52 Cousins~The William Hampton Brooks & Temperance C. Dry Family

Temperance C. Dry was born 20 Jan 1855, a daughter of Charles Andrew Dry and Leah (Tucker) Dry of Union County, North Carolina. Temperance was the last of six children borne to this couple. Temperance had one older sister, Lydia, and 4 older brothers. 


At age 17, Temperance married William Hampton Brooks on 8 December 1872. William Hampton Brooks was born 20 October 1849, a son of Calvin Brooks and Mary Melissa Smith of Union County, North Carolina.


William Hampton Brooks was a farmer. He and Temperance, his wife, lived in the New Salem area of Union County, North Carolina. 


William Hampton Brooks and Temperence C. Dry had the following children:

i. Lemuel Preston Brooks was born on 6 Sep 1873 in Union County, North Carolina. He died on 22 Apr 1952 at the age of 78 in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina.

ii. Daniel Philas Brooks was born on 28 Oct 1875 in Union County, North Carolina. He died on 26 Nov 1962 at the age of 87 in Marshville, Union, North Carolina.

iii. Charles Exium Brooks was born on 29 Oct 1875 in Union County, North Carolina. He died on 26 Nov 1962 at the age of 87 in Marshville, Union, North Carolina.

iv. Ida Valeana Brooks was born on 10 Nov 1880 in Union County, North Carolina.  She died on 21 Nov 1967 at the age of 87 in Monroe, Union, North Carolina.

v. Mary Prosser Brooks was born on 14 Oct 1883 in Union County, North Carolina. She died on 17 Sep 1966 at the age of 82 in Union County, North Carolina.

vi. William Clarence Brooks was born on 15 May 1886 in Union County, North Carolina. He died on 6 Feb 1960 at the age of 73 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

vii. Julius Lacy Brooks was born on 3 Feb 1889 in Marshville, Union, North Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1900.

Sadly, on 8 Jun 1896, Temperance C. (Dry) Brooks passed away leaving surviving her 7 children and her husband, William Hampton Brooks. Mr. Brooks, a farmer, with small children needed a caretaker. On 1 October 1896, William Hampton Brooks married Minnie Delaney Baucom and raised another family of five children.

William Hampton Brooks died 13 July 1915 in New Salem, Union County, North Carolina. William Hampton and Temperance are buried in Mount Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery, New Salem, Union County, North Carolina. 

Temperance C. (Dry) Brooks is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.
