52 Cousins~Mary Elizabeth Frances Brown

Mary Elizabeth Frances Brown was born 30 August 1850 in Webester County, Mississippi. She was the 10th of eleven children borne to Frederick Epps Brown and his wife Judith Clark. Mary Elizabeth Frances Brown had 4 sisters and 6 brothers. 

At age 21, She married Andrew J. Ray about 1871 in Webster Country, Mississippi. Andrew J. Ray was born 12 August 1850 in Webster County, Mississippi. He was a son of George W. Ray and Levina Frances Carroll. To this union was born one daughter:

  • Carrie B. Ray in October 1872. 

Her father, Andrew, died on 16 October 1876.

After the death of Andrew J. Ray we find Mary Elizabeth Frances (Brown) Ray and her daughter Carrie B. Ray in the 1880 Household of her parents, Fredreick Epps Brown and Judith Clark.  

            Surname mislabeled as “Key” corrected to read “Ray”


Mary Elizabeth Frances (Brown) them married David Edwin “Dock" Chrismond in 1886. the 1900 Census for Webster County, MS shows Dock and “Fannie” married 14 years with no children. 

On 27 November 1934, Carrie B. Ray, daughter of Andrew J. Ray and Mary Elizabeth Frances (Brown) Ray married William Henry Gruhlkey: Both Carrie and William were in their early sixties. 

Carrie B. (Ray) Gruhlkey died on 4 August 1938 in Europa, Webster County, Mississippi.

It is with much regret to learn of the death of Mrs. W. H. Gruhlkey who passed away Thursday at Europa, Miss. She was the step-mother of Calvin, Arthur, and Albert Gruhlkey.

Carrie’s mother, Mary Elizabeth Frances (Brown) (Ray) Chrismond died in 1939 approximately 7 months after the death of her only child, Carrie B. Ray Gruhlkey. I have a date for her death but was unable to confirm it with a source.

Note: I have seen Andrew J. Ray middle name to be James and Andrew. Unfortunately, neither were sourced and all source documents found had his name listed as Andrew J. Ray or A. J. Ray. 


Mary Elizabeth Frances Brown is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.
