal descendant of one of two brothers who came from Virginia about the year 1735, one of whom settled on Buck swamp, the other on Sweat swamp, and being among the earliest settlers, the family of Bethea became one of the most influential in Marion county. By blood and marriage he was connected with nearly every family of prominence in the Peedee section. He leaves one brother, Col. Ed Bethea of Latta; a wife, sister of Dr. J. F. Bethea, and seven children.  
His remains, by his request, will be interred at Mt. Holly cemetery at 10 o’clock tomorrow, the stores all closing as a mark of respect to the deceased.
For many years a member of the Methodist church, he held, until recently, his membership at Dothan, the church of his ancestors. The funeral will be conducted from the Methodist church at this place and his body laid away with Masonic honors.

The Wilson Matthias "Tise" Furr Family

Wilson Matthias "Tise" Furr was born on 18 Jul 1804, a son of Paul Furr, Jr. and
Rosanna Peck of Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He died of Asthma in March 1860 according to the 1860 Mortality Scheduled. His tombstone shows his death date to be 16 March 1860 at the age of 55 years 5 months and 28 days. NOTE: His Birthdate or age is wrong; If you calculate using his age (55y 5m 28d) and death date of 16 March 1860 you will find that if calculates to a BIRTHDATE of 17 September 1804.

Wilson Matthias "Tise" Furr and Mary "Polly" Page were married on 17 Jan 1829 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Mary "Polly" Page, daughter of Uriah Page and Grace, was born in 1804 in North Carolina.

 

Wilson Matthias Furr and Mary Page had the following children:

 

                  i.  Elizabeth Caroline Furr, born Apr 1823; married Solomon Pless; died 1907.

                 ii.  Malinda Lovina Furr, born 19 Mar 1826, Virginia; married James Wade Love, abt 1845; died 6 Oct 1863, Stanly County, North Carolina.

                iii.  Wilson Mathias Furr Jr. was born on 24 Mar 1829. He died on 17 Jun 1864 at the age of 35. Wilson served in the military Company "D", 28th NC Infantry.

               iv.  Israel Jackson Furr was born on 29 Apr 1832. He died on 24 Feb 1904 at the age of 71.

                 v.  Lawson Alexander Furr, born abt 1834; married Martha Green, 27 Feb 1853, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; died 6 Dec 1864, Elmira Prison, Elmira, New York.

                vi.  Levi Lee Furr, born abt 1836; married Elizabeth Smith, 20 Jan 1853, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 10 Feb 1915, Furr, Stanly, North Carolina.

               vii.  John J. Furr was born on 12 Aug 1838. He died on 10 Aug 1862 at the age of 23.

              viii.  Ephraim H. Furr, born abt 1840; married Martha I Barbie, 18 Dec 1859, Stanly, North Carolina; died bef 25 Mar 1863. Ephraim enlisted 29 July 1861 and was discharged 31 Sept. 1861. His early discharge and death are most likely related.  

                ix.  Mary Serena Furr, born abt 1842; married Thomas Irvine Love, 9 Oct 1865; died 23 Aug 1866, Stanly County, North Carolina.

                x.  Allen M. Furr was born about 1844. He died KILLED IN ACTION-CIVIL WAR on 13 Dec 1862 at the age of 18.

If you look closely, you will see that Mary (Page) Furr lost her husband in March 1860 and 5 of her seven sons in or during the Civil War. Only Israel Jackson and Levi Lee remained of her seven sons.

Mary “Polly” Furr died about 15 Feb 1866 at the age of 62 in Stanly County, North Carolina. This receipt from her estate shows the purchase of her Coffin on 15 February 1866.

Redux: Who was the Second Wife of James Robert Ervin?

James Robert Ervin was born 7 Nov 1788, a son of Col. John Ervin and Jane Witherspoon of Marion District, South Carolina. On 3 February 1813 he married Elizabeth Powe, age 14, a daughter of Erasmus Powe and Esther Ellerbe. After the birth of seven children's, Elizabeth (Powe) Ervin died on 8 June 1832.

The question is – Who did James Robert Powe marry after the death of his wife Elizabeth Powe?

Harry Alexander Davis in his book “:The Davis family (Davies and David) in Wales and America : genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania” page 135 & 233.

He [William Davis] left one married daughter in Marion Dist. at the time of his removal, i. e. Ann Dozier O'Brien, who later married James Ervin. [pg 135]

O'Brien died sine prole date not known and Ann married (2) Major James Ervin of Darlington Dist., S. C. about 1832. [pg 233]

So, Mr. Harry Alexander Davis says that Ann Dozier Davis, daughter of William Davis (1869-bef Jan 1832) and Mary Davis married [Stothard] O’Brien and James Robert Davis.

Opposing that statement is the “Vereen Researchers” who state that Ann G. Vereen is the daughter of William Vereen b. 1775 and his wife Eliza P. Wilkes.

The following children are known William b.1800/O5?d.1858/60?m. Mar 1828 to Mary Costello Donnelly b. 1814?, Mary Eliza wife of John D. Magill of All Saints Parish and Ann G. wife of Ervin James of Marion County.

I have found no proof that Ann G. Vereen is the daughter of William Vereen b. 1775 and his wife Eliza P. Wilkes. Conversely, I have found no proof that Ann Dozier Davis was married between her marriage to Stothard O’Brien and her said marriage to James Robert Davis.

The Col. John Ervin Family Bible says he married Ann G. Vereen. Note: I have not seen the original Bible pages only a transcript.

Tombstone Thursday~Pvt. Lawson Alexander Furr

FURR, LAUSON ALEX, Private

Resided in Stanly County where he enlisted at age 28, March 17, 1862. Captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Paroled and transferred to Aiken’s Landing, James River, Virginia, where he was received on July 12, 1862, for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken’s Landing on August 5, 1862. Returned to duty prior to January 1, 1863. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2-3, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred to Elmira, New York, August 10, 1864. Died at Elmira on December 6, 1864 of “pneumonia.” [NC Troops, 8:223]

Lawson Alexander Furr, was born about 1834, a son of Wilson Matthias Furr and Mary Page. Lawson was one of four sons that Matthias and Mary saw off to War to never return home. He was twice captured, paroled once and died in Elmira Prison on 6 December 1864 of pneumonia.

Lawson’s father Matthias died in August 1860 of Asthma. The loss of four sons in the war must have been heart wrenching for Mary “Polly” (Page) Furr and for her daughter-in-law. 

Lawson also left surviving his wife, Martha Green, whom he married 27 Feb. 1853 and two children; a son and a daughter.

 

Lawson Alexander Furr is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Sion Page Estate, 1885

Sion Page was born about 1807 in North Carolina. He was a son of Uriah Page and his wife Grace, aka Gracey [Maiden name unknown]. Sion was a farmer. About 1828, he married a young lady by the name of Nancy [LNU]. Since no marriage document has been found, there is no known source document that gives her maiden name.

Sion and Nancy raised a family of nine children on a 160 acres farm in Stanly County; Their family consisted of three sons and six daughters.

On 30 October 1885, Sion Page executed his Last Will and Testament. Sion Page death date is unknown but we  know he died before 12 April 1887, the date of the document presented below. There are 287 on-line trees for Sion Page on Ancestry, I saw little evidence of research but a plentiful supply of misinformation. According to those trees Sion died in October 1885, 1887 and before 1896. Also, most of these trees has a first name of Simon for Sion Page. After 46 years of research I haven’t yet found their source document. All my documents shows my 3rd Great Grandfather to be Sion Page.

            A paper purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Sion Page, deceased, is exhibited before me the undersigned Clerk of Superior Court for said County, by W. A. Hartsell, the executor Therein named, and the due execution thereof by the said Sion Page, by the oath and Examination of Conrad Craton and G. N. Craton the subscribing witnefses thereto: Who being duly sworn doth depose and say, and each for himself deposeth and saith That he is a Subscribing witness to the paper writing now shown him purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Sion Page  That the said Sion Page in the presence of the deponent Subscribed his name at the end of said paper writing which is now shown as aforesaid, and which have date of the 20th day of October 1885.
        And the Deponent further saith, That the said Sion Page the Testator aforesaid did, at the time of subscribing his name as aforesaid, declare the said paper writing so subscribed by him, and exhibited, to be his last Will and Testament, and this deponent did thereupon Subscribe his name at the end of said Will, as an attesting Witness Thereto, and at the request and in the presence of said Testator,
    And this deponent further saith that at the said time when the said testator subscribed his name to the said last Will as aforesaid, and at the time of the deponent subscribing their names as attesting Witnefses thereto , as aforesaid, the said Sion Page was of Sound Mind ands memory, of full age to execute a Will, and was not under any restraint to the knowledge, information or belief of this deponent. And further these deponents say not.

The Life of Dorinda Adair

 Dorinda Adair was born about 1820 in Alabama. She was a daughter of Zadock Adair and his wife Sarah Wood.

At age 16, Dorinda Adair married John R. Leath, a local merchant on 17 December 1836 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

This marriage was short lived and Dorinda divorced John R. Leath on 20 December 1841.

After her divorce, Dorinda married her lifetime mate Epps Rivers Brown son of John H. Brown and Sarah Rivers. I haven’t found a marriage licensee or announcement for this marriage but believe it took place about 1842.  The reason for this is three-fold. First, she was still married until 20 December 1841. Second, on 2 Mar 1844, her father Zadock Adair executed a “Deed of Gift” to his daughter Dorinda:

 “for and in consideration of the natural love and affection for which I have and bear unto my Daughter Dorinda aforesaid Brown wife of E. R. Brown of the second part” (DB_D:17-18).

Third, Epps and Dorinda‘s known first born, a daughter, arrived on 19 April 1843. They most likely were married about July 1842.  

Between 1845 and 1847, Epps and Dorinda moved from Lauderdale County, Mississippi to Union County, Arkansas. Their first two children were born in Mississippi and the next eight children were born in Arkansas. In 1855, Epps father John H. Brown died in Lauderdale, Mississippi and his Mother, Sarah (Rivers) Brown moved to Arkansas. She can be found in the  household of her son, Epps Rivers Brown in the 1860 and 1870 Union County Federal Census.

In 1880, Epps and Dorinda still had a house full of children while in their Golden Years.

Epps Rivers Brown died in 1881. It is not know when Dorinda passed away, only that it occurred between 1880 and 1900. No tombstones or obituary have been found for them. However, this short snippet was found for Judge Epps Rivers Brown. 

Judge Epps Brown, who died recently in Union county, was a native of Georgia, born in 1810.[Arkansas Democrat, Little Rock, Arkansas, 26 Jul 1881, Tue, Page 4, column 4]

It’s Family Time~The Two Families of William Riley Eddins

 William Riley Eddins was born about 1793 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was a son of William Eddins and his first wife, Nancy [maiden name
unknown].

In 1812, at the age of about 19, he served in the WAR of 1812. After released from the military he made his way to Conecuh County, Alabama by 1814. By 1820, when the Census was taken, he had moved to Wilcox County, Alabama. There he met and married his first wife, Nancy Manning, sometime before February 1826.

To this union was born four children before Nancy’s untimely death in March of 1840.

William Riley Eddins and Nancy Manning had the following children:

i. Abner W. Eddins, born 10 Feb 1826; married Christianna A. Jolliff; died 30 May 1865.

ii. James Riley Eddins, born Aug 1831; married Samantha W. Ellis, 20 Oct 1870, Butler County, Alabama; married M. F. Byrd, 16 Dec 1888, Monroe County, Alabama; died 2 Jan 1908, Wilcox County, Alabama.

iii. Christianna Eddins was born in 1831.

iv. John Rufus Eddins, born 15 Nov 1837; married Emeline Lucretia Beard, 12 Jan 1860, Wilcox County, Alabama; died 21 Dec 1921.

After the death of his first wife Nancy Manning in March 1840 William Riley married Nancy King on 29 Aug 1840 in Wilcox County, Alabama. Nancy King was born about 1818.She signed a sworn statement found in her husband’s pension file on 10 Mar 1879 and was counted in the Census for 1880. She died sometime after 1880 and her death date is currently unknown.

War of 1812, CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION, Item 12 & 13--
“She further states that she was married to the said Rilah Eddins, at the city (or town) of near Pine Apple, Ala, in the county of Wilcox, and the State of Alabama, on the twelfth day of August, A.D. 1840, by on (10) John Dekel, who was a (11) Justice of the Peace; and that her name before said marriage was Nancy King; and she further states that (12) her husband had been married to Nancy Manning who died in March 1840 near Pine Apple, Ala and that her said husband (13) Rilah Eddins, died at near Pine Apple, in the State of Alabama, on the Fifth day of April A. D. 1878.”

William Riley Eddins and Nancy King had fourteen children:

i. Francis Marion Eddins was born about 1841.

ii. Riley Harrison Eddins was born about 1842.

iii. Amanda M. Eddins was born about 1847.

iv. Isaac David "Ike/I.D." Eddins, born 29 Jan 1849, Wilcox County, Alabama; married Mary Temity Speirs, 19 Nov 1868, Pike County, Alabama,; married Bettie Anderson, 1909; married Sarah Jane Glenn, 1919; died 17 Apr 1933, Big Spring, Howard, Texas.

v. N. H. Eddins was born about 1851.

vi. Andrew Jackson Eddins was born on 1 Sep 1854. He died on 17 Apr 1907 at the age of 52.

Vii. William R. Eddins was born about 1857.

There may be other children not now listed and unproven. 

William Riley Eddins is my 4th Great Grand Uncle.

Bill for Partition of the Lands of James Brock.

 In 1871, sometime before 17 June of that year, James Brock, husband of Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis died. The exact death date is unknown. His oldest son, Valentine, was the administrator of his Father’s estate. His second oldest son, Eli P., and the other siblings petition the Courts, two years after their father's death, for a land division. That petition appeared within.

UPON reading the affidavit of complaint, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Clerk that Eli Brock, Nancy Miller and T. G. Miller, her husband, Angeline Miller and R. L. Miller, her husband, Isham Hinson and Thomas Hinson, defendants in the above entitled cause, are non-resident of the state of Mississippi, and reside beyond the limits thereof, respectively as follows: said Eli Brock, Nancy Miller, T. G. Miller, Angeline Miller and R. L. Miller, in Washington parish, State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Palestine, in said parish and State; and said Isham Hinson in the parish of Livingston, in the State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Amite City, in the parish of Tangipahoa, in the said State of Louisiana; and said Thomas Hinson in the county of Lafayette, in the State of Arkansas and who post office is at Bright Star, in the county of Hopkins, in the State of Texas; it is therefore ordered that said defendants enter their appearance herein on or before

 Eli W. Brock Estate with Death Date

State of South Carolina;

County of Chesterfield.

          Whereas Eli Brock, late of the County and State above written, died intestate during the month of February 1905 leaving as his heirs at law and distributees the following:

          Mary Jane Brock, his wife, and the following children, to wit: Katie McLaurin, Emma Brock, Hattie Bivens, Sarah Ann Brock, J. C. Brock, D. F. Brock, and Lucy Rivers (all of whom are of age), and they desire to divide the lands and estate of the said Eli Brock without suit amongst themselves.

          Therefore know all men by these presents that we, the said heirs at law of the said Eli Brock whose names are hereto signed, in consideration of the foregoing and of the promises of each of us to the other to sign deeds carrying out the agreement herein after mentioned, do hereby covenant, promise and agree to make titles to the various heirs at law as follows;

(1^st) To make and execute to Sarah Ann Brock, J. C. Brock and Lucy Rivers title to what is known as the house (pg 10) place, the same containing eighty acres more or less, to be divided amongst them as they may decide; or after they have so divided it agreeably amongst themselves to make and execute title to each of them to his or her share.

(2^nd) To make and execute to Katie McLaurin, Emma Brock, Hattie Bivens and D. F. Brock title to all other lands of the said Eli Brock, the same being known as the James P. Brock land and a small tract gotten by said Eli Brock from his father, to be divided amongst themselves as they may decide; or after they have so divided it agreeably amongst themselves to make and execute title to each of then to his or her share.

(3^rd) In consideration of the signing of the said deeds by the said Mary Jane Brock, widow of the said Eli Brock, each and every one of the others parties hereto agree to give unto the said Mary Jane Brock all of  his or her rights, title and interest to all the personal property of the said Eli Brock; and each of said parties further agrees to pay unto the said Mary Jane Brock the sum of ten Dollars per annum throughout the tern of her natural life, payable the 1st day of October of each year, and each of the said parties hereby agrees that the said sum so due annually shall constitute a lien or mortgage on the land so gotten and held by him or her as a security for the payment of said sum of Ten Dollars to the said Mary Jane Brock or order on the 1st day of October of each year.

For years I have known that Eli W. Brock died in 1905 but up until yesterday had no knowledge as to when he died in 1905. This past Sunday I learned of a collection of Deeds, on-line that I was unaware existed. This deed was in that collection. I only wish they had all included the date but his entire family is mentioned within the deed.

Julie Ann Boatwright Estate Agreement

 Julia Ann Boatwright was born Julia Ann Davis on 20 March 1849 to John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst. Julia and William Manley Boatwright were married about 1870. After the birth of seven children; six sons and a daughter, Julie Ann passed away in late 1911. Her tombstone has her death date recorded as 27 September 1911. This Probate agreement say that she passed away in October 1911. After her death, her husband, William Manley, lived an additional 26 years passing away on 23 June 1937.

The following agreement was this day entered into by and between Samuel Boatwright, Sarah E. Moore, John Boatwright, Leander boatwright, Thomas Boatwright, Jim Boatwright, and Hunley Boatwright of the first party and W. M. Boatwright of the second part:-

Whereas Julie Ann Boatwright departed this life intestate in October 1911, leaving the above named parties as her only heirs at law, and as we desire to settle her estate out of Court and with some agreement to that effect, and as W. M. Boatwright owns one undivided third of all her property and the other parties hereto the remaining 2/3 of same,

NOW THEREFORE

1^st. We Samuel Boatwright, Sarah E. Moore, Leander Boatwright, Thomas Boatwright, Jim Boatwright, and Hunley Boatwright, hereby agree that our father W. M. Boatwright, shall have for and during the term of his natural life, rent free, our two thirds interest in all the real estate and other property connected therewith in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, belonging to the Estate of Julia Ann Boatwright and the consideration for same is that our father, W. M. Boatwright, agrees that said parties above named shall have his one third interest in said land at his death.

2^nd. That the said W. M. Boatwright fully agrees to all the above and agrees that at his death his one third interest in the land of the said Julia Boatwright shall become the property of of <sic> the parties herein named-same being the children of himself and Julia Ann Boatwright his wife. Witness our hands and seals this 12^th day of October 1911.
