Redux: Who was the Second Wife of James Robert Ervin?

James Robert Ervin was born 7 Nov 1788, a son of Col. John Ervin and Jane Witherspoon of Marion District, South Carolina. On 3 February 1813 he married Elizabeth Powe, age 14, a daughter of Erasmus Powe and Esther Ellerbe. After the birth of seven children's, Elizabeth (Powe) Ervin died on 8 June 1832.

The question is – Who did James Robert Powe marry after the death of his wife Elizabeth Powe?

Harry Alexander Davis in his book “:The Davis family (Davies and David) in Wales and America : genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania” page 135 & 233.

He [William Davis] left one married daughter in Marion Dist. at the time of his removal, i. e. Ann Dozier O'Brien, who later married James Ervin. [pg 135]

O'Brien died sine prole date not known and Ann married (2) Major James Ervin of Darlington Dist., S. C. about 1832. [pg 233]

So, Mr. Harry Alexander Davis says that Ann Dozier Davis, daughter of William Davis (1869-bef Jan 1832) and Mary Davis married [Stothard] O’Brien and James Robert Davis.

Opposing that statement is the “Vereen Researchers” who state that Ann G. Vereen is the daughter of William Vereen b. 1775 and his wife Eliza P. Wilkes.

The following children are known William b.1800/O5?d.1858/60?m. Mar 1828 to Mary Costello Donnelly b. 1814?, Mary Eliza wife of John D. Magill of All Saints Parish and Ann G. wife of Ervin James of Marion County.

Colonel John Ervin’s Family Bible say that James Robert Ervin married Ann Vereen on 2 Jan 1834.

A Marion District land deed [O:467] shows that James Robert Ervin and Ann G. Vereen entered into a contract to marry.

I have found no proof that Ann G. Vereen is the daughter of William Vereen b. 1775 and his wife Eliza P. Wilkes. Conversely, I have found no proof that Ann Dozier Davis was married between her marriage to Stothard O’Brien and her said marriage to James Robert Davis.

The Col. John Ervin Family Bible says he married Ann G. Vereen. Note: I have not seen the original Bible pages only a transcript.

Do you know or have any information concerning the second wife of James Robert Ervin?

  1. Hmmm. I'm not sure I can answer your question about who exactly Ann Giles Davis' parents were. I thought her maiden name was Davis, but not 100 per cent sure.

But I might have something about her daughter. I know I have seen records about the daughter of Col. James Robert Ervin (1788-1836) and Ann Giles Davis (d 1835). Their daughter was named Ann Davis Ervin (1834-1905).

Ann Davis Ervin was related to me through her father (the Ervins) and she married my 2nd great-granduncle, Dr. Henry Kirk White Flinn.

I'll rummage through some records to see if I can find more about her mother.

    1. Yes and Ann Davis Ervin had one son James Dozier Flinn. I think Ann Giles Davis was a real person based on this Will Item> Item to my Niece Ann Giles Davis I give and bequeath the sum of 5 hundred paid out of my Estate at the time of my death. Ann (Catherine Davis) Dozier's Will
Actually, I have documents that shows James Robert Ervin married Ann Giles Davis, Ann Dozier Davis and Ann G. Vereen. He [William Davis, b. Dec 1769] left one married daughter in Marion Dist. at the time of his removal, i.e., Ann Dozier O'Brien, who later married James Ervin. According to the will of said William Davis dated 9 Oct. 1821, Marion Dist., S. C.
[Davis, pg 135]. I think this deed nails it down https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLK-Z9L1-V?i=246&cat=472601kind

  2. It is confusing. But the sources I looked at seem to show that James Robert Ervin's second wife was named Ann Vereen at the time of their marriage in 1834. So you think William Davis' daughter Ann was married once (or maybe twice) before she married James Robert Ervin?

    1. Lisa, I don't think Ann Giles Davis or Ann Dozier Davis married James Robert Ervin. Based on the Land Deed that's actually a marriage contract and James Robert's Father's Family Bible only James Robert could have married one woman and that was Ann G. Vereen. His first wife died in June of 1832, James himself died June 1836. The only way one of these Davis women married James is if Ann Giles Davis is also Ann G. Vereen. I haven't been able to proved who Ann G. Vereen parents are. Some say a Willaim Vereen is her father..
